Matchmaker

Background: According to the fluff, Clan never drops with more than half the Inner Sphere resources. So just make it that way in the game.

Game Mechanic: Matchmaker will match 8 IS mechs against 4 Clan mechs for any game involving Clan tech.

Targeting

Background: Clan mechs tend to fight 1-1.

Game Mechanic: Any mech targeted via 'R' by a Clan mech cannot be targeted by any other Clan mech until the target has been broken

Or just let any mech use Clan weapons and tech, problem solved.

Ummm. . . you've missed the point entirely.

Please re-read the thread title "2 simple ways to keep Clans from taking over the game"

Your idea guarantees nobody will *ever* play Inner Sphere tech again. Pretty much what's going to happen if you don't put in at least the matchmaker fix too.

You should spend 5 minutes thinking about how MWO's heavily modified heat management and doubled armor is going to blunt the supposed clan mech superiority before you start going into a "Clans are going to ruin the game" panic attack.

That is a horrible idea for MM. Using the existing TT BV 2.0 system would solve the issue.

It won't blunt the Clan mech superiority at all.

I'm not saying the balance will be the same as TT, but that's irrelevant.

But when you have DHS that take up 2 slots, Gauss Rifles that weigh 3 tons less, PPCs that do 50% more damage on the same heat, and mechs boating UAC20s. . . Inner Sphere play is doomed unless you take steps to reign in the Clan tech. But that shouldn't be done by making the Clan tech the same as the Inner Sphere tech. . . it should be done by limiting it to the way it was intended to be used.

I'm a personal fan of the 2vs1 (or 3 vs 2, dunno) strategy. Clan teams fight at a numerical disadvantage. The one-on-one targetting thing would be crippling, I think, and very confusing.

Here's the problem with this. First, the cannon never stated that. In fact during the Great Refusal on Strana Mechty and Inner Sphere company (12) fought against Clan Binaries (10). So this half resources thing really has no basis.

Second, in the cannon clan warriors are all superbly trained and are excellent pilots. In MWO, the average pug is worse than terrible. Just putting a pilot in a clan Mech with clan technology will not make him worth two Inner Sphere pilots.

I'm getting a little tired of all these threads saying "OH noes! The clans are coming to molest our tender IS privates! We gotta come up with a million half-baked ideas to nerf them now waaaaah waaaah waaaah"

5v8 drops and mixtech. Problem solved. If nobody ever plays IS tech again, well, that's what happens in canon eventually anyway.
Just please stop the whining about how the clans are going to ruin this game because YOU DON'T KNOW THAT, and you don't know how clans will be implemented. Hell, it could be over a year before we see the clans.

my 2 cents on the topic....

This only works one way.....

Clans are the Steamroller from Hell they are supposed to be. Their weapons are 250-300 years more advanced than the IS right off the bat (although they actually have gotten lazy in development over the last 50 years), and absolutely MUST reflect that. They are faster, run cooler, hit harder and better armored than their IS counters.

2)They work the Metagame to "encourage" the Clans to invade and fight "properly". Meaning that Clanners are encouraged through the rewards to adhere to Zellbrigen, and accrue bonuses for so doing, and serious penalties when they do not. The Matchmaker will have to be set specifically to include a Clan/Inner Sphere set up, and Clanners will have to be dropped into numerically smaller teams, which only works if....

3) There is a hard line drawn between Clan and Inner Sphere, and one simply cannot equip Clan Tech on to Inner Sphere Mechs (which they actually could not do initially, with the exception of Wolfs Dragoons, whom no one gets to play anyhow) and Clan Mechs CANNOT drop in a Inner Sphere Team. (At least initially).

and yeah, there will be lots of angst. A few other not "mandatory" ideas, but that I think would work and help maybe integrate stuff......

Eventually Clan Weapons do start making it over to the IS, and that is easily addressed in the future with the Module system, by making a nice, really expensive Module called "Clan Tech Enabler". Mechs with that can NOW equip Clan Tech. And at some point, possibly make a "Victor Steiner Davion" and "Hohiro Kurita" Daishi twins Hero Mechs. The upside being access to Clan Weapons and such, the down side, would be, that since they don't have access to Clan Technicians and Weapons Logisitcs, the Hard Points would probably be fixed, or VERY limited, whereas a traditional Omni supported by Clan Logistics, would be totally open on Hard Points.

Even with Clanners though, the rank and file don't get to gussy their Omnis anyway they want. That is why almost all Pilots drove the "canon" stock variants of each chassis. You could drive a Prime, or an A, B, C variant, but most pilots didn't get to mix and match. That is again, easily addressed in the Pilot Tree, as one "ranks" up their Mech, it would allow for "open customization

I have an inkling that we will find that there has been a lot of Double Blind work going on from PGI, and that the Pilot Trees and Module Slots and such will play a very large part in balancing the Metagame come launch.

2 SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP CLANS FROM TAKING OVER THE GAME

Keep clan from ruining the game ? As far as im concerned this is a TEAM based game.... the one who are ruining the game ( if any ) are the random players that dont want to play as a team. Not the players that plays in team.

Why dont you just get in a group. Its not that hard. and not all of them require you to Role-Play.

Mismatching the amount of people on teams could work but how many people are going to run in the weaker mechs? I had thought about a weight advantage but in this game bigger isn't always better so letting the IS have a weight advantage per mech wouldn't quite work either.

Making it so only one clanner can target would make it harder for the clans but it would also affect missles more than energy and ballistic. Yeah they're not big on indirect fire but they do still have to lock on for lrms and streaks don't they?

IS vs. Clan should be set up 2 lances vs. 1 star, so 8v5.

Their tech should also be so grossly expensive that only people who are affiliated with Clans can afford to pay for them (pretty much only stock Clan load outs unless someone has won a bunch of matches and can afford to buy another weapon).
