Also for your consideration, I submit my favorite assault mech:

Stalker 5M
300XL (again!, 62.9 kph)

5x SRM6
3x Large Laser
19 DHS
AMS

It solves problems at ranges from 600 meters all the way down to In My Grill. Optimal kill range is 150 meters, of course, but it does alright on the Alpine map so far.

You wind up fighting with either the lasers or the SRM's, depending on the range. You can use both when needed, with caution.

My 3F Stalker is more flexible (and more durable with the standard engine):

300 standard engine (62.9 kph)
2x ERPPC
2x Large Laser
22 DHS

PPC's are the primary weapon initially, blending with the lasers in the 400-600 meter range. PPC's become secondary (fire sparingly with an eye on the heat scale) and the lasers primary in closer engagments. It's hot, but it's a dry heat.

I like to think my Dragon-1C is pretty well balanced.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...3fb542eb0bc2025

AC10
SRM4
4 ML
XL 325
13 DHS

Doesn't have super long range, but in the 270-450 range I find this build to be great.

If they ever fix the LBX to have both ammo types I would slightly modify it
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9021689b9370bd2
LBX 3/1ton solid/slug ammo
SRM4 1ton
4ML
12 DHS
XL 325
this mech would be better served as a flame as it can hold up better to crits, but once you are at that point you are next to dead anyways.

CN9-D
LBX, 2ML, LRM10
stock engine size (100kph) but standard instead of XL

The stock CN9-D setup works great... shift a few things around, of course, but I've found it a very versatile design.

How, exactly, do you stuff a non-XL 300 engine into a CN9 with that weapons load?

I think this is a pretty well balanced Awesome, a bit on the hot side but good.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...f42420d61b660ed
1ML
2ER PPC
1 LPL
1 SSRM2
1 LRM10
XL 350
17DHS
Endo

The SSRM might be a bit cheese, but it helps when you fight a murder of raven 3Ls. And you can use the PPCs to do damage at any range as well as turn off their silly ECM

try this one, you can of course remove one 15lrm for 10 and add more ammo

also, I recommend chaining of those LRMs so you better control its ammo consumption (i use them only when im sure it will actually hit...range 600-200)

constantly number 1 with this build

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...ad5a1d3e285c2cf

3x 15lrm
2x medium lasers
1x gauss
ecm
57,9 mph
sustained dps / 12.91 firepower 106

enjoy

You'll have to pardon lack of specifics, but here are a good list of my builds, I tend to like the balanced builds.

Dragon (any variant)
AC10 (LBx optional. I like how it feels with the LBx. 1 ton lighter too)
Large laser
LRM 10 (or 2 LRM 5s for one ton saved)

Stalker 3F
4 LRM 5s
6 med lasers.
(laugh as people charge you to avoid your boated LRMs, only to find they aren't boated)
Standard engine only!

Centurian
ERPPC
2 SRM 4s
AMS
Good guard to an LRM based friend. works well in a group.
Run with a Standard engine.

Hunchback 4sp
5 med lasers
2 LRM 5s
Standard engine
good for support and as a mid range fighter. LRMs let you protect your group, as well as choose when to engage. Lasers are for close work. Ideal range, 200-300m.

About what I can add, unless a 4 PPC stalker counts... Good in a team that will keep opponents at range...

Care to re-read what I quoted? The guy specifically said he was running stock weapons with a non-XL 300 engine. With endo, ferro, and minimal ammo, that leaves you with less than 100 armor.

I think you should re-read what you quoted. He specifically said he was running a "stock engine size (100kph)". For a CN9-D that is a 300XL.

Edit: Derp, I can read. Sometimes. I promise.

Founders Atlas

Standard 300
Gauss 3 tons of ammo
AC2 2 tons of ammo
4xMlas
2xSRM6 2 tons of ammo
Max armor with some shaved off the legs.

My favorite assault by far. Group the Gauss and AC2 together and you get a solid punch with great suppression. Really makes pilots duck for cover because they think they are getting nailed by a ballistic boat.

Not completely balanced, and definitely not optimized for 8 man matches.

I present my Stalker 5S. This configuration works on most of the stalker variants as well. Very serviceable. The erppcs won't win a sniper war, but they'll make most people duck back behind cover while you close range, which is sort of the point. If you get stuck in a ridge war though, you're not completely handicapped, and those erppcs will reach out and touch someone on Alpine. Also, no XL so losing a torso won't kill you.

Stalker 5M

4 x ML
3 x SSRM2 /w 300 ammo
2 x LRM10 /w 720 ammo
1 x TAG

BAP
19 Double HS
AMS /w 1000 ammo

Works best in the 180-270m range where all 5 missile hardpoints can be used.

C1 with 300XL, endo, dhs and then:
2 SRM6, 2 PPC and 2 med lasers
It's a beast.

And all that with nearly maxed armour (minus 3 points on each leg), 17 heatsinks and 2 jumpjets, which are quite useful.
