not to take this as an attack thom, i am merely discussing why i designed andrei the way i did.

Andrei may indeed be less experienced than half the characters in this RP, but in my opinion at least, it gives me far more options on how to make a good character than someone who this is simply the same s***, different planet. your character has been hauling his rear around the periphery for years as a pirate. he has seen all the stuff that is about to go down. but that (least that is how i would end up playing it.) leaves him with a much less emotional perspective of the situation. Andrei, at least the way i have him planned, is as much about the enemies inside his head (no he is not insane, he is just afraid of what happens if he starts enjoying what he is doing) as the ones on the battlefield. That is what i was going to use to make him, him.

Wasn't planning to run it that way Shepard, but that's not a bad concept, gonna steal it if you don't mind. :(

Nah I wasn't taking this or the other one as an attack. In fact I was wondering where the age issue came up from. But, you're assumption of Billy is pretty much on target, despite being the youngest he's seasoned. But that being said, he's more used to smash and grab missions, not slugging matches.

Why thank you. I'm glad to finally find a good Battletech RP. I didn't think I'd ever find one XD

On the topic of the age discussion; Alan, despite being oldish for our group is probably one of the less battle hardened since he spent most of his piloting experience protecting backwater planets during peace time.

wow, guess i started a storm... @dal10, no offense was intended... as far as TOG would be concerned, the whole lot of you are "pups". maybe it would help to note that he saw his first action in a 'Mech in late 3013... a wee bit before any of the rest of this dance's characters were born.

that said, perhaps you have also noticed that TOG is unsettled with his age and some number of memories from the past (especially the Mei-Li memories that seeing Spokes has triggered). as I'm playing him, some of his attitude is based on feeling out of place... like he has outlived anyone and everyone he has ever really known and now has only his profession to focus on and live for.

not sure if that helps explain things, but if my last response in our banter about the small 'Mech leg was at all troubling, I apologize.

you literally have to try in order to offend me, and will probably fail even then, so don't worry about it.

the age thing was just something i was thinking about, nothing major was intended by it. your post is just what was triggered by it.

fair enough. btw, truth in posting fact: i'm 50+ (though not as old as TOG), so i am at times at least a little familiar with how TOG is feeling.

Since the question has been raised on what the terrain is like, I will respond with the fact that the map I provided earlier is a heavily modified satellite image of Austria. (If you don't believe me, look at the northern border on the map and on google maps.
Terrain is similar, but not the same. Temperate forests, maybe a little frost or snow on the ground (I figure it's around October or so).

As for buildings, Jarrund City is THE city on Kharkand, everything else qualifies as a hamlet, town, or a micro city. The majority of Kharkand's population is centered in or around Jarrund. On our approach to the city we will likely pass small farming communities, tiny rural manufacturing complexes and the like, but mostly the former.
Later on inside the city, it will be a Urban environment with lots of Civilians, I hope you brought your jumpjets. :)
Posts/PMs with contacts will be forthcoming.

I'd like to have a little bit more information Janitor, if it's not too much trouble. The sat map doesn't really help in knowing what the ground looks like. I've never been to Austria, but I live on the Colorado front range and the terrain in the foothills can get very difficult very fast.

--Player notes--

I'm essentially writing my character as I go, and I started writing some notes in response to the question "How much does Spokes know about communications equipment and protocols?" This is more or less OOC information for the moment, but I thought it would be helpful to put this up for review and comment.

**********************
Spokes has operated in stressful, dangerous environments before and is old enough to have made some mistakes and learned from them. She's done search-and-rescue work in a hostile environment, and has used her 'Mech as a mobile comm relay before. Her homeworld has no atmosphere and no magnetic field, with a close horizon and an energetic star. She knows her way around the comm system. :)

A quick and dirty analogy would be a watertanker/firefighter pilot.

Some notes. . .

She doesn't speak the language. Every profession has its own jargon, and Spokes doesn't know more than basic, basic military lingo. If you say 'Echelon, left', she'll probably figure it out. If you say 'Dragging wing', blank stare.

She is very tired. Spokes rode in on a dropship and then spent most of the previous 24 hours trying to talk her way out of the brig. It's not much of an issue now, but it could get that way. I don't know how much the exhaustion will carry over comms-- her Scorpion's comm gear has a pretty heavy electronic filter on it.

She is operating in an unfamilar environment. It is entirely possible that Spokes has never seen a tree before, excepting holovids and such. Can I walk through that bit of woods? Will that riverbed hold my Mech's weight? Is snow dangerous? Above ground buildings? Things most people take for granted are going to give her pause.

She has no combat experience. Spokes has had a few close calls over the years, but has never been in a situation where someone was actively trying to kill her. She has had very little practical gunnery training. I don't really know how I'm going to play this. . .the fluff in the TRO says the Scorpion is a pretty forgiving fire platform. If the terrain restricts enemy movement, she might be able to reliably land PPC shots at medium range. I don't see her panicking at the first sign of battle. We'll see.

She may not know how to shoot, but she does know how to drive. Spokes has a decade of experience conning her Scorpion, half supervised, half solo. She is used to operating the machine in difficult terrain and in close quarters with dismounted workers who are paying attention to something else. Her 'Mech's movements are controlled and fluid.

She is attached to her 'Mech. I know some of you are looking to swap out your rides, but Virgil is part of my character's family ties and its loss would be a major blow. I'm not even sure if Spokes would be able to drive a biped 'Mech without some serious training time.

Photographs will do better then I can.

Foto ein.
Foto zwei.
Foto drei.

I specifically selected photos of Mountains, or hills cause we're in the foothills of the mountains.

Anyways, terrain is roughly like that.

@Janitor: that helps. I would guess that the dark area right in front of us then is is reality a heavy wood (the Kobemausser Wald) and that Jarrund is ESE of Linz by some five to ten km. Is the light area farmland (ie., also similar)? It also means that our main body to the south is running into ugly terrain with what is actually the E60 and E55 being the main bottleneck. Our problem will be the woods... lot of stuff can hide in the Wald...

@Spokes: no problem at all, if anything I was making some assumptions about the character background that you are confirming. Just ask questions... in a unit it would be expected and ill advised is the Sergeant who blows off such, especially when the unit is cobbled together just before combat is expected. Even a veteran may not know all the acronyms used in another branch, better to ask and be safe than sorry.

spokes, we should get someone to duct tape a laser pointer to your ppc to see where it is pointed at.
