4-man vs PUGs is OP.

4-man teams please L2P 8-man and stop picking on PUGs like you are Mech Romney incarnate.

PUGs today will be your 4-man / 8-man lance mates tomorrow (or when they realize that they could learn better with a group).

I try to spend most of my time 8-man downtime as a PUG.

I <3 PUGs.

I have nothing against people who choose to PUG, however, I do have something against those who choose to PUG and b**** about it. If you are tired of having low-skilled and uncoordinated teammates, then JOIN A UNIT. I have heard the excuse "Joining a unit is easier said than done" a hundred times, and to some of those pilots I have taken them into my unit and given them a shot at becoming Black Wolves. They saw what we can do in unison, and many I have given the chance strive to become part of what myself and my fellow Wolves have built.

If you really want to be a lone wolf, then at least join up with the dropships in the public teamspeaks. Or, take your own advice and "L2P." I do PUG quite often, despite running the Wolves, and although I cannot always rely on the pilots I get paired with, I can hold my own. While pre-mades are more coordinated, at the most only half the enemy team is on voip together. Instead, it would seem that being a PUG is used as a shield for the egos of poor players who blame everything but themselves for loosing.

i have been in a unit since closed beta / check my sig.

i'm no complaints against PUGs -- we were all newbies once upon a time... even if it was in closed beta.

my gripe is against 4-mans farming PUGs and the 8-man queue being a ghost town.

I think a significant factor in the lack of 8 mans in the public teamspeak is the presence of very skilled, organized teams in their own servers playing in the 8 man queue. Clans, units, etc. who play on a regular basis.

Honestly, the steamroll potential of a unit playing against a random 8 (even with voice coms) is greater than a 4-man in a PUG game. It can be fairly frustrating and intimidating unless you are a regular.

Hence the further development of match maker. I only hope that phase three is set-up to allow planned drops against willing opponents for practice, tournaments etc.

Sometimes you just don't have enough people for an 8, therefore you go 4

Any competitive game goes for perfection.
Elitism is adding being a ***** about it... Just saying.

Eh... apparently I can't say *****... Ok, lets rephrase then. Elitism is when you are agressibly disrespectfull towards people who might not be as good as you are, or you THINK they are worse then you are for whatever reason.

A very usefull thread for the OP: http://mwomercs.com/...then-look-here/

PuGs got their bad rep because, as was said before, most of the groups either will make an effort to make their members better or will not play with a bad (either a gameplay wise or a character wise) player at all. As a result most of such people can be found running as PuGs.
This doesn't mean, however, that there is anything with with being a PuG. I pug myself on a regular basis and enjoy it emmensley.

Happening more and more often is the dreaded Searching.... Searching.... Searching.... Searching.... Searching.... Failed to find a match and then our 8 man team groans in unison and we all ready up again. That almost NEVER happens in 4 man or PUG drops, so after the 2nd Failed to find a 8 man match someone will say "hey let's break up into 4 man teams and get some drops in" and whoop whoop we are back to timed 4 man team drops which by default more often than not puts us playing with the occassional other unknown 4 man team or 4 actual PUGS who from observation and the injection of ECM in the game are learning to stay in groups and focus fire; typically under the protective ECM bubble of a mech our 4 man team brought. Also noticing that they tend to take chat suggestions better or at least 90% of them are. The other 10% will reply with some smart*** comment then run off and die that glorious PUG death they favor so much. It's just not in some of them to WIN.

A pugling is a mindless sheep. Being unable to do anything solo, they often travel in packs, using superior numbers to win a fight. Alone, they may not be much of a threat, but in a group, they are dangerous. But that is the full extent of their intellect, as they ignore any and all objectives or strategy in a game. They just want to see fancy lasers or guns go pewpew and care little about anything else. Their ability to fire weapons usually means AC 20s at 500m, LRMs at 100m, or repeatedly shutting down to heat repeatedly.

When confronted with a 1vs1 situation, they usually run away because the thought of not having others to carry them is simply too much. As an ally, they are always a bane or burden to your team. As an enemy, they are fun target practice.

Tune in next week, when we'll take a look at the forum trolls, a much more vicious species.

I prefer premades myself, but I do pug on occasion. When I do pug however, 9-out-of-10 times, it's a curbstomp without taking anyone down. I can say this honestly from my own experience, the majority of pugs are charging idiots who don't have even a remote concept of teamwork, Which was established long ago to be a necessary skill to be successful in this game.

Only ever PUG. My W/L ratio is 0.33 over 700+ drops since open beta. Not sure if I've ever lost 13 in a row per one of the previous posters, but not likely.

I pug because I drop with absolutely no schedule and with no predictability. Can't get in to take a shower, play a match. Dinner's ready in 15 minutes, play a match, maybe two. Family wants to watch Wheel of Fortune, play for 30 minutes.

I'd rather lose 2/3 of my drops than miss any play time at all. There's always someone on the playground. "Pick Up Game", not "feeble minded hermit".

The secret to getting better through defeat though is to actually live long enough to implement ANY kind of skill. Which is hard when the PUGSTOMPATRON commander goes "hey, there's a stalker in E5. Everyone kill him in an overwhelmingly brutal and humiliating fashion on my mark. Mark."

True. But that's why I don't like using big, lumbering mechs. But yes I know what you're saying about PGSTs (Pugstompatrons)
or the trollers who assume PUGs are terrible players. I always laugh when someone says *PUGs effin' suck!" and the PUGs cook them. As for the stalker thing. Don't stand out in the open constantly. It is slow but can still use cover.

So then tell me ... how do I do this teamwork as PUG? I do not use VOIP. What other tools do I have to communicate and coordinate with my team? How can an experienced player help me to become a better Mechwarrior myself?

Except trying to follow the others and use spectator mode after each quick death?

I play 99% PUGs and I really like it.

I think PUGs are the best way to learn the game and master 'mech control and general battle awareness. Never ever take care of your W/L and K/D ratios and you can have a great time while acquiring skill you might never learn if you group up all the time.

I also played some 4 and 8 premades but I lack the time to join any dedicated group and I hate waiting for anybody to get ready for that next game. I'd rather play 5 games per hour in PUgs than 3 in premades.
