Mechwarrior, has never. Ever. EVER had floating damage text. Your argument about all the MMO's that have it; guess what?! THEY'RE ACTION RPGS!!!!
This is a simulator, to make you feel like you're actually in the mech. The reason why Battletech told you how much damage your weapons did is so you'd actually know when the hell you killed something, so the game could actually progress.
The floating numbers would be highly redundant, because if you look at the top right of your screen.... OMG A PAPER DOLL OF THE ENEMY MECH THAT SHOWS THE DAMAGE YOU INFLICT ON IT!!!! ZOMG!!!!!
