I'm not really into the role-play aspect. I'm just into finding a group that's chill to play with (which is what I think really matters for your longevity in this game).

Liao does have some interesting individuals:

From Warrior: Riposte

Quote

Michael closed the book and returned it to the desk drawer. Scanning the stacks of documents on his desk, he quickly selected one showing the local Capellan Ambassador's letterhead. Michael read the text, then stabbed the button on his personal intercom. "Agnes, tell Ambassador Korigyn that I expect him in my audience room in two hours."
His personal secretary hesitated, her fear almost crackling through the speaker. "Forgive me, Your Grace, but the Ambassador is not in the capital right now . . ."

"I don't want you giving me his excuses, Agnes!" he snarled. "If that ***** thinks we're going to increase his embassy's yearly shipment of vodka from the Confederation just so he can sell it on the black market here to keep his mistress, he is sadly mistaken. Two hours, Agnes, or there will be hell to pay."

That triology has a horrible writer bias against House Liao, so we can easily disregard everything in there.

How can Stackpole possibly hate House Liao when he turned Kai Allard-Liao into such a badass?
He had so much fiat that he beat the entire Falcon Guard on his own with just one mech.

Who wants to be a servitor.

Here is a peek @ Capellan Confederation vacation cruises.

or how about some of there military training

All joking aside there is the goon issue & this will have to be decided on individual basis.

They have a checkered history on multiple online games so doing some of your own research may be a good idea.

Search on these key words may help:
goonswarm, goonwaffe, Burn Jita, GoonSwarm Federation, Jita's On Fire, goonfest, Goon recruitment policy enforced, Goonswarm - Recruitment, JihadSwarm, Jihad Swarm, Asakai EVE, Goonion.

Don't forget the fact it is a son of the guy he made destroy half a nation and his bi***** who turned on her whole nation and went to the Davions to quite literally *****************************************.

Okay, this is mostly in-character, but really, you can't possibly take him as Liao as he was raised by Davions and fought for them all the time. There was not once an instance where he actually did help Confederation a single bit.

Stackpole's quote to me, (his penned comment in my Warrior: Ripose book):

"Sorry about the Liao's knock on the chin. -NOT!"

Yeah, so ... there.

Just another example of the lack of education so common in the Federated Suns. So let me help you out:

Communication is key

This is an untruth. A falsehood. A dirty lie!

I tried to engage the lock of my front door in conversation to get in because I had left my keys at work. It remained locked! Communication is not key. A _key_ is key.

You are not communicating enough. You must communicate more and more.

Whoa.

If it weren't for SQUAWK/ECM/MG/CHILLIN/MECHBROS/KEYCOMMUNICATION/FLAMERS=OP, I'd probably have to rethink all my life choices... Who am I kidding? I'M ONLY 13! I MAKE NO CHOICES!

My own research concludes that Goons typically exert either a positive net force on a gaming community (EVE, STO, MWO, WoT, et. al), or behave like an insular gaming group who wants as little to do with outsiders as possible (WoW, et.al). Either way, Goons typically make greater positive contributions to the community by finding and reporting bugs/exploits, free stress testing, ridicule bad posters, drawing more players to a game, creating fantastic fan art/fan videos, tools related to making players' lives easier, and much more.

This "checkered history" you speak of is a result of Goons not caring about who's been there the longest or stepping on the toes of people with fragile egos. Skill and dedication are all that matter, or at least that's the way it usually works. I'll admit that we have our internal quibbles and that not every Goon lives up to the ideal of perfection that we strive for, but we're still leagues ahead of most groups in terms of not being terrible.

Really, I don't get the whole "Goons ruin everything" (GOONS RUIN EVERYTHING) view that seems to spread whenever people realize that there are forums members of Something Awful playing a game, or even that people make us into some kind of monolithic hivemind. If you bothered to actually visit forums.somethingawful.com, you'd realize that there are a lot of goons. We have people who play video games, make video games, not care about video games, bake cakes, make jewelry, practice martial arts, do ultra-marathons, mess with other forums users, read books, discuss movies, almost anything you could think of. Something Awful.com is not a hivemind. It is a collective of individuals, who all communicate with each other.

Besides, if you're gonna dump on WoLgoons, you gotta dump on KAOS, Draguuuuuuuuuuuun, [all the various fan-groups dedicated to] Clan Wolf, and every other player group. Principals of impartiality/universality apply here. :colbert:

edit: Also, the second EVE video you linked to fails to mention how BoB were both morons and had a dev on their team who helped them violate the ToS and provided them with extremely rare stuff. Goonswarm, for all its warts and occasional jerk-like behavior, was still leagues ahead of BoB and most other corporations in terms of "not being buttes".

And people view all arabian people as fanatics and terrorists. All Russians as evil machines that want tp take over the world withc machines that run on alcohol. All Americans as fat and relatively stupid people. All Japanese as perverts and so on...

99% of the people you engage have only ever heard of Goons from EvE and there's already enough neativity on the game itself, even more so on a group that has a major say in it.

It's the only way people outside of the known can see you and as such don't want to have anything to do with you.

Yeah, but this knowledge doesn't help me understand why people rely on stereotypes/mis-perceptions.
