I dislike them because they are the endgame. They will be the common denominator in all end game or top tier games even mid tier. They did the same with TT, unless you sported sometimes 3:1 odds your IS mechs were going to be fragged. It will happen with MWO. I think people resent them because of those reasons. You think my Atlas will be invited to a team if he has a standard AC20, med lasers and SRM6 over a Cl UA20 and ER MED lasers and Clan Streak 6s and clan DHS? Dont be foolish and kid yourself into thinking the former mech would stand a snowballs chance against the latter. The tech is OP, that is the draw to it pure and simple.

Oh you mean like the DC, where the honorable samurai vanquish their detestable, dishonorable foes on the field of battle? Oh and only the male members of certain honorable families can ever dream of becoming a buso-senshi. Oh & only anyone with a Kurita connection whether born into it or married into it, can achieve the highest heights? Please. ;)

It's not so much that I dislike the Clans, more than I love a good underdog story. And the Inner Sphere eventually reigning triumphant despite being significantly out-teched is just awesome for me.

No one said that, Mr. Redirection. This is Battletech. All factions are bad. The Clans being fascist warmongers does not preclude the Dracs from being militarist, chauvinist ****** or Davion selling their soul to *****. They're all bad. The question here is why don't people like the Clans.

Edit: Really? S-a-t-a-n is censored?

The FRR is not really that bad.

If it is 3 to one against Clan, yeah, you might. Superior numbers will always even the odds. It is just a matter of finding the right balance.
The only appeal of the Clans to me is the Backstory. Thats it. If I ever played Clan it would be for pseudo role-play and thats it. Most of their mechs are kind of boring and largely interchangeable.

Ask a Merc how they feel. Additionally, the FRR becomes part of a Clan, so traitors? Meh, off topic.

You just don't get it, do you?

You can rant about the IS factions' shortcomings until you're blue in the face. This is not the point. All factions in the BattleTech universe are, from the viewpoint of a modern liberal democracy, quite horrible. The BattleTech Universe is (or at least originally was) a distinctly dystopian SF background. No one right in their mind, including diehard Kurita players such as myself, would ever consider the DC as a model of a society one would actually like to live in in real life.

The Clans are bad because they are stupidly and pointlessly idealized in order to appeal to a certain demographic.

Um... spain vs -well basically most of south america.... It is an apt analogue. The Spanish, fresh from war with the Moors, were experienced and disciplined soldiers moreso than their foes much like the clans. The spanish had superior technology like the clans. They viewed it as almost a religious duty much like the clans. Addtionally the IS is fractured into separate countries that don't necessarily like eachother. Plus the clans are not attacking all of the inner sphere at once so it's not like they're facing the entire populace...

Posted Image Have you read over what you typed? That is not a sneak attack. Let me highlight your mistake. A sneak ATTACK means you attack sneakily. The Clans issue a batchall. They let you know you are in danger & strike up a dialogue. They request information on the defenders assigned to the planet & will even let you choose where the fight will take place. Then on top of that sub commanders bid amongst themselves to reduce the number of warriors YOU will be facing. Not a shot has been fired yet.

You cannot call hovering for a week, issuing a challenge then waiting two more days (allowing the defenders AMPLE time to get their **** together) a sneak attack.

Meanwhile in the Inner Sphere, you wake up to the sounds of explosions & before you get out of your bunny slippers & into your combat boots, half your **** is blown up.

See the difference?

Bingo. I've seen stuff in this thread I haven't thought about for 15 years, but this is the crux of it. If you think clan tech ruined the game you can STILL play without it just like back in the old days if you want to. If you WANT to be in the current universe you need to get with the program properly.

I think a lot of the issues comes from people playing the game without much imagination. They didn't adapt their matches to reflect the story and the differences. They just used Clan tech because it was better.

I hate the Clans because no clanner ever would be a grizzled, 50-something badass grandpa smoking a cigar, shouting at his Betty, and complaining about how she sounds like his fat third ex-wife.

In single-player campaigns, both in MW and MC games, Clan enemies are great, because there is nothing more satisfying than bunging up a Clanner's top-of-the-line mech's gubbins with bits of your outclassed IS forces, prying their shiny bits from their cold, dead hands, then gleefully using it against its former owners.

Clan society and politics is bad, the only reason IS is better is because the goings-on are more hilarious. Hell, who wouldn't want to be a fly on the wall when Hanse Davion announced SW4? Got to admit though, Ghost Bear's collective Glasgow Kiss to the WoB was also pretty amusing.

The reason I don't like the Clans is they have the typical "My society is better than yours so I will force it on you" ideal then don't understand why they meet resistance.

Nahbro. Clanners can't speak properly, (Although if they could they'd have lighter tounges, which generates less heat and break the game, and could reconfigure their voices by swapping OmniVoiceboxes :D) so better to pick a method of combat we have the advantage in ;P

Too long to quote your whole post, but I just wanted to point out a few flaws.
1. By the time the great houses had set aside enough of their differences to organize combined assaults, the clans had already stabbed deep into the IS. Your "Tactic" while seeming sound, does not take the politics into account.
2. Comstar wouldn't sacrifce their ships to stop the clans like that. For one thing, they wanted to rule the universe themselves. For another, they would have wasted so many ships on actual diplomatic missions there wouldn't have been enough left to carry out these strikes.
3. The IS does not have this vast array of nukes to throw around. Technically they are banned. You wouldn't have the munitions to carry out the assualt you laid out.
4. The IS wouldn't nuke their own planets. They might lure the clans to a remote world and nuke that, but not their actual populations.
5. Building something like a spaceport is hard to do without a handy cache of lostech to build it with. Remember, much has been lost in all the fighting among the houses. Destroying their spaceport just to takeout some ships wouldn't have been a very viable option. Any IS commander would consider this a last resort option.
6. Lastly, all of the great houses had some code of honor that guided them. Mass ******** would not have sat well with any of them.

Now, on-topic: I disliked the clans because they became too self-asured of their superiority. When the houses banded together, the clans were soundly defeated, all the while shouting "This is imposible. We are superior!" their attitude resembles what ****** would have liked to make the world. While i enjoy some of the clan tech, I'd take a Catapult over a Vulture any day.
