Second, yes, if you reach dangerous levels of heat your mech will shut down (you can over ride). Too much heat can cause your mech to violently explode.

We have seen game play of overheated, shut down mechs, but none of exploding mechs.
So who knows if you can blow yourself up, but for sure 8 medium lasers will be a tricky heat curve to master if you plan on going alpha all the time.

That's assuming they keep the maximum heat capacity at the TT values.
It is possible that they will change thresholds (perhaps adding a little contribution from additional heat sinks), so firing a single ER PPC will not automatically bring you into yellow territory.
I'm a bit torn on this issue. A system that forces you to stagger your weapons fire sounds reasonable. Because it turns alpha strikes into a calculated risk (if it doesn't kill or cripples your foe, you're sitting duck for X seconds). On the other hand it would change the balance between weapons, but perhaps that even something the devs want.

The hunchback has a variant with 8 medium lasers. It's called a Swayback, and yes we know it's in the game. Thus, there will be mechs with 8 medium lasers. However, 8 medium lasers is no more threatening than anything else due to range and other issues.

It all depends on the amount of heat sinks you have. If you have 15 heat sinks, then popping of an ER PPC won't matter to you, but if you add other weapons then yeah, you're going to suffer for it.
The whole point of the heat system is calculated risk and resource managment.
