...There needs to be an advantage to it. Or at least something ingame that makes it really cool and worth using. Im thinking hud overlays on the computer screens in your cockpit, locations on the mini-map of the person talking (color coded for reference), lots of cool immersive ingame stuff that make it worth the time and risk of ECM jamming and stuff. Discuss? Ideas?

I play Ghost Recon online, and they have an internal VoIP. No going to a shady 3rd party co. and using their software and such. It’s all in game. ..Anyone on the team can hear you. When you speak your handel come up in the right side. The cockpit already has too much going on to distract you. This is simple and neat. The players who don’t have a mic can hear you, and even those who are on a 4 man team can hear and give locations to where the opposition is located or area is clear. However I do not think the devs are interested in this or it would have been mentioned already...so its prob a dead idea...I wish it was not so.

Maybe a little speaker Icon over pilots heads to indicate who is talking?

A little speaker icon over who's talking (both on minimap and in the HUD) would be a nice touch.
Also needs a mute command, to specifically mute individual persons.

I'd be happy with an avatar that is slightly customizable, then when you talk your avatar pops up in the top left corner with the fuzzy sci-fi movie quality in ship comms effect.

Barring that, I suppose a changing color map marker would suffice...

Half-Life Source has had in game voice since the early 2000s. Hawken, Planetside 2, and other contemporary competition for MWO have it. If someone doesn't like it, mute a person or turn it off completely. But its presence would go a long way to improving gameplay for solo players, as well as enabling interaction between solo players and small groups.

There are perfectly good other voice programs out there that are easy to use. I dont want them spend anymore resources on a crappy ingame voip. What will ruin this game is if solo people are catered to. MWO is a team game and should be balanced around team players.

Wow..Your post makes no sense. .Typical elitist circlejerkin(premi) fanboi. By default if there is a in game VoIP, the (pugs) solo players will be more responsive to what in going on. Love it how useless people like you can ruin a discussion thread. No one is catering to anything..this is a way to get the solo players to interact with the team. Im not going to waste my resources an time setting up a 3rd party voip...and 90% of the new players will not either. You sir are not needed, so blow off.

If i seem harsh is because im sick of all the attacks on pugs. Yet i have no problem with guild systems. It gets my blood boiling when there is a post like this just to troll, and the mods do nothing. This is a discussion an idea thead...wow what a concept.

As for the other comments...yes on the mute!..Ghost Recon has that and the ability to add to friends list, ignore, add to guild, and other options..Really simple and fast options both in game and in lobby.
I agree Kobold, and it will simmer down the war between the pugs and guild players.

Q: Is anything going to be done about in-game voice options? The C3 thing seems deserted/abandoned, and I've never seen it used. We really need voice with PUGs. Tell me something good is going to happen here, please. ;_; [Levesque]
A: We're still on it, don't worry. I don't have specific dates to give you, but as soon as I do I will let you know ;) [Garth]

From ask the devs 29.

Thanks Brilig.

So why won't players use a third party Chat till something solid is added to MWO? I mean if you want VOiP to have better Teamwork, but refuse to use the software that is out there and established (NG:NG, ComStar) Aren't you cutting your nose to spite your face?

not really...it is a matter of convience, resources used in the pc and wanting a fast team up with people for a couple matches. But in my case i do not have a mic. Nor will i go out to buy one just for a game and or dload 3rd party software to play. Most general public gamers are casual, and do not see the need to do this since most modern fts games already have it built in. I do not want to install alot of software on my pc in general, its my rig and i just dont want it. So there are several reasons not just 1.
Anyways, its not in the game now, and i do not see the devs even to attempting to do this since all the issues they are having now...i have 0 hope.

Ok that is kinda a good reason. I mean I bought a whole computer to play this game. Three different mouses, up graded from iPod earbuds and build in Mic to $65 set of head phones. But I can understand the reasons to NOT do that. How will having VOiP Help you if you don't have a mic? ;)

As for being casual... Sometimes I wonder about that term. I log in. Turn on my TS3 and either PUG drop (no teammates) or team up. I don't have to wait to play. I do have to accept I will not have as much fun sitting in a droning Cockpit talking to nobody but a Monitor. That's casual. What I read a lot of is I want I want I want I want. I just want to drop into a game play my heart out and win or lose have fun.
