I really don't think the game is that bad for newbies. Back in closed beta when I started, before cadet bonus, I didn't really struggle. A few matches of wobbling around trying to find where I'm pointing, then I was set. Never played any other mech games before in my life(although I am now correcting that). It's certainly a lot easier to get into than say, DOTA 2, CS:S, or even WoT. It's a rather simple game really. Aside from the odd batch of bad trial mechs, I really don't see the problem. Sure a tutorial would be nice, but even without, it's not hard to have a quick gander at the keybinds to figure out whats what.

When I started it was easy to move around WASD and fire. But I had to watch the video tutorials on the Training Grounds to get the hang of the rest of the stuff cause it's foreign to most new players. Like Group fire controls and Chain fire, etc. Then I almost quit cause of all the losses I was suffering and thinking I just didn't get this game. Now it's taken almost 2 months for me to finally feel like I have a handle on most of the nuances. Plus I have a co-worker who was in CB as a founder and he gives me alot of tips. Makes for fun water cooler talk( well for he and I at least)...haha!

then why do they look so much better, and control so much better on consoles hmm? it's because they're custom made just for consoles to be much better that's why.

Oh I beg to differ. All the games on my PC look and run better than on my PS3 by far. I don't know what universe you live in.

This game rocks BECAUSE it's hard on new players. Tired of playing easy games like COD.

Whos crying? I am not crying. I am saying you are wrong. My PC can and does produce better graphics and performs bettern than my PS3. My PS3 is really just my bluray player.

All the next gen consoles are really going to be nothing but a collection of off the shelf PC parts.

Why is this still going on...

You know he's just trolling, right? Earlier in this thread he gave his actual opinion:

yeah, i saw the problems with the 360 looong before that sucker ever hit the shelves. people told me i was crazy then, and they still call me crazy 8 failed xboxes each and some 2400+$ later, not counting online costs. but it's understandable they'd want to protect their time and money investments, nobody likes to admit they made a bad investment, especially when time is involved. can't get that back, at least not yet.

meanwhile i've had the same 500$ computer for going on 6 years now that thanks to consoles, can run most games on max settings without problems, so I guess I can't complain.

also, notice how this thread is now about consoles and not "why is mwo so hard bla bla bla"? amazing how that works. I wonder If I could find a job subverting forums?

I have recently brought two of my friends into the game, and it appears to me that the biggest hurdle is the lack of a tutorial mode. No matter how many explanatory videos you watch, nothing comes close to being taught the controls of a game by using them - and being thrown into a competitive environment right from the start can be frustrating. I should point out that one of my friends is an older gamer who simply doesn't pick up loads of new game controls as quickly as others (but who is a good player in games he is familiar with.)
Furthermore, there are some annoying inconveniences in the UI; the most egregious example being the inability to configure weapon groups in the MechLab. This made it necessary to talk my friend through the process in-game, which was distracting, inefficienct (because I could not aid him via teamviewer) and of course resulted in him doing nothing productive during the game.
So, yeah, PGI could do a lot to make this friendlier for bloody beginners: Better UI (planned) and a proper tutorial which would not only teach you the basic controls but also how weapons and ECM work.

A drop lobby would be very helpful so that it would remove a large chunk of the population from having to PUG stomp to work on mechs and strategies. It would be great if my House could drop all 18 of us so we can try out some tactics and mechs without having to PUG stomp, but sadly we don't get enough guys typically to stick around for more than 1-2 drops of 8-man before someone has to pick up the kids or grab some food so we end up back on the 4-man which is basically going back and pugging.

ELO has helped this so we aren't stomping on new players anymore, but you still see unorganized groups that get rolled due to group separation.

Another way to help the new players is to give them the first 50 matches with <50 match players ELO and let them beat up on each other in the training arena and then put them into the general populace so at least everyone has an "owned" mech by the time they hit the general PUG populace. Of course this is open to abuse, but it would hook the new players to having some time to adjust before getting smacked with a Cat A1 or a Atlas D-DC in the face.

OMG stop it please.
This suppose to be a sim.
I think.
But anyway ya gots to earn yur chops here pug.
I want a Fozzie Bear Holo PGI.
Fozzie Bear is just plain Cool!

MechWarrior games are a hybrid. They are a SIM and a FPS Mixed as one. It is not a twitch based FPS, it is more of a thinking man's FPS - is the way I would explain it.

The basic outlaying problem is there is no strong tutorial in this game yet. While they are videos, not everyone looks at videos. There is no way to practice either with NPCs. Building confidence is important to a person, many people also like a challenge as well - but if they do not know WHY they are being destroyed then it can be very disheartening.

I love MWO; however, I do want more - which is why I take breaks. Community Warefare or some new way to get people encourage is the way to go - IMHO.

I remember hearing this since Closed Beta. It was even rumored that by 2012 the game would be "live." I do not mind them taking their time - but it seems to be a crawl. Throwing a few mechs and maps is fine - but new types of matches and community warfare beta would be something I want to hear.

MWO should have started off taking place in 3039 or 3025, limit the mechs, give us half-a-year to a year to master standard everything, then bump us up, give us the new toys, at that point, everyone's on the same level.

The problem came in that, PGI wanted to cash in on the invasion of the innersphere by the clans, because no one apparently wants to play just 3025 era. So now, PGI has to impliment all the advanced tech that they could have waited on, and spent a year devloping and debugging and testing instead, then jump us forward to the clan invasion.

The reason everything is unbalanced and unfun, is because of the timeline we're in.

Now we have cool shots, which either cost real life money (pay to win for 1 time super cool) or paid c-bills to decrease the heat. For new players, who does not have enough money to buy upgrades for their mech or a new 'mech then you are asking them to buy cool shots?

Then compare that new player to an older player who has "ALL" or "most" of the battlemechs in the game an excess of 200+ million c-bill. Who can afford the cool shots more?

New Player friendly or not?

I don't really get the point you are making, but to be fair I haven't read beyond the first post yet.

As both a new player (today or tomorrow, I forget which will be day 7 for me) and a casual player (i work 7 days a week so I'm lucky to get an hour or two a day of free time) I'm not having any problems.

I just bought my second mech last night, the hbk 4h, that was a bit over 8 mil for everything. Before that my first was a 4sp brawler that was bought with the cadet bonus money. I also did a refit of it to add artemis to my srm6.s and to add ams.
I didn't have any problems with combat vs all the ems. My combat skills have done nothing but improve. I have lead the leader board in both kills and damage in both wind and loses.

I know that there are modules but I don't know what they are so I can't say if they would make a difference to me our not, so I don't see the issues with them yet.

All in all I'm having a great time playing and mwo is by far the most casual friendly online game I have played in more than 10 years, and f2p to boot.

I'll read through the rest of the thread while I work and see if I can figure out your actual issue.

The cadet bonus is just an extra cash (c-bills) payment you receive at the end of your first 25 matches.

It is just extra money so you don't have too grind out extra cash on the junky trial mechs. Junky in comparison to the custom mechs everybody runs.
This allows you to get acclimated to the gameplay and test out different classes of mechs before you commit to buying one.

There aren't yet any consoles that run nearly as fast as a supercomputer (such as a Cray), so I don't really see how that "is as you said." Also, consoles technically are computers as well in circuitry and many of the same functions, you just can't swap out internal parts (i.e. RAM, video card, etc.) without voiding your warranty.

well you can swap out the hdd......
