The Dakka

When I first started playing, the only thing I wanted to pilot was a catapult for boating LRMs. I blame the table top for this. She was a fine beast, that C4, but this was around the time gauss was still awesome and K2s were the grand epitome of what then was 'cheese'. Naturally, I picked it up as my 2nd cat. I tried it with the PPCs in the arms first and didn't think it was terrible, but the gauss complaining continued and I had to find out for myself.
It was glorious.
I never even thought about putting any other kind of ballistic weapon in it. I'd seen a few AC20 cats roaming around, but the kills kept coming in with the gauss and I didn't want to fix something that wasn't broken (or rather was). Eventually I got a 3rd cat and, not wanting to give up the long range game entirely, turned it into a triple large laser with giant missle racks filled with tiny LRM-5s or streak-2s.
Next was the Raven 3L. I again bought it because of how insane ECM was, and still is. Endless games of high kills few deaths, and I had to get a 2nd and 3rd to finish the mech trees. I tried mounting the Ultra AC-5 on a raven, and got terrible results. I realize it's probably a dumb idea to begin with, but it turned me off to non-gauss ballistics for a long time.
The stalker was next, and with no ballistic hardpoints they were easy to ignore. However, throughout all of these games, my brother roamed around in a centurion first and a phract later, always bringing with him the dakka. the Ilya was king in his eyes, and the kills it brought upon hapless foes made me reconsider my stance on autocannons. So I got a 4x, strapped on 4 AC-5s, and it blew my mind.
It wasn't the best mech in my arsenal by any means. It didn't get me the most kills, it didn't survive the longest or run the fastest or any measurable 'best' except for the dakka. The thunk of the shell leaving the cannon, the clink of the next one prepping, the explosion and burst of sparks as round after round tore components to shreds. How had I gone for so long without experiencing this? It's nonsense. It's fantastic. Amazingly, it's not overpowered and yet incredibly enjoyable.
The autocannon. The dakka. It pleases me.

That's the old laser / gauss / LRM mentality deep in the back of your mind getting the better of you.
The real answer to "How much dakka is enough dakka" is simple: there isn't enough.

True, the Dakka per second could be better, but the Alpha Dakka is higher on the Dakka-5, and the Ultra Dakka just won't make enough room for the backup pair of medium sissy lasers I have. Also, two types of ammo for the dakka makes me weary.
It is my current blend of range, alpha, dps, and space that I enjoy, and not one single facet of each.

Insane? INSANE? It's BRILLIANT! It's only fault is that it does not weigh 400 tons and have 8 times it's current loadout. We're still working on fixing this.
