Still an inferior choice to a Raven, who can scout at the same top speed and has more HP (plus an additional weapon rack spot).
Just ran all the variants of the Spider. Top speed cap really wrecks the mech. Great newbie tool, as you literally HAVE to work to overheat it. ECW means it has a contribution and plays close to a COD experience (seques new players into the whole walking tank world of play & thinking man shooter)
problems:
- too light, not compelling to bring vs. an Atlas or Raven or 'frat. Its metarole is only relevant in a BookValue constrained environment, that is an artifical gimmick when placed in a metagame context. Limited HP's mean its not worth the cost when doing a cav. charge or coordinated firing line.
- DPS provided is trivial vs. comparable mechs to bring in its weight class
- Speed cap makes it an inferior mech to Raven and Jenner K (trivial to bring now for competitive ladder play).
- Limited locations to jump given box canyon maps prevent it from excelling as a space-wizard (hiding and sniping in odd geometry). Jump's currently do not give it a material advantage vs. Jenner or 'frat who can also geometery snipe.

Was then able to repeat the stunt over an ally atlas.
Combined with hopping from to roof top to roof top, the spider has become my favorite mech to pilot on River City.

On the flip side ... in my Spider vs an ECM Raven I usually can manage to keep him busy and then extend out of the engagement using carefully planned jumps over terrain that is impossible for the Raven to follow. But I wouldn't trust a Spider to be able to take one of those out reliably without suffering too much damage.
However ... another variant I used with max jump jets and Adv extended sensor module + a ERLL might make for an interesting long range scout/light sniper once some larger maps are released.

Neo: "Are you saying that I can dodge bullets?"
Morpheus: "No Neo. What I'm saying is if you're the One, you won't have to."
(Speaking of which your Spider can easily recreate Neo's impossible leap of faith from one skyscraper to another as a tutorial.)
Can you mount AMS to protect you from LRM's? Yes. Can you mount ECM to prevent LRM locks? Yes. Do you need to resort to such elementary and wasteful tactics to dodge missiles? No. That being said, it never hurts to mount ECM.

Yeah it defiantly feels like it takes leg damage a bit too easily on small jumps but maybe thats just me since I usually pilot Atlases.

What loadout is that on the 5D? Did you have to swap out engines or anything? I have 2ml ecm, endo steel and ferro armor.
I usually pilot Atals D-DC but I was intriuged by this build so I thought I'd give it a try adn got the 5D. Its not gonna kill anything but its still a lot of fun and if you can scout/tag for your team then tahts really your role anyways. I feel like whenever two spiders meet on the battlefield theirs this sort of weird thing we do were we lock eyes and need to decide "do I chase this guy around and have a jedi duel with him for 10 minutes or do I go troll his team?", usually its the latter one thats decided upon.
The most fun I've had so far with the 5D is running around G6-G8 grids in river city for 2 whole minutes after my team died just doing laps around a cicada with the rest of his team (most heavy mechs) in tow behind him. I vertically rocketed over a skyscraper before coming down on my already damaged legs and dying from the fall....
It was pretty funny but it was also hilarious how frustrated the other team was. One of them piped up "If your not going to fight then just die..." to which I replied with a short ML burst to his face before running behind another building. I'm not sure what the spider's true role is as s light but its does a great job enacting Tribes ascend from the viewpoint of a light mech.

The upper limit of speed cap really makes the higher end XL's pretty trivial.

I've done 3 matches so far and been the last one standing on my team each time. First game had 1 or 2 kills (IIRC) and 6 assists. Second game had 0 kill and 4 assists (but probably had about 8 destroyed components). 3rd game had 0 kills (MG Spider) and 4 assists.
Not a lot of kills but the most fun I've had in MWO in a while (Still love my Stalker though

Great fun!

I have seen quite a few die, same goes for Ravens and Jenners.
Not saying the lag doesn't need to be fixed, but the whole "it's impossible to hit lights" comments are a little much.
