If you press W you set the speed your mech will move at, you do not "hold it to walk forward".

This is "normal". Being able to regulate your throttle is part of how you control a mech. If we didn't have this we would not be able to walk at anything other than 0 or 100% which would make no sense in a game like this.

It's a throttle system like in airplanes. Try x for full stop. Source: https://mwomercs.com...rounds#controls

"W" is not 'move forward', it is increasing your throttle (like in a plane), 'S' is reduce throttle. This is not a standard 1st person shooter, it is more of a first person tank-on-legs shooter.

It's called a throttle control system. You set the throttle (aka the speed). It's not a gas pedal style throttle as in a car. It's more akin to what you'd see in many armored vehicles, boats/ships and aircraft. Mechs are something you pilot, not drive.

Movement is normal for 'mech games. Actually you wouldn't believe how complicated the controls for other 'mech games were!

Hell a joystick used to be your friend ~`8P Here's your referral..

(Did I mention they're adding a sandbox as part of the new user flow and to give players means to test weapons)

I think they should introduce a sideways steps. This would bring more agility.

Sidestep/strafing should be in the game, but only on Quadruped mechs (Xanthos, Scorpion, etc). Would give them a neat reason to exist.

I think you would find that your finger would get very tired if you had to hold W down the entire time.

The controls are in fact "normal" for a game like this (slow, with tanks. Not fast, with humans)

No, this change is out of canon, out of logic and while this is just a cheesy extended FPS rather than a SIM or a MMO, it is quite well dumbed down enough already.

Play a lot of FPS games? ;)

No slight intended... this is a common mistake to players new to Mechwarrior combat.

While similar to your WSAD control layout, A and D do not strafe but turn your Mech on it's medial axis. (steering) and the W and S incrementally / decrease your "throttle" as well as change your linear direction (forward or reverse)

Unlike most FPS, piloting a Battlemech requires fine movement control and as such the inputs are graduated input and not absolutes.
