On most maps I find myself pushing H at the start and playing in thermal vision; it's simply easier to spot enemy mechs, particularly at a distance.

The problem is it's sooo boring to look at.

When I'm spectating I see a lot of other people using thermal as well.

It's a waste of cry-engine 3. I know it's my own decision to use it, but I feel switching to normal vision puts you at a disadvantage on some maps, and night vision is a joke.

I don't know if it should be removed, or perhaps made a VERY expensive module? (and ditch advanced zoom :P )

I agree... however I fear the servers would melt under the shear weight of QQ if they ever did this :P

You're right, the fact that the enemies light up nice and bright in thermal makes me want to run it at all times. A module that outlined mechs in daylight would solve this.

Thermal should be a module.

People. Really. It's a game. You play it for fun. If you don't have fun using Thermal, then just don't. Is it so hard? Why do people always have to use the most cheesy ways to play, even if they don't have fun doing so?

I believe they're going to implement Magnetic Vision or Seizmic Sensors as module(s)

If Thermal were made a modul, it would be a really moneygrubbing action.

Maybe we coudl make legs modules that we have to pay extra for if we want to move also? I mean, mechs NEED legs to move, so they're mroe important than Thermal...

The game needs some basic things you can rely on to play...

Also, that would be an always picked choice...

I find while thermal makes it easier to spot a mech, it makes it harder to aim for precise points on the torso/head. I usually swap to night vision mode on the night maps once I have my target.

I don't like any of the vision modes, except as a quick switch in to get my bearings in a chaotic fight. Even then only in certain conditions/maps.

i use the heat vision at the beginning of the match to scope the direction enemy might be moving... but i don't use it much any other time... personally i think the heat vision should have a range limit...

on the night map... i usually use the night vision, while it is not the best and could use some tweaking I prefer to fight in night vision mode vs the heat vision.

just my preference and i'm pretty sure i'm in the minority

Thermal has multiple uses. I use mine primarily to acquire targets and also to check their heat ratio. If they're hot, I know I'm at an advantage.

Thermal is op.

The simple way to stop people from using thermal 24/7 would be to get rid of the overzealous distance fog. There, I said it!

As it is, under real circumstances, fog can actually obscure thermal vision too.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being one at some point. The game is still technically under development, so the devs can remove any existing features they want and turn them into unlocks.

I was surprised it was default when I started.

I feel very much the same way. Besides for the Advanced Zoom part. I like it. I just wish it had a clearer picture or just let you zoom farther the normal way.

If you know the maps well enough, and know other mechs well enough then there is no reason to not use heat all the time. Which is what I do. If heats was a module, it would be my first choice for sure, unless they bring in something better.
Night vision is a joke, but that doesn't matter, as I rarely notice the difference on the night map as I am on heats. Although if I die, and end up riding on someone that isn't using night or heat on the night map then it makes me twitch out real bad..

would be nice if the put in a 500-800m ish max range for thermal, but it would never happen

Or better yet, if you're using thermal, you can't zoom. Problem solved, /thread.

It seems nonsensical that infrared emissions would be visible at longer ranges and through more "haze" than visible light - when in fact the opposite should be the case (except maybe against cold backgrounds like frozen city). I'm hoping for a more complete set of scanning option, with various effective ranges and resistance to jamming, and a wider range of visibility conditions and environmental conditions to use them in.

However, I suspect a lot of other stuff will need to come in first.

Pretty sure I remember reading something about MAD coming down the pipeline.

I use thermal probably 80% of the time. Makes it much easier to distinguish my targets and as stated I can tell how hot someone is. Contrary to what someone else posted I find it easier to pinpoint damaged areas especially with energy weapons. Easy as pie to carve out more armor on that hotspot I hit with the last salvo.

If you make it a module, you have to kill snow effects, which would be unfortunate.

Better to maybe limit it's range a bit maybe?
