This is a brilliant way for them to get more accurate ELO ratings for individual players. I almost never play solo (unless testing new builds) and I am sure there are plenty of people out there like me.

Since we are always playing in a group, I assume its actually very hard to get an accurate individual rating for these players. It's a great way to get people playing a lot of games, and to get them excited to test out the ELO system. Honestly, this is pure brilliance from a marketing and gameplay standpoint.

Unless I mis-read the announcement, they are taking a player's top 3 scores in each class over the tournament period and aggregating it. If a player is good, their scores should be pretty consistent from match to match and if so, it should not take more than 5 matches per class to put up some decent scores.

The only time number of matches is going to count is when there is a tie and I think that's just for 1st place (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).

This is a test run only and since Phase 3 just kicked off with some really odd match ups occurring, how can the results of this tournament be considered to be anything but something that's just for fun.

Edit: Please note that the top 3 scores interpretation is probably incorrect, see subsequent post here. Thanks to Grissnap for the correction.

Everybody Like this topic all the way to the top!

The percentage off of the Hero Mech's should be Very High (60%>) because PGI loves to give back to the community that support them.
Who knows. Maybe if they notice after the event, that the community purchased A Lot of Mech's because the prices were so much more reasonable - they may consider to lower the prices of everything.

It is basic Economics, if the price is there a lot more people are going to want to purchase it.

Oh, PGI. If you happen to see this post. I'm afraid I have a complaint:

You have not allowed us to tweak the colors of our 'Founder' Mech pattern.
It only allows you to select one single color and it is a tiny almost unrecognizable stripe.
The other 2 colors are blocked and are unmodifiable.

Not only that, but you cannot change the Skin of the Founder mechs. Those fields are inaccessible.

I'm sure that this just got overlooked as Founder Mech's came out before the launch.
Because you certainly have done well on designing a great game!

Could you please correct this problem, and maybe re-do the founder Mech skin? ;)
I noticed that you guys have really improved on your Skin's...
Maybe even make a Skin that represents Founder Status.

I picture Legendary Ominous with Lighting Bolts.. ;)

Haha, brillant way to boost ELO and yeah - probably a new motivation for quite some folks to start up their Mech again. ;)

Curious to see how Players will behave...

I think you did. The wording is a bit muddled, but basically, the top 3 scores (as in the people with the top 3 scores; it should probably have read scorers) will be champions (ranked Gold for first, Silver for second, Bronze for third) for each division (overall, assault, heavy, medium, light).

The scores (to determine the top scorers) are determined as per the section labeled Scoring.

Wait, are you saying that they are going to accumulate the scores of all the matches everyone plays?

Because the way I am reading it is this is beat your own record. They are testing out their new ELO.
At the end of each match we will have a score based on the following:
Win/Loss Ratio, Kills, Kill Assists, Capture Assists, Spotting Assists, and Games Played.

Oh Games Played. Well I wonder how that works. I do not have a lot of time where I can sit down and play,
I'm already in the IT industry as it is. So I already sit at a computer a lot.
It would be cool if they had a rank just for the highest score you can get at the end of a match for this competition.
Then it would almost be like trying to beat your own best record.

On re-checking and also re-reading this part, I believe you're right. However, still doesn't mean you need to play MWO for 48 hours unless you're seriously competing and worried about a possible tie.

Rewards

Winners will be announced on Tuesday February 26, 2013. Confirmed winners for each challenge will received a cockpit banner on March 5th. There are a total of 15 banners to be earned.

The top three scores in each leaderboard challenge will receive:
  • 1st Place - Gold Banner
  • 2nd Place - Silver Banner
  • 3rd Place - Bronze Banner

...snip

Only time aggregation of scores will take place is for determining MechWarrior Champion and that is only an aggregate of the player's best scores from the various class. Oops, yes they will be aggregating the scores etc but the term "Matches Played" sounds to me like it will be used as the denominator to work out the average.

Flame me all you want, but you all know this will be won by aim bots. In game events are a great idea, but its just too bad that there is no way to stop the cheaters from cracking the game. I guess paying $25 to buy that added edge for a loser who can't aim makes them feel justified. I would actually be somewhat impressed if these losers actually knew how their crack worked or had any idea how to code it. Until PGI finds a way to detect and squash these pissants there is no point in even bothering to keep score. Fortunately there are enough rightous players to make most matches legitimate stompy robot fights. For the haters who have to cheat to get ahead, well nice work in driving a game you should love into the ground but your not fooling anyone.

You seem pretty mad about robots.

While I harbour no illusions that I am in the top 3 of any class, I'm going to aim to be in the top 200 players. I am assuming there will be a full list, or some sort of message sent to indicate what place we were in?

I like the overall direction of this idea, but would like to have dedicated Solaris-VII server instead. For an open competition there are few major and minor issues which will impact all players gameplay expirience:

Raven RVN-3L in Light breket will ruin most PUG matches as usual, the difference is, that there will be waaay more those unbalanced creatures during weekend.
Alt+F4 farmers could negatively impact lot of matches too, as I see it.
Massive ECM equipped Mechs deployment will rip good LRM-carriers players out of their share of glory (don't count me as one, but I've definetely seen some good thinking players on LRM-boats around).

Nevertheless, I opt-in and hope that PGI will draw conclusions from what would happen soon (fix you know what and balance you know what!).

P.S. And yeah, I expect most intrigue to boil in the Medium breket, my prognosis for top-rating:
  • Overall: abused by RVN-3L + overfarmed by AS7-D-DC + something done in other classes
  • Light: abused by RVN-3L or overfarmed by really skilled pilot (I truly believe that skilled pilots don't use 3L untill it will be balanced)
  • Medium: no idea, maybe CNT-YLW
  • Heavy: CTF-IM or Splatcat
  • Assault: AS7-D-DC
