Depends on which one you prefer, I myself prefer the mouse and keyboard but I've played plenty of console games so I have solid aim with analog sticks as well, I haven't actually used a joystick in about 15 years but it should be a viable option.
Judging from the video footage faster mechs will torso twist faster so a mouse might be better for those, however it shouldn't matter much if you're good with a joystick.

My plan is a Hostas but I have a gamepad and also a R.A..T gaming mouse Stealth gaming Keyboard combo to find which works best for me.

If the Hostas works it maybe enough to push me over to adding a set of foot pedals. Once the game is out or I'm in Beta which ever comes first I will be building a full gaming chair out of my old desk chair for this game and WoWP which I was an alpha tester and now a closed beta tester for.

I use to play mechwarrior and heavy gear with a force feedback joystick. It was awesome then, but I think it would be too awkward to use now...at least for me. Plus it's massive!, no place to put it right now.

It all depends what people are skilled with. It's like choosing between a long sword or sword and dagger. They have their pros and their cons. But if one user is simply more skilled then he'll prevail over the other.

Unknown game mechanics are unknown.

Kind of hard to say which method of play is going to be more effective.

Well as I practice with my joystick in MW4, I am getting much better. Although it is still harder to keep the cursor on targets long enough to acquire and keep a lock on... any tips?

Yes. Put the joystick in your left hand, I mean... you're not two handing it right? and put the Mouse in your right. It will feel weird first. Then your brain will wake up, and MechZen begins...

I'm using an ambidextrous 4 button CH Flightstick Pro with my left hand, it cost me 80$ (after shipping) and looks laughably simple when compared to other companies' sticks.
But I wanted an ambistick, a good one, it came highly rated. (Way better than the MadKatz thing I was thinking of getting.) Its tough, CH makes the sticks that go in actual construction equipment. Its very responsive and smooth, belying its simple exterior. When combined with my Razer Naga I have more buttons than I should ever need.

Saitek x52 hotas for me, i need the immersion. Have been using a stick ever since mw2. Living Legends with a stick was pretty tough at first, eventually i got pretty good.

I'm going to try configuring my G13 keypad to work with the game. It kindof has a joystick feel with the toggle and better/easier access to customizable keysets than a standard keyboard. I've not used a 'proper' joystick in a considerably long time.
