There's propably tons of similar topics and i udnerstand what an issue this is. First of all, I'm a big fan of the 3rd person view to view my mech from time to time, it helps the immersion dramaticaly. On the other hand, i know that playing the game in this camera would mean a lot of refinement and work from the side of the developers. However there could be a solution if the 3rd person view would be available only when there's no visible enemy mechs in your range. Another idea which i would love to see is a recording option. This would add a lot in immersion. :D View your approach after the battle, zoom the camer freely etc. What do you guys think?

From the Developers (specifically, MWO's Lead Designer, Paul Inouye):

Quote

MechWarrior Online is being designed to put you the player in the seat of the pilot. It is 100% first person view only. Being the pilot is one of our key design pillars and 3rd person breaks that pillar on multiple levels as seen in many of the other 3rd Person discussions.

We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.

While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

-Paul
Lead Designer

With regard to a recording option:
Of interest is that the Beagle Active Probe canonically "includes a memory unit that records the events of a battle and allows for later playback".

"This includes the ability for the user to "re-fight" the battle by making different tactical decisions, which are then analyzed and implemented by the system, allowing for the resulting consequences to be observed."
(This capability is described in TRO 2750, within the entry for the HTC-213B Hellcat II.)

This would be in addition to the "BattleROM" (data-recorder/"black box"/gun-cam system) that is a standard feature of BattleMechs.

However, the above is merely the fluff/canon justification for such a thing to be available as a "replay" to be made available only after a match has been completed.
It would remain to be seen whether the Devs have the interest to actually implement such functions...

With your request, you are disregarding as well as justifying the reasons for 3rd person view not being implemented.

Unfair advantage.

May also be considered cowardice to some extent. 3rd person view would just make things (like LRM boats) completely uncool. Please stop asking for this.

You didn't understand my point of view. I don't want to battle in the 3rd person mode. I want to check out my mech, feel its presence and admire it in different angles. I understand that its very difficult to implement in a multiplayer mode and i fully agree that it would bring unfair game elements. I dont want an arcade shooter ! i always loved mechwarrior as a sim. Im just missing the external cam for viewing my admirable battle machine

To be clear: it is not an "Unfair" advantage. It would only be an unfair advantage if one player could do it while another could not. However, I still agree that it shouldn't be available during play, because of immersion. Battlerecorder, otoh...

viewing your mech from 3rd person during match start-up and during the victory would be nice(re-cap the last moments of the match with a fancy camera view). and during your own mech's destruction

I hear ya on this part. I wanna see my mech, walk around it or be able to spin it around similar to EVE when you're docked. Get up close and look waaaaay up at it. No, not in a match. But in the MechLab, heck yeah!

I think we should just be able to look at our mechs in the mech bay, full-360

I would not be against having 3rd person look around your mech at the end of a match. I mean as in what happened in Mechwarrior 4 when you won Solaris matches. For playing through the game it would be awful. In Mechlab though, the ability to rotate the positioning of your mech with your mouse would be very cool. What would be better is seeing your mech change appearance as you changed the weapons load-out. For example you would get different muzzles for a LBX AC10, Machine gun, AC5 etc. This would be really good when omni-mechs appear with the clan invasion.

I think this thread needs transferring to the ideas section...

The main problem with 3rd person view is that mech pilots ride in the cockpit, not on the roof of their mech. That being said, I also believe that it is 1st person view that works better for game immersion. And I'll dare to venture I'm not the only on that feels that way.

Well if/when they put in paint schemes and or decals for your Mech, then I do hope they have 3rd person in the Mechlab so you can see the results of what you made. Otherwise, I'd say no. Mechlab would be the only place its needed.
