EDIT: FYI, when I say "MechWarrior video game" I mean the First person real-time Battlemech Combat games.

PS: This poll is only about MW, and the BT boardgame from which it comes, not about mech-commander, or any of the BT based but non-MechWarrior (as defined above) video games... or about mech/mecha games in general.

And no, it's not about the pen-and-paper RPG of the same name "MechWarrior", either.

-------------------------------------------

I don't think this poll will necessarily end any of the arguments around here, but I think it will prove to be interesting to see how people answer these questions.

I'm not really interested in the TT/MW video game argument in this thread - that's going on in other places on these forums.

I'm really more interested in what kind of knowledge each side of the discussion posses and how much of it they have.

You should add earthsiege 1, 2, and starsiege to round out more mech games!

I played the **** outta those as a kid before jumping to mechwarrior.

That might be interesting in another poll; I'm trying to see just how much knowledge people have of the MW video game genre and the BT board game.

I doubt I'll win any popularity contests around here with this, but I'd still like to see a few "None of the above" options in there.
My very first experience with BattleTech is actually with MechWarrior Online.

And I have to say I enjoy it a lot.
The universe I mean. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy the game as well, but when I look around at sarna and listen to you guys rant on about the rules and details of the table top I quickly realize that MW:O is a fairly shallow representation of the material available. I can easily see that this, at least for me, in a more "proper" MMO style would have the potential to be completely and utterly awesome.

All that said, and to save a bit of face, I'm a game designer by profession and a complete RPG nerd through 22 years of table top gaming (my virgin game system was the Mythus series by Gary Gygax), so I'm probably above average susceptible to the complexity of BattleTech.
I wish someone had introduced me to it 20 years ago. What a ride it must have been to follow BT throughout the years. B)

So, yeah, "None of the above", but no less a no-lifer I guess. :)

Wow.

Two people claim to have played ALL of the MW video games AND the boardgame extensively (and are still playing the BG currently).

And I thought I had no life... !

You don't lose face by not knowing these things. We were all newbies in this at some time.

Yes, because it's not a MechWarrior video game.

MW= First person, real time Combat in a BT battlemech.

No, when referencing video games, MW does N.O.T equate with the pen and paper RPG of the same name.

Played Mechwarrior 2, Mercs, Ghost Bears' Legacy, Mechwarrior 3, Pirate's Moon, Mechwarrior 4 free release, and Mechwarrior Living Legends.

I've played a little bit of the TT due to Megamek, although my knowledge is much greater than just that, because I've got the PDFs of the rules and reference them often and have read through them.

Interesting. So far, nobody has clicked in the option for having played the BG a lot and having only played ONE of the video games.

I wish I had more than 3 questions - I would have added one for how extensive people thought their knowledge of the TT rules are, and one for how extensive they thought their knowledge of the novels/fluff lore was.

Ah, well, take what you can get.

Maybe you should add options about the novels, because that's where I for example have 95% of my knowledge from.

My first non-flight simulator game was Mechwarrior 2...that should tell you something

Mechwarrior 3, the single player specifically, is probably one of my favorite games of all time.

When I transitioned to MW4, I realized that game was a ****.

I moved on to LL every few days for about a year and used my previous experience in traditional FPS and Mechwarrior to terrorize servers.

Now I've got MWO. Every mech is slow, undergunned, and too hot. I deal with it by constantly tweaking my builds, and the only mech I feel remotely comfortable in is a Cent or an Atlas.

Also I recall Clan mechs in previous games being completely superior to IS mechs.

I also see a lot of "CLANS WILL BE UNBALANCED, I DON'T WANT THEM, WAAAAAAH"

To these people, I ask one question.

Have you ever played this game with an XL engine?

Protip: OmniMechs have XL engines. XL engines are big and fragile. IS mechs are zombies.

Enjoy killing glass cannons.

MPBT Solaris, hard to believe I used to pay AOL by the HOUR to play games ($1-3 per hour, don't recall exactly). I rarely played Solaris though, played Silent Death mostly. Good times.
