I can't honestly understand the deal with this. When did liking/Hating something become such a big deal?

I used to be a brony, then I took an arrow to the knee... about 4 episodes into season 2.

Its based mostly on the fact that this fanbase completely polarized the communities it was formed in. The pony culture came about in dark hives such as something awful, reddit, and 4chan, where cute cuddly things teaching trolls to not be dicks is a horrible thing. Fearing both a change in the culture of the respective boards (reflected by all the love and tolerance being spread), as well as the next desu or All Your Base level meme being about candy colored ponies (strangely enough made to happen by their own actions anyway), a large section of these trollmunities who disliked or didn't care about the show came together to try and crush the up and coming pony fanbase. Finding that one can be nice AND annoying made pre-brony ponies happy, and as such any blockading of ponymeme was met with very heavy resistance, and eventually the ponification of memes, statements, and hate thrown at the newly formed brony movement.

In time most of these hives of scum and villany came to (at least temporarily) ban ponies and ponymeme, causing an exodus of ponyists to ponified variants such as ponychan, ponibooru, and nambla The Ponyfiction Archives. Now clumps of pony exist on most sites just like any other fanbase or online movement or meme (since we have a chuck norris chucklebox and a toast thread in this forum as evidence, and the hex monkeys have started to form groups separate from the computer-chair mech-jocks, separated along faction lines in both cases), the main difference is that we were born of strife and essentially civil war between castes of trolls, and as such carry both the tendencies and stigma of what we once were. The show is ultimately benign and just a scapegoat, and our culture is no different then any other fanbase with a rich mixture of casual and dedicated fans (also neckbeards) who mostly just want a place to talk about our shared interests. However, since we had to form the bonds of community to keep from being completely crushed in our infancy (like what happened to cyberpunk back in the day, when the media jumped on the formation of the concept too early, pissed that they missed regular punks emergance, making it mainstream before it was even truely formed) we are seen as clicky and cultlike (saying 'welcome to the herd' doesn't help either). Additionally the tendency for some to spam ponies when harassed or threatened (and the tendency for others to do it because they are dicks) causes us to catch a lot of flack online, where our presence is greatest. Though from personal experience we don't draw as much heat in realspace, since people don't want to be seen shouting explatives at strangers based on something they would then have to explain to all the muggles staring at them who wouldn't know a meme if it mudkipped them in the knee for great justice. That and some of us ponies are big, in public with friends, and recognized locally as those people who are always at the gun range.

Hope this cleared things a bit, if not then here is a picture of AppleJack, looking as confused as you probably are. Posted Image

I think Souske wins the internet for the, hands down, best explanation of the love/hate polarization of the brony community.

Souske going Bill Nye explaining Bronies

I don't really consider myself a brony (have seen the show before with my daughter) but I do appreciate some of the jokes I've seen as well as some of the very good spoofs/fan art people have produced related to the show. This might just be because I was a very big anime fan when younger and the bronies remind me very much of the otaku of the 90's/early 00's, though with a bit less creepyness (save for the R34's).

Honestly I've found the rage between fandoms to always be kind of, well, idiotic. Star Wars vs Trek, 40k vs non-40k, Potter vs Twilight, all of them. Speaking of which, can we PLEASE get rid of the 'Not as gay as Twilight' meme? It's not only offensive, but not even funny. All of these properties have gained fans for different reasons, and all have things about them that are ripe for mockery. Poking fun or satire is fine, but pure hate or agressiveness against a fanbase is at best useless and worse counterproductive. Making fun of someone for liking something as simple as a story is unlikely to get them over to your side of thinking and most likely will just make you and your fellow fans look like douches.

Even Battletech isn't free from this; we're fans of giant robots in a neo-feudal future that goes from Mad-Max to Attack of the Clones to a religious jihad by the future equivilant of the PHONE COMPANY. That's not even counting the base stereotypes we get as Tabletop and Computer gamers. Instead of hating someone for liking something, why not just focus on what WE enjoy and love, and if someone want's a yellow and pink mech skin with butterflies on it thats fine..........................they'll be easier to spot at long range with my Catapult.
