Will there be Explosions?

But seriously, Fuse-plosions are in the TT game if my memory is right (it's been 10 years at least), so I don't see why it would not be in the game as long as you can't kill yourself doing it ; it has to be random (or based on critical hits)

i would enjoy seeing the occasional fusion implosion when someone overkills a ct so hard the reactor cant help but breach.
fission explodes, taking out stuff for miles, fusion implodes, making a mini singularity that collapses in on itself, smaller area is effected, but anything caught in it, is gone for good!

It was an optional rule from a book filled with optional rules and equipment. (Tactics I think?) An optional rule added because some players wanted it, and I recall them stating in it that the reactor was designed to shut down before too much shielding is lost, to prevent explosions. I never cared for the rule, because of people abusing it, purposely destroying their 20-tonner next to a 100-tonner as a way of getting a cheap kill.
Besides, if your mech goes nova, that means you loose your mech, and all the cash you have invested into it. Beat down is repairable, if you go nova, forget about it.

Yes, that will happen. But you have to consider that it will be 100 smurf feet from the center of the fusion reaction in your reactor. So nothing realy happens to the outside world,... or your mech,... or any one else.

For what I recall, fusion engine explosion in TT game fires on if 3 or more engine hits are received by mech in a single turn (which is pretty unlikely, until you have IS XL engine), and a successful roll of 12+ on 2d6, which means 1/36 chance to go boom. Even then damage is calculated based on engine rating, like 4/6 100t assault with VLAR XL 400 engine does only 40 damage to adjacent hexes, 20 next ring of hexes, and so forth effectively halving damage till it reaches 0.
So, by tabletop rules, if, say, Fire moth / dasher, (20 ton, 10/15 => 200 Engine rating), gets hit in center torso with AC/20, while trying to charge an Atlas in the face, IF it got lucky to make engine explosion roll, the damage to that unfortunate Atlas will be just 20 points, spread by 4 groups of 5 points... Which is much less painful, than AC/20 it possesses.
As for the nature of engine explosions, IMO, it's the hot plasma, contained in engine goes free, and evaporates surroundings by high temperature, not an actual nuclear, or thermonuclear blast... Thus, near to no radiation is spread on environment, and the Ares convention remains intact.
edit:
I'm totally in for fusion engine explosions, if you ask. That will give some chargers a task to think of

In Maximum Tech revised edition (didn't even knew I bought that...).
The engine may explode if 2 or more slots are destroyed and you roll 12 on a 2D6 critical roll.
Explosion destroys the unit and everything on the hex, and the adjacent hex takes damage of the engine rating divided by 10 like you said.
You were close Prophet Roshak, your memory is very good

That said, I've always been a fan of the "Super Nova" death throws of Mechs in previous games, but I think it needs to be limited to events such as ammo explosions. My reason for liking the explosions, is it prevents some jerk from just walking into me while firing off fast as he can.

O.O uh, dude, I do not wanna troll ya here, but, you are beyond wrong. Ever hear of things called Nova's, Super Nova's and Hyper Nova's? those are from fusion reactors called Stars. They are beyond a fission explosion. They can reach out across light years and touch us through things like Gamma Ray Bursts, which are a result from a Hyper Nova Explosion.... Just sayin...
