I remember back in the day (mechwarrior 2,3,4) me and my brother differed when choosing our piloting style, i preferred the cockpit view as opposed to his outside the mech view. Viewing the gameplay screenshots even though iv seen views from outside the mech none of them seemed to be from a piloting point of view. In mwo will we have a choice of 1st or 3rd person piloting?

Only first-person view. This is answered in the FAQ:

Q. Will you be able to switch from first-person to third-person views?

A. The game is played from the first person. We’re exploring ways to have a third person camera that make sense from a gameplay point of view.

Letting people peek around corners while in full cover generally isn't a good idea. Of course, that's partially what the radar does, but at least you actually need to pay attention to it instead of just focusing entirely on your main screen.

There is also, of course, the in-character question of where is the camera you are looking out of, and why can't the enemy shoot and disable the magic 3rd person camera.

1st person only ... some of my mates are a little put off by this but I think it is just because WoT has spoiled them.

I always played MW4 as 1st person. People will get used to it pretty quickly.

think 1st per view make ppl feel claustrophobic, and not having full control of the suroundings

which in turn will increase tension and super charge the gaming experience.

I heartily approve!

1st person for crying out loud! You want to see behind? use the mfd rear camera. You want to see underneath, use the mfd camera. You want to see above, use the satellite link (not sure if we are going to have it). You want to see how pretty your mech is, check the replay or walk in your mechlab! (hints at the devs ;) ) . Plus it gives having big cockpits some tactical advantage!

It's supposed to be a simulation, so it's only logical that the 1st person view only is available ;)

Third person may be required for precision maneuvering in urban combat zones. Failing that, a joystick-hat style look around from within the cockpit works.

First person for everything else.

My theory regarding any game that has 3rd person camerais that there's a baloon with a camera tied to it, which is tied to yor character

3rd person cameras encourage corner camping which is quit annoying in other games. Games like Ghost Recon or APB for example. Forcing 1st person keeps it even and allows the cockpit to be another layer of depth that can influence they playstyle of a person.

Heres my two cents, and before I start I prefer first person veiw:

The simplest solution is this, visibility limits, In MW4 thrid person was treated as if you had someone hovering over and behind so you could see around, over and some times through obstacles no matter what, needless to say big problem as it encouraged bad gameplay.

For example Fog of War, if I'm on one side of the corner and an enemy mech is on the other, if say neither of us peeks about the corner for Maybe ten seconds we both would visually disappear unless something was sticking around the corner or a third unit does some spotting. The effect is that that spotting units become important and the visibility mode makes no difference as you get no advantage from it.

Now what I havent heard is what part of the mech determines what you can see, ie and I know some of you are gonna groan but WoT for instance requires that you get one of your observation devices around a corner to see something, that could be the driver, but generally is some aspect of the turret or commander's observation devices. Generally you cant see that well unless a signifigant part of the tank is around the corner. For instance if I put a BAP in my mechs arm does that mean that sticking that around a corner allows me to see around it without exposing the centermass of the unit?

just a thought.

Using jump jets without being able to see yer feet will take some getting used to I think!

First person is sacrosanct. The way it should be. It is the whole point of a simulation.

MWO is Forced First Person view. MWO is a 'mech pilot game so this makes sense.

Third Person grants an elevated view of the battle which is a dominating advantage. It is best utilized by 'mechs with jump jets, hiding behind a hill or obstruction, targetting their opponent, then popping up just high enough to clear their line of fire, then dropping back down behind the obstruction before they can be fired upon. It alters the gameplay into this tactic predominating battles and that's not what MechWarrior is about.

I am sure players will still do this tactic in FFP, they just won't have the advantage of seeing over the hill before they are seen.
