The real question is why don't assaults benefit as much from XL engines as lights? Giving players the ability to pinpoint aim at side torsos and scaling up the size of side torsos on assaults really makes those XL engines not as worthwhile as they should be on anything bigger than a medium mech.

100% incorrect.
You can easily sacrifice some tonnage and speed to up the survivability of a light. You can really see this advantage if you can deal damage onto a single location well against a light on light fight and you have the STD while he has the XL.
The reason why they cost so much is because it is considered Lvl 2 tech.

XLs cost a lot because they are higher tech, just plan to buy one that you can recycle in other mechs.. I don't consider lights so I guess you'll need a dedicated one.

You can build a competitive COM-2D, but you will get torn apart by light mechs. The COM-2D was never meant to be fighting against light mechs but instead of hitting targets slower and larger than itself.
Seem to do plenty fine in my COM-2D with 150 STD engine.

but the XL allows you to carry more, if not ****** damage dealing weapons.
the Cat A1 aka splatcat wouldn't be able to carry all those SRMs, if it wasn't the XL.
they do in the end give more advantages than they take away. so price is fine.
edit.
how and why is B.igg.er censored lol

Oh so basically, when SRMs get nerfed all those people who paid extra c-bills or MCs just so they can get a Splatcat are gonna get screwed over.

Good luck in your 110 kph Commando, when my XL300 Trebuchet runs 106 kph. What are you going to do against an enemy with twice the armor, twice the firepower and running at roughly the same speed as you? I'll give you a tip. You will die a quick death.
And 110 Commando vs 150 kph Raven? You won't even see it coming...

if you want to be hell fast or to be huge weapon platform that is in second line then xl is the way to go
as for cost... you can get one and swap it between mechs that need it
the price is fine... deal with it

BTW, I love it when I run into a light in a STD engine. Easy pickings. In my experience, 130kph+ is sort-of the speed threshold, where you become significantly difficult to target and will survive much longer.

I only lose 1 of my 3 weapons when I lose one of my side torsos.
Have a weapon in the LA, RA, and CT. SRM ammo is in two different locations to reduce chance of ammo explosion and if it does happen, I still have some of that ammo left (along with CASE for staying alive).
Still don't see how XL engine is 100% a must for lights (and fast mediums).
