Did he really dare to declare how i have to pilot a Atlas?
Oh... although I'm only adressed because i read this. I think the OP has never ever piloted a Atlas. I think I'm good in piloting that little baern. But to become good i reallized that there is on thing not a single battleMech but the light ones are capable of... this taks is TAKING DAMAGE.
A Atlas that charge is dead.
A Atlas that stay allone behind the lines is dead.
As said best position is anchor with a good mix of all ranges.
And its intended role is to be a commander Mech, not brawler, not sniper, not LRM Boat... stay in the middle of the formation... and lead the fire.

1) Kill the Enemy
2) Take his Stuff
After that everything else is icing on the cake.
old proverb;
Young bull to old bull: Lets run down there and get us a cow!
Old bull to young bull: I'll walk down there and get them all instead!

Oh wait when did MWO become a TEAM GAME. Taking hits for the team is tanking, and the DPS mech is that fellow jump-phract that can keep on shooting while you are right in front of him. Are you in a clan/merc/house by any chance? Well if you are, you would understand that if the big mech fights and takes the hits, you will have more time to carefuly split open opponents from the rear. Its all about working together.
At first we had teams bases on weight and competitive play still has that. So equal skill and classes makes for an interesting TEAMWORK oriented game, just like WoW in PVP.
By the way, efficiency is overrated. Unless you can constantly head shot people. It should be the number of hits(damage) given vs the amount of hits(damage) taken. That's what wins matches. And why jump snipers are so feared.

Awesome yes... Stalker is quite something with his small frontal profile.

My Atlas has a top speed of under 70 Kph! If you move faster than that i cannot be your bullet sponge and you will die while I am closing with Gauss and &ER PPC blazing. A large wall of armor only works when you stay behind it! This means You have to slow down. To many times I die to massed fire, because my team of PUGs ran off and leave me alone & unguarded. So if you don't like us big boys not playing our role, Try filling it when the bulk of the team is 50% faster and 700+ M away!
I can't fix stupid.
I'm perfectly happy to stick to an Atlas that moves. An Atlas that stands behind a rock isn't as helpful.
But yes, this is obviously an issue. Perhaps the real problem here is the lack of available in-game voice chat for the team that allows you to co-ordinate the push at the right time. I suppose I should have made mention in the OP that I'm not expecting the Atlas pilots to win the battle alone, but they should usually be the focal point around which the rest of the team fights.

Again Big, well armored, turtle. If things were hot for you I am not getting out of the jam you just ran from. When the big guy comes to save your fragile but, don't just run off!

Well in a game where there are no in-game voice chat and a crapy text chat, and where 90% of pug teams run allover the place.
Sneaking and staying behind(not 500m+) is an atlas best friend, nothing is more punishing than getting ambusehed by an assult..
Yes i have more armor but i am ALOT slower and ALOT bigger target, and if there is alot of LRMs yes i hide...

wonder if House Steiner approves.
I find non atlas pilots who rush ahead to brawl the whole enemy team, separating themselves behind cover, and from support and dying alone or with the 1 or 2 idiots following you.. to be incredibly annoying. When I see you running ahead in your heavy or medium, not caring about waiting for your team to stay together, I know I will either have to carry the team or die trying once you have died foolishly and are sitting there on spectator calling me a noob.
I once got 7 kills in an Atlas - RS support, 2 large laser, 2 LRMs, 4 of which were after everyone else was dead. the other 3 were while supporting team mates... yes Im the noob.

I don't care what your build is, or what you perceive your role to be on the team, as long as you're fulfilling it in the way fits you best. I'll be spending my time making sure that I'm doing my job, not trying to tell someone else how to do theirs.
Oh and for the record, OP.. Assault = Damage, it does not equal Tank. Range is irrelevant.

If there is any mech under heavy fire, ikt should be the mech that can take it.
Of course, if someone else plays idiotic and exposes him self to 60 incoming LRMs with no need, it's pointless.
But what is a bad idea is holding in the back with your Atlas and not dealing damage while the rest of the team is.
TOo often you see mechs- and that is not limited to Atlai - that think they are snipers, but in truth, don't contribute because they are hiding behind a cover that unfortunately works both ways - they are protected, but their enemies don#t care, because they also don't fire.
You need a Line of Effect to the enemy. And it unfortunately often is the same as Line of Sight, that means - if you want to contribute to the fight, you must also accept taking damage. Don't hide when the rest of the team is busy dealing with the enemy.
In fact, even if they stupidly did so - it might be better if you're with them, because if they get all slaughtered, you alone won't carry the team to victory either. If the team goes with a bad plan, you won't get to enact Plan B alone - help them at least improve their chances!

A better plan is... You move as a combined force and keep your fast mediums and lights scouting and harrassing. Present multiple targets to shoot at and make your enemy spread their fire out not focus on one mech.
