I feel bad to be the debbie-downer of this topic but, after reading this guide I just feel even more overwhelmed by MWO. ;)

Reading the guide I felt I only really understood what I already understand from years of experience with games, and what I didn't understand, I didn't understand it because it was something unique to MWO (an example being; how to build a good mech).

Do not feel bad about being overwhelmed - a lot of us do not really remember our introduction to the series that well (I was I think between 10-13 when mechwarrior2 came out...) but I can almost guarantee we were all pretty shell-shocked at one point or another (or even multiple times...)

As for making a good mech, THAT is a very complex topic even within mechwarriors standard complex of complexity... ;)

IE: A lot of people will tell you the only good Centurion9-A is the 2medlas 3srm6 combo - I fare much better with a near-stock loadout (ac5/3lrm5/medlas) and playing it very differently than they do.

The only real answer to building a 'good' mech is playing until you find the way you like to play- (what weapons you like to play with, what mechs you like, what speeds you like... etc etc...) and optimizing that to your own preferences.

Yes there are builds that will far outplay others... in certain circumstances. -The 3srm6 cent will probably tear mine to pieces in a one-on-one fight, but if he catches me in one-on-one, then the game was already lost to me IMO.
Whereas I much prefer maintaining some indirect fire potential,, (2lrm5 weigh less and reload faster than 1lrm10... and somewhere i wound up with the weight for a 3rd, which still weighs less than 1lrm15...) and have found people are far less likely to aim for my crotch (and CT killing me) when I maintain a decent ballistic weapon in my arm, meaning I wind up zombie-ing more often than when I tried the 3srm6 builds.

Which makes the current low income rates all the more painful - cannot tell you how much I spent on XL-engines for my commandos before I found the one that 'fit' .... which has completely changed as they worked on the coding (lag-shielding hurt me far more than it hurt the people targeting me, so I kept my speed below that - now they've fixed a lot of that coding I'm wishing I'd kept some of those bigger engines )

added to all of that, unless you are worried about playing at ABSOLUTE TOP TIER (ie, you are in it for the competition, not the big stompy robots) I would not worry overmuch about mini-maxing your builds - the ELO system works to match you against roughly similarly skilled people, and it doesn't work TO badly at that. (I play with a lot of people who really suck, but then sometimes so do I :D)

TLDR: trial and error is the rule for finding 'good' builds - there are exceptions to every rule of course, but rules are what they are for a reason

Building mechs and evaluating chassis is unique to MWO (makes us mech nerds stay up into the late hours) and is one of the best things about this game.. theorycrafting! It'll come with time. Watch streams - videos - ask questions. You're on the right track after reading Wadde's guide.

It's partly outdated though (some weapon values and especially a couple of the beginners mechs).
Since my time is super limited at the moment and PGI can't hide behind the "It's a beta!" excuse anymore it's probably about time that THEY finally start to do something for THEIR customers.

I've spend more than 300 hours of my UNPAID FREETIME to create this guide in 2 languages (+ Birukes brilliant work by translating it into a 3rd language).

Hi

I was really looking forward to getting stuck into the guide, but RapidShare reports it as missing? Is there another place where I can obtain the guide, even if it is outdated.

Thanks for the hard work Wadde, as well as your time.

Rapidshare seem to have changed a couple things.
The site is now super ugly and...hard to use.
But I've updated the link in the very first post. Should be working now. If not, please get back to me. :D

Hey! Just heard that MechWarrior committed suicide. They have killed it with 3PV. Don't bother with this game. Find something more meaningful to do with your time. Star Citizen actually listens to it's fan base. Are you guys related to Adobe? They're screwing their customer base too.

3PV is a pretty lame option, but from what I've seen its banned in tournaments so there is really no downside to it. People will play how they prefer to play. If anything it opens the game to more people since now those who like 3PV shooters can now use that option instead of being forced into first person.

I think my major problem with it, besides the initial statement that MWO would be first person only, yadda yadda, never forced to play against 3rd person, yadda yadda...
Ok my major problem NOW is that 3rd peson is SO bad it upsets me that time and money went into it AND that new players are forced by default to use it, same with arm-lock and throttle decay.

Happy if I could help out. :D

I won't be able to keep this guide up to date within the upcoming future though.
I've made an appropriate comment/insertion at the very first post of this entire thread.

This game lacks in so many ways, not the least of which has been PGI's utter reliance on it's own users to train it's other new users. I agree with you- as much as I hate to see your guide languish, it's long past time for PGI to get their own **** in a pile.

Smurfy's is another example- without that resource, we'd all be stuffed (or at least I would).

Greeting Gents,

Old school 3025 tabletop player, first time mech warrior. I was hoping you salty war dogs could please help this new lowly recruit out.
1.Where is the actual game? I downloaded it, but there's no battles to be scene.
2. How do I join a faction?
3. Is there a signature banner builder? Or is that on the individual player?
4. How/where/who would I ask to change my name.
5. Pic in profile box.

Thanks a million!

Did you install the game yet? I'm not sure at what stage you are in installing and running the game, can you clarify please?

Profile > Faction (both near top).
At this point this is rather meaningful only for vanity reasons, we have to wait until Community Warfare is released for this to be actually meaningful.

Up to each player.

Great guide. Thank you! It's much needed in a game of this complexity. I hope PGI picks up where you left off.
