outside of north america

Nash - You mentioned that EU servers may be introduced at 2013. My question is: Will your pilot name be available on both servers (North America and Europe) or only on one of them? (I ask because otherwise it could happen that 2 different people are taking the same pilot name one at North America and the other at Europe
A: Each region is has its own database and unique user names. Regions do not play with or against each other.

Really hope they rethink this.

It'd be terrible if they suddenly said I couldn't play with the people I've made friends with over the past year.

Well they are adding the server to reduce lag in games. If people could play on the further away server then that would kind of defeat the purpose. So for pick up games I think thats how it should be. However maybe they should make a way for full teams to be able to battle each other if they are ok with the lag.

But I'm wondering what is going to happen with the Australians? I assume they will still be on the NA server which means they will still be laggy. Maybe they could move the NA server south a bit or get Australia a server.

Hopefully they will allow players to choose which server they want to play on.. its to bad they can't interlock the servers somehow

Why can't we just have one global account, where we can choose what region we want to play for however long we want?

There are plenty of good reasons to play in a different region. For example, what if I have time to play at 4.00am Euro time, it will be hard to find Euro players but if I go the US servers they are 6 hours behind at least and I am playing during their prime time.

It's asinine, we've have all have to play on NA servers, which while annoying has led to some cool friendships forming in different geographic regions and then we get shafted...again...thanks I guess.

you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill. If they add this feature it will say which server to connect to US/EU/ASIA if you want to connect to a US server and are in the EU you still will be able to. This is only to reduce lag for EU players cause it makes it much harder for them to land skill shots. The OP claiming this will kill the player base is a troll or extremely stupid, possibly both.

Just give us lobbies, and we can setup games however we feel like.

Quote

1.2 Can players, that are currently playing on the NA server move their account to the European game region? Or is it a "fluent" system where you are assigned via matchmaking to the best fitting game server?

A: Our goal would be to offer a onetime transfer option. Regions will have their own servers and unique accounts.

So each of us will have the choice on which server he wants to play.
And if you transfer early, you will most likely keep your pilot name.

So i don't share the OPs doubts, especially not because his post is missing any arguments.
How should the devs rethink their plans if he is not telling them the problem he sees?

Regions not playing against each other is a MUST HAVE, otherwise the whole process of adding regional servers to fight lag is pointless.

And separate databases is probably a technical requirement for their networking and isn't that much of a problem when we can transfer everything to the region we like.

Edit:
What concerns me however is how they manage the forums.
I'd like to keep posting here directly at the source instead on an european board where there probably is no direct communication between the devs and the community and it is even more unlikely that they will be able to read my suggestions.

I've now been playing quite a while with a ping of 150 and would definitely be happy about a local server. However I do not understand the necessity for regions, except for marketing purposes. It's the same idiocy that gives us weird region codes for DVDs and makes my Nintendo E-Mail all in French, just because they have no seperate region for my country where we have 3 languages.

Segregation of a community that has existed for over half a year (or longer depending on when EU / other regional severs come) just always seems like a bad idea. Database replication and centralized login servers are technically feasible nowadays, from that point of view there isn't much reason to split the community.

I really, really do hope that this does not mean that MWO is going to be handled by BigPoint, Gamigo or other, similar game service providers. Their service is flaky and dissatisfying at most. No matter what SLA PGI/IGP may have with them, it would be horrible.

Disagree, we are doing fairly fine as it with mixed regions and it is a lot more fun than being stuck playing only with people from certain countries.

Besides, the community isn't so large that we have to split it apart.

Regional servers would be awesome if they were fluid, where one could choose when to use them, otherwise it's just taking away a necessary choice from the user.

Is it really that difficult to manage the mechs and cbills on one server and host a game on another?

I hope that we can freely choose which servers we wish to play on, it will be irritating If I have to make a one off decision :P

Also the title made me think this was another whine topic

Someone needs to drill a hole through the center of the earth and out the other side so we can run some fiber optics.

I disagree here. :)

The best ping i can get is 129 (goes up to 210 during rush times), and Australians for example can only dream of those pings.
So we are totally not doing fine when several regions are mixed up.

And the size of the community is not the reason why PGI seem to split it, because every dev knows that splitting the community is not good and should only be done when there is no alternative.
My guess is that the underlying network layer of the game is not suited for fluid server switching while retaining a global player profile.

I would love to keep my profile and forum account here and simply choose the server which manages my matches during login. But i'm sure PGI has a good reason why they have to split up things.

But we always have the chance that they are able to overcome the problems which prevent fluid server switching.

I hope players can choose between what server they play on, and since it is free it shouldn't be too much of an issue to have an account on both...

Would really suck for them to split the playerbase though, I enjoy playing with people outside the US.

I have made approximately 100 new friends over the course of beta split evenly between Europe, North America, and Asia. I really have no interest in being split from them.

You will be able to pay with your US buddies.

You can chose:
Leave your main account here, and level a new one on EU.
Transfer your account to EU nd make a new one for US.

There probably will be a founders pack for the EU start, good if you want to start a new one.

The reason for not being able to chose freely is that they will have different databases, so if the canadian servers are fully down you can still play on eu.

They could, however indicate on your friend list, who has moved, who hasnt, and maybe have the same purchases unlocked on your eu account that you had on the other one.

Wow, too much doom and gloom. Unless someone posts a link stating we are all getting split up, you guys are totally making a storm in a tea cup.

PS- i'm in Aus, so you guys complaining about 120-150 ping need to wake up!
