So, I was derping around last night and discovered that when you double click a name in the group window, a chat box appears! We could both see each other's messages so it's at least an option for post-game chatting with your team if you're not using VoIP. You can also double click a name in your friends list and chat with them. Notifications of messages are lacking, though. I couldn't tell who messaged me when it came straight from the friends list but others have said the name of the sender flashes for them.

Anyway, thought I'd share my discovery!

That generally not what people are talking about when they say game needs chat functions.

They're usually talking about Lobby Chat, possibly with player created channels.

I think he knew that judging from the sort of in the thread title. It's at least something for now until the changes are (hopefully) implemented.

That's been there for a while. It's not very useful.

The folks you chat to get no warning... they don't know you've chatted unless they double click your name and discover it. Not working as intended.

Lets be honest though, a Lobby Chat and the current Friend Only, Wonky, No Alert chat are hardly on the same level. Akin to saying that just having 4 wheels and an engine makes something a modern motor vehicle.

At least the social button blinks... but, yeah, it's Russian Roulette of trying to find the sender after that.

I wasn't stating whether the current system was useful or not(all not). Was just stating the op knew this wasn't a good version. He looks like he was trying to give a friendly notice to all. Hopefully this gets better sooner than later.

Agreed. I still think that many of the community based issues could be quickly solved with the inclusion of some sort of Lobby and attached Chat. Communities are almost always better in-game than out.

It's been there for a while. Most people don't even know about it unfortunately. I try to message Humble Sea Bass every time he is on and tell him I appreciate how Humble He Is but I don't think he ever gets my messages. Or he is just too Humble To Say Thanks.

Calling this a chat function is a real bad for every chat funktion in history.

Yes, you can send a friend a message, but dont aks me how often you get a "ohh, sorry, didnt notice" as answer.

But dont worry...the UI and the whole Mechlab is in the making. Nobody can tell us when we can change Mechnames, their position in the roster and more...but it will come one day...

...just like collisions :)

You should probablly mention it's completely borked atm too. You can't even type a sentence twice in a row without the client 'eating' most of your txt. The friends list chat used to flash individual's names too, but that's been borked also for quite some time. For a game that touts 'teamwork', one would think even the craptastic tools available in-game would have a higher priority on the fix-it list. In-client txt chat actually worked rather well in CB, but support is non-existent for it now.

Just like the OP I stumbled on that per accident. Even though it's cool that it actually does exist, this communication tool is at the most very very basic and does not offer much use.

Yeah as stated it has been there a while. The person that sent you the message used to blink so you could actually tell who was chatting with you. Now my social button doesnt even blink. I had a buddy call me on my cell asking why I wasnt accepting the group invite, lol.

The other problem is that there is a friend limit (currently). To chat, or group, they must be a friend. Many times after a match, I have had someone send me friend invite wanting to group up. Only weeks later, I dont see them any more, or cant remember who they are. As my friends list fills, I have to delete some.

It is a start, but does need work. I am guessing they (the Devs) have lots more on their plates (cough..net code..cough...maps..other things [fill in the blank here])

As has been said before, this "chat" has been in the game for a while, but is not very useful.

You can't send messages to friends who are offline or in game already, the notification is very iffy whether it works or not. About the only thing I can count on is that the SOCIAL window will flash, but then I need to check on all my online friends to see who sent the message, then my groups and invites tabs because that could have set the SOCIAL tab blinking too.

Plus, there is no way to use the chat function to find friends, or form groups unless you have a bunch of people on your friends list that you know will want to group up.

It's better than nothing, but just barely.
