In the massive tin-foil conspiracy craze that has gripped the forums lately, a few people have been referencing this site.

MWO Heartbeat

It is a date. Well...in a way. If you notice the number is constantly changing. If you refresh quickly, you will see that it increases by +1 approximately every second.

Therefore the total number of seconds currently is 1338525072
Divide by 60, you get 22308751.2 minutes
DIvide by 60, you get 371812.52 hours
Divide by 24, you get 15492.18833 days
Divide by 365, you get 42.444351 years.

Subtract 42 years from 2012, you get 1970.

What is significant about this date?

This is called Unix Time people!

More specifically, it is the amount of seconds that have passed since January 1st, 1970 in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). It is used in many linux systems.

Therefore
June 1st, 2012 is 1338523948
June 2nd, 2012 =1338592348
June 6th, 2012 = 1339024348
etc, etc....

EDIT: COULD THIS BE THE SOURCE OF THE ARTEMIS LOG INC. DATA TRANSMISSION?

What if this is the key to the numbers on the Artemis Log file?

See that number digit right there? 13-37-43-731?

It isn't a 10 digit number, but if you tack on a zero to that number and remove the dashes, you have 1337437310.

Convert this to Unix time, and it gives you Saturday, May 19th, 2012, at 14:21:50 GMT

This was just days before the launch of Operation: Inception.

It's not exact, but it is very close. Is it possible that Artemis is connected to the Beta? Especially since Bryan stated no more keys will be given out until after E3, which is when the timer for Artemis ends.

Go fellow tinfoilers!

EDIT No. 2:

An Artemis/Beta Connection is also supported by this screenshot

so they made a page that calls System.getTime() and prints the returned long value? I wish I was getting paid to do this job.

An interesting thing is that the page source does not reference any other pages or scripts:

<head>
<meta http-equiv="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<meta http-equiv="60" />
<title>MWO | Heartbeat</title>
</head>
<body> 1338526016</body>
</html>

No scripts, no references to any source of the timer. I mean, it's obviously Unix Time, but the page is being remotely updated every second, it's not updating itself.

Its called an "epoch", that is, an arbitrary point in time chosen as the reference point.

The epoch for Apple, for example, is sometime in the 80's, I think.

Alright, I'll ask the obligatory question. Why would they bother to do so?

Just have to generate the document server side before sending it to the client. php can do this quite easily. I believe the php method is "Date()". Not a php expert myself, but if you put that between the body tags, the server see's it, replaces it with the appropriate output, and send it down. client would never see the php code, just the repalced text.

And they bother because it get's people talking more, however pointless it is ;)

Check the update in the OP...this seems like too good of a coincidence...

Doesn't mean there can't be a script that publishes the new page every second. It is kind of creepy, I'll give them that.

Hate to break the tinfoil hat squad up... but..

Most likely explanation, is it is one method of keeping all the game clients in sync with each other.. forcing the client (and server) to all synchronize to one source.

What will the "Heartbeat" timer value be when the Artemis Clock runs out?

What he said! Wouldn't be the first game to do it in such a public fashion.

It'll just keep counting. We've got quite a bit of time before it runs out of bits to increment.

Yes the heartbeat probably does this. The update was recognizing that if you convert the digits on the Artemis Log Inc transmission to Unix time, which is used by the heartbeat, it gives us a date that is just a few days before the Closed Beta Launch.

I am not saying heartbeat has any real correlation to anything in the Beta. But when the time system it uses is just coincidentally applied to a random 9 digit number given to us in an Artemis transmission by the devs reveals a date just 3 days before the launch of Operation: Inception?

Come on, what are the odds of that?

Except... converting that "IP Address" from the Artemis log doesn't get you that.. to come up with that UNIX time, a different number was used..since a zero was added on.. that's more forcing the "problem" to match the solution you want (in my opinion).

E3 is open from 12pm - 6pm Pacific time on Tues, June 5th.
The Artemis Clock runs out at 4pm that day (11:00:00 GMT)... an odd time to choose...perhaps.
