Alright, I've never posted before, but I'm confused. Apparently there's a sale this week on 'Mechs. That's fine and all, but I was under the assumption that the game was still in Beta. As in Beta testing? If they're currently only testing the game right now and it hasn't been released, why would anybody pay real money to get something to test?

Or has the game been released, but since it isn't finished, they thought they'd call it Beta as an excuse for an incomplete product with lots of bugs that needs constant patches?

I haven't played the game yet, because I was waiting for it to be released, since I don't enjoy testing games (Alpha, Beta, or OTRs of any kind). So is the game live, in Beta, or in some sort of in-between limbo? Just curious as to its status so I know whether to await a release date or whatever.

It's the latter. Not to say the game isn't fun. But it's definitely not done and I would be careful what you spend MC on. I used it to buy a hero mech (YLW, regretted that) and to convert mech xp to group xp, as well as mech bays (Good with those expenditures).

Anything else is a waste of money currently, it's expensive and does not give any major benefit.

EDIT: Also I waited till a 20% off MC sale or whatever it was to buy some. I didn't spend a lot.

limbo in between. basically the devs released the minimal viable product in a beta format. the game will be considered "live" when community warfare is rolled out. i would look up the dev post stating this but i really don't feel like it.

You don't actually have to buy anything if you don't want. Most of us do buy stuff however, because it provide the devs a revenue stream and we all like tinkering with builds and such. The game really is in pretty good shape as it is and they're making improvements all the time, so I say download the client and jump in.

There are no more wipes; anything you buy NOW you will have in your account forever.

While many features are still in testing/balancing, the game servers and player accounts are LIVE.

It's still in beta. You don't need to spend money to play. The release date is unknown.

It's an F2P game.
That means they're gonna try their hardest to maintain this PR idea that it's in 'beta,' or it's a 'foundation release.'

For all intents and purposes, once money starts changing hands, it's released. Everybody here knows this.

Real release will happen because REASONS, when they have all the promised/speculated content, plus a ton more. So in...fifty years.

It's a beta that they are choosing to showcase as an opportunity to crowd-source as well. So, your money theoretically goes towards the continuing development of the game and your involvement adds to the metrics they use in beta testing.

See, the thing Is.. whatever you buy now, will be there when the game is "officially released".

So, buying things in the game would not be in vein right now.

Buy mc to get the devs some money. Don't spend it yet, or you will get hit with buyers remorse later. especially be wary of painting your mech because they will have so much more later. That said if your favorite mech is already released than you should be okay to get the hero of it.

Funny, I seem to remember buying Red Orchestra 2 and Battlefield 3 before their official release so I could Beta test those too. I pay in Betas to help support development and to help mold the game itself. Or I could just be like a lot of people here and make nonproductive snide comments.

The game is not done yet. It's no where near being done yet. But it's getting there. Patch by patch it's getting better, becoming more solid, and more fun. Yes, we've had a few steps backwards here and there, but the developers have been doing an excellent job overall.

More than anything, this game simply needs time. The developers are taking they're time to make sure they do it right. They've got a "quality-over-quantity" approach going, which I agree with... even though I itch for the next mech/map to come out.

Lets be real here. Time = Money, Money -> Development, Development -> Fun.

Ok, so the game's been released, just not "officially." Thanks to all who posted a serious reply.

This is true. It has become some sort of industry standard for games like these, simply because PR generally regards it as "safer" whilst Finances says "start selling now, we need monies". This is especially true of F2P games, but quite a lot of other titles were rushed as well, simply because the publisher knows that the worst bugs could be easily patched away in this day and age of internet. Labeling a game as "beta" then tends to reduce the backlash resulting from selling an unfinished product.

This being said, I do not regret having purchased a Founder's Pack, even after I was already in CB with a normal key. In fact, testing the game convinced me I should support it, and so I was happy to spend a few bucks to support the developer.

MWO is fun right now. Who cares whether the sign at the door says "beta" or not? The best thing ... it's only going to get better.

Holy crap, someone asking before spending their money, instead of spending money and then acting like the devs tricked them somehow? This is amazing!

It's a Beta, it's not finished, but they're allowing us to play as much of the game as they have finished right now, and some people choose to spend money on it.

So if you think you'll enjoy near-endless customization, as well as the opportunity to take your customized mech and blow up other mechs with it, no need to wait: Dive right in! Paying, despite what some people would have you think, is completely voluntary. PGI won't force you to pay a dime, nor will they somehow trick you into it.
