I don't know what screenshots the rest of you were looking at, the ones I saw regarding thermal vision were just some ugly grey scale images that in no way, shape or form mimicked anything even semi resembling thermal vision.

THERMAL VISION THAT ISN'T THERMAL, DOUBLE HEATSINKS THAT AREN'T DOUBLE, FIVE MILLION DOLLARS BABY, WHOOOOOOO!!!!!!

You should probably perform a bit of research and understand how actual, extant, real-world thermal vision functions, and then mimic that.

A video game is not a license to cultivate and expand upon the insane ideas of developers who are only tangentially in touch with reality.

In other words, stop making this game worse -- it's already bad enough given the numerous, glaring issues which have received no attention in what appears to be The Neverending Beta.

The only excuse for not having colored thermal vision is a lack of processing power in the hardware resultant of an intentional design decision to cut costs, or due to technological limitations. What year is it supposed to be again?

Would it be possible to make the two vision modes function more like an overlay on top of normal vision mode? Something like this?

Normal Vision:

Night Vision (Standard):

Night Vision (Overlay):

I like the new nightvision, but the thermal does not impress me..

I personally think thermal should be very easy to see in, but only work effectively from 400-500 meters, maybe by adding in a type of fog effect to the thermal vision sensor that increases around 350 meters, and becomes impenetrable to see through at 500 meters.

Either way, I'll be sticking in for the ride.

night vision still looks like that ugly step child u don't want. thermal looks like a better use every time. the mechs just blend in green, while in thermal they still out gray. since thermal only goes too 700, can we get a clan version that lets use see farther when the clans come:P

we have night vision/thermals already in the 20th century.

eta nevermind misread your post but still leaving the PSQ20s up there because they're pretty cool

Yeah, I've seen this before. Really cool tech. I was going to mention it and decided against; I imagine the goal is to have a number of separate vision modes.

I'm liking both new vision modes. I think both looks more representative of their real world counterparts and still fit the feel and theme of mechwarrior. Awesome.

I like the new modes. Here's a suggestion though. Instead of the modes filling the entire cockpit, how about if they just fill the cockpit window?

For example, here's the normal pic:

Here's the proposed Night Vision pic:

And here's my suggestion:

Posted Image

It's crude, but with some slight green ambient lighting coming off the cockpit canopy into the cockpit itself and it'll look much better than making EVERYTHING night vision.

Same principle for heat vision too, of course.

No, and here is the reason why. "If" they mask off the cockpit area like that it means that the vision modes are controlled by the "Glass" of your cockpit? That just does not make sense as your "glass" would have be LED screens and if that was it then why do we even have cockpit glass at all? Your wearing a neuro-helmets that has a visor that controls the vision modes so whatever vision mode your using is how your going to see "everything" in your cockpit.

You're kind of creating a false dichotomy here, in that either it's glass that can't have any technological properties, or it has to have modern day screen technology. How about some out of the box thinking? Remember in the 2009 Star Trek movie how the bridge viewscreen was both a window and a viewscreen?

What if vision modes are displayed on your canopy, and not from the neuro-helmet visor? Really, it's just going into the technicals of such an implementation, which aren't really that important. If you recall, they said...

...there are essentially three major considerations that we will continue to follow when creating new vision modes, in priority order:

* Game-play
* Visuals
* Accuracy

If my cockpit didn't blend into the vision modes, I could more easily focus on the environment, and it would look less dull.

This is just my opinion, though, and that's all I have to base my suggestion off of.

Thermals need a nerf. It's not suppose to be sniper vision goggles. The ZOOM MODULE is suppose to be that. Night Vision also needs changing because it's currently completely useless. You'd never use Night Vision over Thermals, meaning it may as well not even exist. Thermals need to be less effective on snowy maps until Mechs run up their heat bar, and useless on maps like Caustic. Night Vision needs to be made much better on River City Night; currently you are easily blinded by any light source and out of place reflections that shouldn't exist. Mechs also blend right into the scenery where as Thermal glows them clear as day, even if the Mech is ice cold at 0%.

Really like how the new vision modes look, I felt night vision was almost unusable before (especially when thermal did essentially the same thing + more), and as stated in the article I felt that Thermal was definitely an overpowered mode that made it way too easy to spot mechs farther away. Now maybe it will be harder to snipe with Gauss, ER PPC, PPC, etc. (especially from spawn to spawn in the River City maps) which I feel is a plus. Every update has been a great improvement to the game. Keep up the great work!

Looks great, just hope mech geometry won't get in the way too much (as in reflecting light/heat not being in the line of sight)
I just hope we won't get to see so much motion blur in NV, thermal might make use of it though.

Hope these changes end ER-PPC & Gauss-shots "beyond visual range".

I really like that in our current thermal vision the colours of the mech change as they heat up. I guess they will go out as the new thermal vision is introduced =/

I wonder if the dev knows that thermal camera (at least the sensor part) MUST be kept cold in order for it to work. A very, very general rule of thumb on the physics is that a thermal camera cannot see anything colder than itself.
So an interesting way to balance thermal camera could be that it is a fairly superior mode in large number of circumstances and environment. However, as your mech build up heat, it becomes less effective (the camera starts to lose contrast at the lower end of the scale).

New night vision looks promising, have to see it to believe it though. I didn't like the changes to thermal right away, but now I've had some time to think about it I can see where they are going and it does make sense. Looking forward to the update.

That's nice and all but you forgot one thing. "If" indeed the cockpit windows did work as you describe then why could we not display the view from "anywhere" around our mech? Do you now see the can of worms your opening up? This would lead us right into, "why don't we have 3rd person views?" By making it something controlled by the neuro-helmet visor it makes LOS work.
