This is from the point of view of a heavy brawler.

Heavies first (except dragons). They carry nearly as much firepower as any of the assaults, tend to be much more optimized (certain STK builds excepted). They have less armor though, meaning they will go down quicker.

Depending on the builds of the assaults, it is either assaults or mediums next. Brawling assaults are primary targets. Long range assaults I will ignore in favor of killing brawling mediums. Leave the lights for last. The amount of effort to kill them off is not worth the small amount of damage they deal (compared to the heavier targets). Often I can at least rely on the lights on my team to harass them and keep them busy.

go for anything you can pick off quickly, if an enemy is in the open and in a position where his team mates can't assist then take him out as quickly as possible

if things get in to a brawl, then focus on whatever has the highest damage output for the lowest armour - this often means heavies (particularly heavy cheese builds like 6SRM6's, dual AC/20 etc.) as they will go down quicker than assaults and rob the team of a good chunk of damage output

the most important thing is to focus as many of your team on a single target as you can - if you can't get a clear shot on the same target then take pot shots at other targets while you reposition - you'll be putting them off from focusing on your team at the same time

when I play a medium, I always take the biggest engine that mech can fit and I'll quite often take up a flanking position and get in behind a heavy or assault that isn't the primary target - a bunch of SRMs in the back will either distract them off your guys long enough for you to swing round and add in damage on the primary, or if they ignore you, you get an easy kill

Raven 3Ls and Commando 2Ds.
If you have other lights, you won't for long if you don't kill these.

While I generally go for the larger mechs, sometimes I will kill light mechs just to get my nonskilled teammates to focus fire what they can hit.

This is why I like piloting mediums, everyone ignores you until the end and so you can do a remarkable amount of damage!

If I am playing PUG I'll focus fire on whatever my teamamtes are shooting at, this is normally whichever mech ends up overextending.

Otherwise I'll pcik targets based on my weapon loadout. If I'm in my 3L or Streak-Back then I'll try and chase down lights and mediums. If I'm rocking a 4SP with SRM6s, I'll go for heavies and assaults.

If I'm in a team, we'll often go for Catapults first then kill/cripple mediums to reduce incoming damage quickly.

I needed to delete my vote because I lied: My true priorities are whatever mech that has parts with armor gone or the mech the guy beside me is shooting at.
