It's not about firepower. The only reason the 3M is getting used is to give lights the ECM advantage in the initial scout battle - at least this WAS the reason. Nowadays you'll use them to not put your lights into a disadvantage.
Things will change if either SSRM's get nerfed and collisions find their way back into the game (= baibai Raven, herro Jenner F) or PGI released another ECM capable medium which is able to match (almost) the spead of lights (while having better hardpoints than the 3M).

Bumping this thread - updated with some improved optimizations that I missed and some of the less seen, but still used designs.

CASE is near worthless with gauss. Gauss ammo does not explode. The Gauss rifle itself only explodes for 20 damage. When that damage transfers to the CT it is reduced by half. So worst case you are going to eat 9.5 internal damage to the CT.

It might be near worthless, but it's near costless to add.

Less damage is less damage and that gauss is all but guaranteed to go pop.

Case only helps in a very specific situation. When your Gauss rifle pops and your internals have less then 20 health left. Gauss usually pops before that on an Atlas.

The marginal gain from having Case in those rare situations is less then the benefit of having 0.5 more tons and 1 more slot.

That's a fair point but considering the low cost of adding it (to the PPC & Gauss build too) I'd still rather have it than not. You know, just in CASE. :P

I think there may be something wrong, or a discrepancy between the builds on smurfy, and the game itself. Here's an example:

I'm following the build to the letter, but i don't have enough tonnage. Here's what I have so far:

Armor:
head:18/18
right arm:39/44
left arm:39/44
left leg:40/60
right leg:40/60
center torso front: 59/59
rear:29/29
right torso front: 40/40
rear:20/20
left torso front:40/40
rear:20/20

XL300 engine
Endo steel
DHS

right arm: gauss rifle, 1ton gauss ammo, 1ML
right torso: 1ML
left torso:1ML
left arm: gauss rifle, 1ton gauss ammo

that puts me at 70 tons (maximum i can have), and i still come short 3 tons for the extra gauss ammo, and this isn't the first build where this happens. What could cause this? Or am I just simply missing something?

Quickly inputted it up in my mechlab and it works perfectly. So the problem is on your end. Make sure that you dont have any extra heatsinks in that Engine, and also check that you dont have ammo from past builds lieing around in the mech.

It's actually going to get interesting in the next two weeks. The missile nerf means we might see some new designs played, or the return of some older classics.

I agree, this may be when we see a return to the HBK-4SP for the weapon spread across the torso and the greater reliance on laser damage for brawler teams and more usage of the Cicada-3M for the light war.

The problem with that is now you reduced your alpha 5 points. That 5 damage in competitive field is life and death. Remember competitive builds are all specialized roles not well rounded ones.

It was a common sight in the first Run Hot or Die, but they really fall short of RS and DDC builds.

DDCs have ECM and 3 SRM hardpoints (SRMs were really really powerful until a week ago) - so they are a natural brawler.

RSs have space for large energy weaponry - quad PPCs or quad Large Lasers.

With an Atlas D, you are stuck with something like 4 Medium Lasers (or medium Pulse), and if you try to mix different types of lasers you enter into the "too many weapon groups" danger zone, where your damage output becomes unfocused and wasteful.

It's by no means a bad mech, but other loadouts just do the D's jobs a little better. We'll see if it changes now that missiles are a little weaker.

Compare the D to the D-DC. The D-DC is better than the D in nearly every way. The only thing the D has the advantage on is the ability to carry Tag without sacrificing arm slots. However, you don't see LRMs in RHOD though, because they are weaker vs good players and ECM screws them pretty hard when it is fielded en masse.

AS7-D

That's the best I could come up with, based on the 2LL+2UAC5 build. It probably could be optimized further.. I'll just settle for grinding out the RS for myself for now (already did the DC).
