Just trying to gauge the community opinion, as I've seen a number of people referring to this game as such.

That's the point. Massive looks different and before comunity warfare is on it will stay very specific.

Agree that it's an MMO, though Diablo and other games fit into that genre as well due to so many players able to play at anytime.

Though due to how... "colorful" or dysfunctional, depending on who you ask in regards to thoughts about the playerbase involved with this game, we're about a hop skip away from being a MMORPG in terms of WoW or TOR.

Really though, it's just an arena shooter for the time being, like Tribes: Ascend, since MMO is a term slung around like RPGs nowadays, where the meaning has been watered down since it's original inception. Like how Zelda is an Adventure RPG, while MWO could be considered an Action RPG due to a sense of progression in the form of the unlocks through exp and GXP grinding.

By definition, it is an MMO...

The letters that follow it are still debatable.

An MMO requires a large group of people to be playing together at the same time in an open world.

Path of Exile is not an MMO due to its instanced nature and small party size.

Planetside 2 is an MMO due to having hundreds of players in the same large area.

If MWO is an MMO with 8v8 deathmatch, then Counterstrike: Source is an MMO with 32v32 zombie mod maps.

I wouldn't call it an mmo, it's more like your playing call of duty multiplayer...without the lobby

Diablo is not "Massively" multiplayer...you can only have 4-8 people in a game at once (depending on which diablo you mean)

Agree about the watering down of "RPG", but by your definition, "RPG" is anything with progression and unlocks, which would include CoD, Battlefield, etc. I wouldn't say these are RPGs.

In fact, anything that doesn't have you playing a specific, named character that interacts with other characters through dialogue and story isn't really a "role-playing" game at all. Having a persistent "account name" does not an RPG make.

I feel it's something important for the development of the game that people understand what it's trying to be.

Yes, as others have said, it is an MMO by definition. The problem is that usually when most people use the term MMO, they are considered to be referring to an MMORPG by default. MMO is shorter and easier, so its the term that's generally used to refer to an MMORPG, and since MOST MMO's fall into the sub-category of MMORPG, it's just the general consensus on what the term means.

So yes, MWO is an MMO. But I would never really call it an MMORPG.

This'll become a MMOG when we all get connected via community warfare. Till then it's a mech simulator.

Is the Massively in Massively Multiplayer Online Game in reference to the number of players playing with each other, or with the total playerbase number?

When CW drops it might turn into one, but as of right now, no. Not even close.

To add to my earlier points, I believe a key feature in the modern MMO is a persistent world.

If this game were like EVE with persistent world-zones, battlefields, and things like Outposts then yes it would be an MMO.

Right now we have an online arena shooter. Even with CW, it will just become an online arena shooter with a leaderboard.

I don't consider World of Tanks to be a proper MMO either. The title is abused these days.

I'd say by the amount of people in one "match/game" at the same time, or else you could easily say call of duty was an MMO because of all the people playing it.
