  • Added game modes (currently only Assault) to battle logs and filters.
  • Added privacy settings anonymous / public. You can set privacy the "Privacy" link in the top rigth corner (when logged in).

2012-12-08 - version 0.0.9 beta

  • I would really appreciate if you guys gave me some input in this thread.

*****************************

Hey guys,

First of all, I'm pretty new to this game. In fact i started playing last week! Enjoying my Jenner-D build a lot ;)

Now, I wanted to keep track of my battles in order to show progression/patterns and give myself goals to improve. I could have used an Excel spreadsheet, but where's the fun in that. So I figured it would be nicer to create a website.

So I started this yesterday, and after a couple of hours of work, I think I have something that could be interesting to share. Keep in mind that I'm a software engineer and create management websites as my day job, but I'm no Web Designer. So the web design could dramatically be improved over time, especially if some of you have solid web design skills.

Now onto the screenshots so you guys know what I'm talking about:

If I hosted this website somewhere, would you be interested in using something like this?

I think they just need to hire you to be the engineer they have been looking for.

Also impressed.
You've done what I have been waiting months for in a jiffy.

The features I have planned are:
  • Improved security
  • Allow for a private/non-shared profile so that your stats stay personnal and not on the website
  • More stats, some graphs, and even more stats.
  • Search/drill-down features : view results by users/mech model/mech variant/maps/etc.
  • Clans support? Allow to create a clan page (lists members) and allows to view clan members only stats.
  • Throw more ideas here.
Any feedback?

This looks very useful to track performance.
However, where does one get the raw data to input to the tool?
Do I I need to screenshot my result page and do manual data entry?

I'm sure I read somewhere that PGI were going to have an API key system similar to EVE, if I haven't just made that up then that would be awesome to link to a site like this so it inputs everything automatically.

Sears is absolutely right. You have to enter everything by hand. That means you could write pretty much anything right now in the stats. Some might ask "But what would be the point", well know that IF something can be done, someone will do it just for the heck of it ;)

So, if/when I'm going to put this site online and public, it would most likely still have to be manual entries until PGI exposes a public API to allow automated stats tracking. But, in the meantime, I thought of a manual system using roles.
  • A screenshot is required with every battle log entry. I'll do a drag and drop widget à la Google Mail so it only takes 2 seconds to drag/drop your screenshot.
  • Everyone can view the screenshot and "report" a battle log that is falsified.
  • After 3-5-10-whatever reports, a user is deactivated until I get in touch with him.
All of this easily implementable in about 2 hours of work.

As for the manual entry: after each game I take a screenshot. Once the game is over I open the screenshot and copy the fields. They are dispose to maximize data entry. Then I click on the map I just played. Finally i use of the 4 buttons representing the possible battle outcomes (win + alive / win + death / loss + alive / loss + death).

See the New Battle Log screen : http://imageshack.us...wbattlelog.png/

All of this takes less than 30 seconds to do.

And it IS fun to see the progression / build up of stats.

I would totally use this. I like to keep track of my training progress.

Great!

I guess I'll have a look as to where I can host this during the week.

Or I could simply host it here if I can find enough spare parts to run a 24/7 webserver (I have a 50 mbit symetrical internet connection at home so that should cut it).

I'm thinking about more useful features right now:

A) Map variant (night)
;) Team start location (NW, SE, etc)
:P Strategy used (user configurable list)

All could be optional, but if indicated it would really help to see what works better in what conditions.

Option to choose if you're pugging or in a group(2-8) to track how you do lone wolf or with friends/merc/clan. Also list the alternative forest colony and frozen city maps? Since you have c-bills earned and repair costs have a 'banked c-bills' to keep track of winnings/loses easier. Scratch that. I see you have a Profits column on a different page. Is there a place to date battle entry's or does it just date then the day/time you enter them? On the my mechs page will it show the W/L or all stats for each mech?

Don't take all these questions/suggestions as a bad thing. I'd use the site as is and love every minute of it. Always nice tI have a fresh par of eyes and some ones else's perspective. Hope to see this come to life.

GREAT suggestions and thanks for the feedback! I'll see if I can implement them quickly.

Right now battle time is the time of creation of the battle log. But I could very easily expose a datetime picker so you could specify what time the battle was fought.

I'd also plug in a widget for suggestions (like User Voice) to let you guys vote for the next feature.

I can see a lot of Units being interested in accessing a system like this. I highly encourage you to continue your efforts.

unless pgi releases an api which you can use to make this automated it is an utter waste of time. would kinda be like eve api killmail/battleclinic services

S!

At least Arnon is making something the game is lacking at the moment. With an API it would be a very nice tool for those who like to roll through statistics..and there are a lot of them out there ;)

That was the funniest thing I've seen in weeks...

On topic: EA might have your *** for trying to use the name "battlelog" (you know how big companies treat their IP. Not sure if it is their IP though...) but I do like the idea. Always useful for a game of Top Trumps with your friends! Many merc groups/clans/whatever will undoubtedly want something like this, in fact I'm amazed I haven't seen it asked for already (unless I missed it, of course).

What other mechwarrior esque names could you use?

Was it the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission on MW4 Mercs MRBC?
