Tell you what, if it isn't cheating; post exactly what needs to be added/changed in the config file to let me see farther and better. I want to know how to clear up thermal vision. how to make NV not useless. In fact, why doesn't someone start a new thread with all the changes and instructions on how to make them. Sticky it. Let it be common knowledge to all.
Of course there will still be the players who don't visit the forums and won't see this.

He cleaning up of thermal vision another thing it would seem. It was something i found out from the same source told me of the change of fov also, if was offered as a downloaded file and just modifier some file, but i think like many users we don't feel comfortable playing around thigns we don't understand and would be concerned to ruin the current settings.

So anyway, i just followed the instructions from a post earlier in the thread on how the fov was change and omg, it's super OP.

i could clearly see with 1 lvl zoom out to 1400 metres on the caautic map. It was tough in heat vision due to the ambient heat on that map. normal vision was slighty percuilar to look this way but i was able to get about a 90% hit rate with my Cataphract 1X, 2 ppc's and 2 er large lasers and man it was just sick. the leading was much easier to do than i'd have though possible.

Playing this way to those who played how i played before this game was giving me an quite large advantage using long range shots. In close the side width was yes reduced since i have a single monitor set up and by having a fast torso twist i could just sway my torso from side to side to be wary of flnkers and be aware of the mini map had me only once get a little tunnel vision going for a kill as a hunchback closed in, but by that stage we where up 4 kills to 2 so my teammates attacked it, i finished off the catapult A1 i'd been snipping after taking off it's ears. and with the base 78kms my mech had was able to pull back, change from zzom to normal and help finsh off the hunchback even though i was cored.

Now my ER Large Lasers where highly accurate to the point where i could pinpoint spots on mechs and keep a steady beam going without swaying all over the mechs torso thus allowing me to place the damage tighter and coring a stalker without hitting the side torso's

Now i say how is this not using an advanatge over other players who are

A unaware that files can be changed in the config settings and which and what one each does

B who cares if you say it's as old as the hills, i've played pc's for over 27 years, yes thats means i was one of those blokes who use to load games via a cassette player, there wheren't even floppy dics, but i've never felt the need to use a leg up as i play the game as per how the IN GAME settings allow and play how the devs have made the game to set myself the goal to know i've never used or will use a hack or cheat or something that's gonna allow me to get a leg up over others. Maybe i'm just a decent person and think contests of skill should be equal playing fields.

now before anyone says oh well he's a hypocrite as he uses it now, how do i undo this? just go back into the config file and delete the line i entered?

To undo just delete the line in user.cfg.

I was joking. Poking at the fact I do not touch such things to try to get an advantage.

Back in the early days of open beta, I mucked about in my user config quite a bit - not to gain any particular advantage, but rather because the state of the game at that point rendered frame-rates on my decent, ~2 year-old PC nigh unplayable.

At the time, even with every in-game setting at its lowest slider position, I would consistently read 10 - 20 fps. Though it seems since-patched inefficiencies in the code were to blame, turning down some draw distances, texture resolutions, and lighting/shading/particle effects yielded palpable improvements. At one point, I had trees and other objects popping into existence 10 meters in front of me, and lasers that looked like something from the first mechwarrior game.

With recent patches, though, I only need to use the user config to pull back the fov a bit, so my breath doesn't steam up the windshield.

If I printed my .cfg I would run out of paper.

oh great i downloaded a notepad version that's giving my pc a friggin adware bug. this is why is don't like having to change things around myself and not whats comes in the box itself. as my windows 7 version only had wordpad and it didn't seem to have anything but an empty page, so i used notepad as people said would open it and now this happens.

Dude, your Win7 also comes with Notepad. If you right click your user.cfg you can have Windows open it with that. Wordpad would probably have worked as well as long as the saved file format is still TXT. But I have the strong feeling that you should better not fiddle with any config files what so ever.

I myself removed the film grain and also tried some of the custom configs some time ago. The results were rather good but since then the game changed so I do not think they are used any more. I may look into the FoV parameter, actually thought it stopped working some time ago.

When I have the choice between a game looking like sh*** and making my eyes burn and and a nice, crisp view I can enjoy for hours, what do you think I am going to choose? PGI just needs to put those option into the setting so that everyone can beef up their game. It is worth it.

I use FoV and I tried to fool around with NV but its brightness can't be fixed. On really dark maps structures are permeated with reflective surfaces to create a soft 'ambient light' without using vision modes. This turns buildings into lightbulbs if you use NV. I set the brightness level to minimum but it's still blinding.

I think a lot of people don't want to fiddle with config files like myself. I also think a lot of people shouldn't touch a welder as they think they know what there doing but more than likely what they make will break in time, just like me fiddling with files on a pc :D

also when i click to open the config file notepad wasn't an open, i'm not that stupid to to be able to read the list of programmes and see it wasn't on there and wordpad was. So taking someone else instructions i sort out the programme they stated.

If i told you you had to preheat 880 grade steel a certain tempature before welding and then used a cooling pad or the weld would crack under stress and your wasting rather valueable material would you do it or just say you know better?

I remember patch notes right before they turned on b-Betty. It seemed like they encouraged and said to turn her on use the user.cfg.

This thread prob would have made a good poll so the devs and players could get a idea of who messes with the user.cfg.

Cause if you got 80% of folks messing with user.cfg......might as well put the entire user.cfg in settings.

Can put it under THE MECHOROUS ADVANCED button of DEATH. (something that will scare noobs)

Anyone got a better set of textures and poly-meshes? Just to improve the immersion of course.

I use the config file to change mouse sensitivity so that my joystick that is acting as the mouse, is usable (still not as accurate as a mouse, but I can play reasonably).

Why do people think they have a God-given right be told how to make life easier? How do you think the people that edit their configs learnt to do it? Oh, they looked something up online and spent effort doing this THE SAME WAY SOMEONE WHO RESEARCHES THEIR MECH BUILDS HAS AN ADVANTAGE OVER SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T. Cry less, play more...

Get over yourself and remove your head from your *** you pompous ******* *****. If you were given just a helmet and a jersey to put on over regular clothes and put on a team with the same, and you had to face a team with full pads, helmet, cleats, etc. you would certainly cry foul. Most people that play don't even bother coming to the forums. They don't even know that the user.cfg file even exists. This is a game and it is far from unreasonable to ask for an even playing field.

Knowing config changes, min/max builds, ECM, etc. These are things that need to be addressed. There are far more casual players out there than there are hard core players. All these things do is cater to the hard core players and what do they do? They stomp on the casuals where the casuals don't enjoy the game and quit. These are also people who don't give a crap about immersion, or canon, or anything of that sort. They only care about e-peen stroking and winning at any cost. Then when something new comes along, they show a complete lack of loyalty as they move on to the next FPS game and repeat the cycle.

PGI would do very well to listen to those who have read all the books, played all the games, have played TT, etc. Not these FPS fanboys. Hate to burst your bubble...no that's not true, I love to burst your bubble but just because you play first person shooters doesn't put you above the rest of the gaming community. You're as much a gamer geek as someone who plays WoW.

Hades: if Windows can't figure out what to open a file with, right-click mouse over "Open with" and click "Choose default program" and if you can't see the program you want click "Other programs" and it should be in there, in this instance Notepad/Wordpad is fine.

On topic: I've altered my FoV because it looks so much better (like I'm sitting properly in a seat, not with my face pressed against the windscreen) and I've removed DoF and that film grain rubbish - I used to be short-sighted, I don't really fancy reliving the experience every time I hop on MWO and I'm pretty sure mechwarrior academies in the future have eye exams and vision requirements.

Plus it gives me a headache.

(I don't understand this fascination with blurring distant or out of focus object, if you're not looking at the item in question it will be out of focus anyway because that's how your eyes work naturally.)

I'm sure there are quite a few people like me who are surprised about how controversial this is.

I've never bothered myself (although I may do with this game at least for the mouse sensitivity) but I've always known of the config files as a sort of super-advanced options you can tweak to get the best out of your set-up, pretty much a must for the PC platform especially in a beta. The idea that it is akin to cheating seems strange, I've modified my key-bindings which can give me a huge advantage over players who don't know of that option but I don't consider it cheating. Like modifying the config file it is an option that is available to everyone.

However the devs should probably have put some of the major features - like f.o.v.. mouse sensitivity and draw-distance - in the game options to make them easier to find before hitting open beta and definitely before release.
