I think what we all expected to happen has happened - the 8v8s are underpopulated because they are too hard for most.

I guess what I'm saying is the reason 8mans are underpopulated is not the ECM combo, but rather the attitude of most gamers. "How dare you beat me with superior tactics and loadouts, even though they're available to me, too. Fight like a man. Take off ECM so I can kill you."

You are pathetic. Coordinated 8 man teams prefer a balanced game. Its not balanced. Its a mess. 8 mans are not fun. And ive got news for you to... pugstomping is even less fun. There is no challenge, nothing to fight for. I havent played the game AT ALL since a few days after ECM was introduced. Im not going to play until the features are added that I expect to see, and current features are balanced properly. Until then, I and Im sure many other skilled players/teams that ARE craving a fair and balanced game in the 8man arena are not playing.

8v8s are where true competition is at. Where are the teams? We queued up last night, and had several time-outs, and then we played a couple teams twice, and a third team once. We should be having many teams playing these. 4v4s are not that much fun are they?

.
Yeah My friends, and 4 public pickup guys ran 8 mans for an hour and a half last night, and played the same 3 teams twice or three or four times each, and only 1 team once...
Nobody wants to 8 man now I guess... "sigh"... almost a Full friends list, and "NOBODY" wanted to 8 man when I talked to them, I had to actually convince people from PUG matches to friend up to get an 8 man going... Also a lot of my regular friends are out for the holidays, so that is another factor for 8 mans thining out I think.
.
On a side note, it has been difficult to get people to 8 man why..??? Oh, that's right, they are back to 4 man PUG stomping..
I usually run with 1 or 2 other people when i'm on now, and yeah I see a lot of the same 4 people grouped together, and I have witnessed 3 sync drops in the last 2 days, but it's no biggy, I will still be trying to convince others to 8 man, in my opinion it's more fun, even if I lose..

Really you should try just playing the mechs you want... Unless you are trying to use a bunch of streak cats, you can still be quite successful without much ECM.

I used to believe like you, until I got in the group I described earlier, where we had no Atlases and our only ECM mech was our single scout Commando. And we kicked butt! And yes, we even beat 5 AS7-D-DC + 3 RVN-3L teams

Assuming you are proficient in the mechs you like to play, and you have a good group commander, you can have plenty of success no matter what mechs you bring.

very much agree. the ECM boogieman has everyone spooked.

if 8 people are on voice comms, then any mechs with ECM should have an essentially useless effect aside from guided missile jamming.

Just to clarify for everybody: I'm not an anti-8man luddite or anything. When P3MM comes in, assuming it works as I predict, 8v8 will become fun, and those of us who aren't Solaris Grand Championship pilots will have the chance to enjoy full-team comms. I miss having more information and knowing that everyone on my team is on the same page.... really, I'm looking forward to it.

However... until then, the odds are much better than I and many others will find themselves better matched at random from the wider population. You see, 8-mans divided the population by skill level, and we decided we belong in the lower tier. That's our Elo matchmaking for the present time.

Well then you are failing your duty as a Beta tester. Your duty is to test the game and report your findings. Not sulk in the corner like a spoiled little child, because it isn't playing the way you want.

There really should be a C-bill boost for 8-Mans. You guys deserve it for being that organized.

That said, Elo will help this a lot.

I'm surprised there's no goons or ponies, never really see SOR or Black Widow, where are all these big units? They do have all their on voips set up. Would be cool to have a 3rd comstar which is a place where teams wanting to duke it out in 8 mans can go and coordinate with other players. The community is quite spread out which doesn't help much.

We have a couple of companies that are working on the more competitive side of things but really SoR as a whole is waiting on Community Warfare to really get involved like that. And quite honestly by then I really hope there is a tonnage limit or some other incentive to not bring 8 Atlas/4 Raven in future 12v12 matches as well.

I know nobody who enjoys 8v8.
8 man teams are too competitive, you usually get stomped by 7-8 ECM-mechs, either assault or lagshielded scouts and maybe a stream-cat.
The only way to compete is to force everyone to play those 2-3 mech-variants and use every single advantage in the balance of the game that you can find.
Guess what, nobody I regularly play with has that kind of attitude.
So, no 8vs8 for me.

Kong played 8 mans about 5-6 hours earlier today. We encountered one team 3 times in a row, then we fought another team (ARMD, if I'm not mistaken, that's how they call themselves) 3 times again. It's hilarious how dead the game is.
Also, respect to the ARMD guys, they had terribad ping and lost the matches one after another, but still kept coming back for more. Some teams just give up after they lose (Kong included) and go back to 4mans or disband altogether.

ELO will sort all of this out. 4 man is ez mode right now. Hell 2 man is ez mode if you're both bringing real mechs. Once pugstomping is not an option and the chances of victory in 8 man is not much much much lower than pugstomping, people will find the balls to play other modes.

That really made me giggle. As if even 1/10th of the stock variants would be used.

Our group has too many vets with PTSD who end up cursing death threats when the game becomes "sit behind this hill with ECM while the enemy sits behind the other side with ECM and nothing happens" or "zerg with six ECM ravens and lagshield kill a lance of assaults" - generally most of us just drop in 4 mans.

Not entirely -

If the game is sectioning off players by ELO then it's making it more difficult for anyone to find a match in the first place.

There aren't enough players right now to start sectioning them off.

The "bad" player is sitting in the 500 ELO room while the "great" players are tapping their feet in the 2500 ELO room.

And if the matchmaker says "screw it, nobody's here" and plops those two against each other? then we're right back where we are at this exact moment and it hasn't actually done a single thing.

What 8v8 needs is bigger maps. It's too easy to run 5 assaults when you can get to every part of the map rather quickly. The only mechs that have noticeable advantage in that are lights, cause of their speed and agility.
Bigger maps offer more room to maneuver and more places to organize ambushes.
And lets be honest here. Considering the mech size, MWO maps are smaller than CoD maps. ž
Also, added that everyone knows every inch of each map by now, there's no efficient way to outmaneuver the enemy team unless you head straight for cap along the edge of the map.

I don't get this pugstomping. Played probably 30+ matches last night and the only games that were complete decimation were ones that we dropped against a syncdropped team (2 games. Thats it). Even the ones against good 4-mans the pugs on our side were holding their own... except the pnes that suck. Put that's a matching player skill problem, not a premade/pug problem.

I'll agree with this, I have more fun win or lose with 4-man or PUGs than I could with 8v8.

Same. 4 man games are much more fun right now, win or lose.

i dont think MWO is *that* lacking in players that small sample size situations like this would be a problem. it really only could happen at the top or bottom with frequency.

i do think if they want to push 8v8 as a 'competitive' format, they should probably do something that encourages players to play it. and not just moar cbillz. maybe a separate rating or something, so that you can't just replicate pretty much everything in 4groups.

to really figure this out and come up with suggestions we'd need PGI's numbers. but in the end its their problem anyway so whatever
