I think you can see from the images that there is alot less "ARGGH MY EYES" bloom / brightness on the 2nd set
it is definitely an improvement

Yes, but that wasn't really what I was asking about. ;)
I want to see the effects on a proper night map.

On some Maps it is that Haze you see in the distance. That file filters out the haze effect. I tried it and did not see a huge change but then again I did not see the haze as an issue to start with. ;)

im trying it now. all these 5hitty filters messing up this game, not tot mention the crappy color.

Why are the last 4 lines commented out?

;r_NightVisionSonarLifetime = 2
;r_NightVisionSonarMultiplier = 0.2
;r_NightVisionSonarRadius = 32
;r_NightVisionViewDist = 1000

Good question, almost missed them and I bet unless you don't know java you wouldn't even notice that the ; has such an effect.

pure curiosity: why the semicolons ?

semi colon is used in java language to comment out lines of code. Afaik having the semicolon is the same as if you would just delete the lines all together.

nice, thanks OP.

eta: so help me out here, my default user.cfg is empty, should I just add these lines and save it or do I need to create a whole custom one?

I do not think they should have a problem with us adjusting this, we are making it a little cleaner and easier to see. We are not changing the distance we can see. I think we should be okay, but you never know.

Thanks by the way.

no answer on the lines with semicolon?
should we just ignore these entirely or take out the semicolons to make them active?

sorry they are all adjustments. The lines that are semicoloned just means im not using them, I included them because all machines are different and you may or may not find them useful. But feel free to try them out adjust them etc... the main lines i use are

r_NightVisionBrightLevel = 0
r_NightVisionCamMovNoiseAmount = 0
r_NightVisionCamMovNoiseBlendSpeed = 0
r_NightVisionAmbientMul = 6
r_NightVisionFinalMul = 3

To me gives the best result on my machine..

This is borderline hacking. You are aware of that, right? ;)

Quote

Well, it is.

Yet you are changing values that shouldn't be possible to change.

WRONG!

...below are the words of Bryan Eckman on the subject:

Quote

We do not encourage users to modify the user.cfg file, however there are known tweaks that can be made to improve performance. This is not a violation of the TOS.

"known tweaks that can be made to improve performance. This is not a violation of the TOS"

from this post... but the topic has been covered enough times that your white knighting makes you seem rather uninformed about a subject your so quick to cry foul on.

Lol'd hard. Of course using official user config feature created specially for users that want to improve game perfomance for their system IS HACKING! How come i missed such an obvious thing?!

Here is the question you need to ask yourself...

Can those values be input/changed by running the game and going into "options"?

No?

Then what is the difference between adding/changing values within the game's files and using a program that takes info found client side and displays it on screen (eg. wall hack), after all that info is found client side right? Doesn't that mean it is there for the client (us players) to do as we will?

A lot of this was done in DoD as well. Smoke effects and even smoke grenades became useless because people could open the command console and change values that were not available to change in the game's options menu. When the game is reduced to perfectly clean, clear maps but only for the person who changed the values, it is cheating.

What's next? Changing the mech's texture to hot pink on your screen so they are easier to spot?

just total BS.

These settings are total useless. No change watsoever in any crispness or better visibility on any of the 2 view mode.

Thanks for nothing..

Night vision looks much better on those screens. Maybe even good enough to start using it!

As for thermal vision I'd like to see more pictures, but maybe I'll just use it and see for myself. ;)

the user.cfg is open to the... um... user to... um.. config?
the devs have at certain points actively helped people to setup settings in the user.cfg to get round problems with things like joystick configuration

the only options available to you in the user.cfg are the ones they allow you to edit... if they want this locked down then they very easily can do

This, anything they don't want us messing with is disabled/locked.
