For me, I use a mouse + keyboard. I tried a joystick but, it felt too clunky and unresponsive to me. I didn't like aiming with it especially. I don't use wasd though (I never do actually.) Everything is centered off of the number pad and my mouse so, I don't have to lift fingers off of the general area when I'm fighting. Spectating on others, it seems that there are definatly some that use joystick. Either that or they aren't that great at aiming.

mouse + keyboard. I used joystick for the first few battles, then switch to mouse: much more easier to aim consistently at the same part of a mech with mouse.

CH setup. Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals. It is not perfect and it was not easily setup but I have always played MW with a joystick and I always will, at any cost. There are many challenges to using a joystick in MWO but the immersion factor is huge for me - I simply feel like I am piloting a 50 ton Mech when I am using the JS and gear. I used the mouse and keyboard for some time and I do appreciate the advantages it offers but it is not OP. I feel both options have benefits and shortcomings and each pilot needs to decide for themselves.

I used my joystick once, for about a minute. It's just too slow and not nearly precise enough.

I actually bought a joystick (Thrustmaster Stick X) specifically to use with MWO, only to find that the joystick supports sucks really badly.

Turin, there are ways ti increase response and sensitivty in the cfg file, take a look at the link that Ryvucz posted
I got an old 90s joystick to work fairly well, until I discovered that the drifting issue I was having was being caused by a broken spring, that stick has since died

playing with the cfg file setting will help a lot though
I wish there was a big empty room I could test pilot mechs in...

Just a heads up I play with my trusty Xbox controller and Xpadder software and its fantastic. You can also map a trigger to be a fine aim button and it makes the long range sniping much better. It is a different play style but it works very well and if any one you would like to try it let me know and I will help you. I can give you xpadder and a copy of my pad map for you to start with so all the work is done. BTW I believe in the joystick thing an d hate mouse and keyboard but I really feel like this game plays great with a gamepad. Also xpadder can be used to map a joystick as well and there are other 3rd part emulators that will run a joystick for you a well. You dont have to use the in game integration.

I couldn't have imagined myself using a mouse instead of a joystick for mechwarrior before I started. I've got a gaming mouse with a few extra buttons for different weapon groups which I find works well. I've been assigning right arm weapons to my right mouse button and left arm weapons to my left mouse button which I find pretty intuitive for firing from cover.

That said, I'm just waiting for an excuse and some disposable income to buy a good joystick.

use mouse + keyboard. joystick has no in game sensitivity sliders yet and I don't feel like tweaking my files to get that "just right" feel.

Plus aiming with it is a pain in the *** compared to previous games.

30 to 2 so far... Kinda why I dont see them working on full joystick support any time soon. The minority of minorities (forum goers are usually not the majority of players either) will have to wait

I didnt have much of a problem with aiming, other than my wonky joystick wanting to look down all the time
before it died I was having a great time with my joystick in game, had it all set up just right
then the spring gave out and it would just flop up or down and stay there, lol

the game needs sliders to adjust all the settings I was adjusting in the cfg file and it would be much improved and work great I think

Perhaps no one is using them because they are not implemented fully, and in such a way as to make them competetive (yes, it's possible).

Back when the X-Box was first released, Microsoft was planning to let Games for Windows and X-Box Live play together. They did some exhibition-style matches with a variety of folks, and the PC Gamer staff got in on the action.

PC Gamer has notoriously bad players on staff, such that every time they ever play anyone else they get destroyed. They were trying out Shadowrun (a FASA property), which was a cyberpunk/fantasy fps/rpg. They were going up against a crew of X-Box players who were pretty good at what they did. The PC Gamer guys expected to be wiped out, since they always had been in the past.

What wound up happening was an utter massacre, but not the way they had anticipated. The difference between mouse + keyboard and the game pad was like the difference between night and day. They had such a fundamental advantage over the other team that no matter how bad they were they were still better than the vastly more skilled other team, who were stuck fighting their controllers. This is why GfW and XBL cross-platform gaming was killed before it ever hit the market.

This is also a great reason for everyone who isn't some kind of Joystick Savant to roll with mouse and keyboard. The in-game advantage in precision and reaction time offered by that combination is nearly impossible to overcome.

Needless to say, I voted mouse and keyboard.

There are far more 'Sim' pilots out there than you would think that are very good with HoTaS/Pedals. Accuracy would require 'savant' level skills typically, but the offset to this is in piloting skill. If the correct number of axis was available, I garuntee you that the additional control schemes would be far superior than the kb/m's improved accuracy. Proper support would be needed...and sadly will probablly never come.

Right Now, HoTaM is probablly the top control set-up. Analog Turning would make HoTaM+Rudder Pedals the prefered choice. 6-axis control would make Sim Pits extremely powerful...even vs. the almighty mouse.

I am old school, been playing MW since 1-5. I think it came out in the late 80's. Just can't give up the JoyS and hope they fully support it. Thanks to Ryvucz for his post about settings, that is exactly what I have been looking for.
