I have been thinking of a set of mission rules for PvP that might fit in here quite well. Instead of x vs x, where you go into a mission knowing what you're up against (roughly), I have been envisioning x vs ?.

The topic is a bit of a dead horse but, this ^^^, and any ideas like it. As has been said, pve is harder to make and more expensive. PvP is also a bit more fun (unless your less skilled; hope for a good matchmaker system) since you're not up against dumb AI (you'd think they'd be smarter after all this time). I hardly expect a proper SP campaign (with coop) setting for a few years at any rate, so I'm not holding my breath, but I still hope they add it in one day, ESPECIALLY since role warfare could dramatically increase the replayability of the SP campaigns.

It's why I lean towards MORE objective based, asymmetrical PvP, since it gives us the best of both worlds, and (I'd magine) more easily attainable. The only issue with asymmetrical PvP is that it can't be TOO asymmetrical (or no one would play the lesser side), which does limit the scope of missions PGI could create. Here's hoping they add some in though.

PS: If PvE got added, what if they sold a mission editor for us to play with? Sure that would detract from potential sales PGI would get from selling SP campaigns, but I still think people would pay for AAA quality campaigns from the developer. Player created campaigns aren't usually AAA.

BRILLIANT!

This is what I mean by game progression, not some much a PVE where mobs stand around and wait or a trigger point. but a live action purpose rather than a boxing match with prearranged rules

I think I may have said this before regarding my time spent with MW4...

Hours spent on single player campaign: ~4
Hours spent on multiplayer: 10 years

Well you spent 4 hours on the campaign because the campaign has 4 hours ^^

But serioulsy, i just don't see the need. Storyline can be forwarded with special events where the staff plays "key" characters and we play cannon fodd... erm, support roles. The MW4Mercs storyline itself lends itself to this, since at the end of the campaign its said that "All the credit went to X, but thats just what the history books say".

From the recent PC Gamer interview

So we all pretty much know that they are at least "looking" at a PVE aspect of the game, so I was wondering how best to represent that with out stepping all over the PVP aspect of MWO. One thing that I think would work well is purchasable missions arcs or campaigns.

These can be bought with Cash or Cbills and would come in chapters (like a book) They could be played solo or with a few friends (Mission difficulty ramping up with a group but also paying out more rewards) and would have story elements besides kill everything, they could even have missions where we the player gets out of their Mechs to compleet certain tasks (like leading a small commando group to steal an experimental prototype) this could also bring in more social locations like Bars Hangers Dropship interiors where players can socialize.

I think this would be a huge source of revenue that would benefit the PVP meta game, but one thing that MWO should never stray from is the meta game being PVP. So I like to see what folks think of this and what your own ideas are of what PVE should look like in MWO....I'm pretty sure we are going to see it in some incarnation of PVE, so I think it would be good to revisit the topic.

PvE is fine with me as long as they keep it strictlly separated from PvP with no connection whatsoever other than to tell stories or test Mech designs.

The day they connect some type of reward to PvE that can be used in PvP will be the beginning of the end for MWO.

Not really. I'm thinking "unlockables". As in "Finish this storyline arc before you can use X"

Example: "Finish the MechWarrior Academy before you can pilot a ********* 'mech"

Clans + salvage could easily be pve content. Then after the battle of tukayyid, unlock clans as playable. That would be a great way to introduce the clans.

Honestly, if they included an instant-action feature like in previous MW games where you could set up a scenario to test builds, I'd be happy, since that's what got the most replay value for me in MW2-MW4. But I'm honestly not sure how that would work in conjunction with a persistent, online, PVP-oriented game.

well, i agree to both pro and contra...on the on hand, i´d like to have a way to setup a (mission based) coop bot-game, where i can take a free ride with my company. (having this as a tool for a mechwarrior pen&paper Teamspeak campaign would be a frakkin dream^^)

on the other hand, this would be way apart from the peristant-universe concept... which is basically no problem, if it hasn´t any effect on your XP, money and what else...

I wish this would work as well as it sounds. Unfortunately f2p is designed to attract more casual gamers and doing this would just alienate the players MWO is trying to attract. The problem is,when do these events happen? Morning, afternoon, evening? How many times do you run them and what days? What staff members are available to spend running these events? What time zone do we use for a base?dinner time in NY is mid afternoon in CA.

Not saying its a bad idea. Just that devs in events really only work for random fun stuff.

I'm confused. Why are people freaking out that "having PvE will DESTROY PvP!!!!!1"
Couldn't MWO do what every other game out there does? Namely, have two separate persistent characters: one for PvP and one for PvE.

To take a new release as an example: Ghost Recon Future Soldier. In multiplayer you unlock weapons and weapon attachments by leveling up. In campaign, you unlock weapons and attachments by completing missions and challenges. There is absolutely ZERO overlap between the two.

So there COULD be PvE and PvP at some later date. And all without "destroying" the PvP players' way of life

Some gamers are myopic like that; mention something that they don't agree with and they freak and start claiming that the sky is falling....ignore them or point and laugh..whatever works best for you. But if you notice a very small percentage on this thread is actually against PVE game play.

Not quite. EVE Online did live events with the Incursion expansion, but they dropped that idea because of all that happened during the "monoclegate" (just take my word for it, hehe).

Star Trek Online did, and technically still do live events with their players. One example was when they decided to replace the Earth Spacedock model from an original design to the old canon design (From Star Trek II), and instead of simply doing a magic replacement trick they held an event where the Klingon faction players raided and destroyed the Earth Spacedock, forcing the Federation to "recomission" the old spacedock.

The thing is, the Battletech universe is big and deep, and the guys behind MWO definatly know a thing or two about it hehe.

As to the logistic aspects of live events, its a pre-scheduled event generally on a weekend day. If you can't show up, that's too bad, such is the nature of the thing. But they will definatly make it easier for the most people possible by doing it on the peak hours of the peak day in the week.

I really hope they dont get derailed by PVE. Perhaps a basic proving ground where you get no cbills but can just practice with friends against bots is enough (but think of all the work to program bot AI.) A skirmish ground with no money gained or lost for practice is the most I want to see.

Many people wouldn't call it derailing, they consider it a viable alternative method of playing.....and I would much rather see those people provide income to a game they might not otherwise play just because some purist wants to have his way.

I guess I'm the oposite of Max Grayson, and it seems like most of the posters here. I will probably play this game for a while to support the efforts of PGI, however if it stays a PvP only game I'll leave in boredom eventually. I like to have more of a purpose than ranking on a PvP ladder. And the simulation Idea that some people have will not work for me either. What I do, needs to have lasting effect, especially if I don't get to do the mission over. So if they were to have Co-Op "Historical" missions that I had a chance to get in, that MIGHT be enough.

I will honestly say that I was dissapointed when I found out that MW:O was going to be PvP only.

Of course I'm the one of those guys that plays EvE, only in High Sec, just running missions. Call me a Care Bear or whatever it matters not. However In EvE my mission running effects the rest of the PvP universe not at all. If, in the future they opened up PvE only servers or such they would have a loyal customer of me.

It's just a dream I have.

Probably won't happen. . .

But I can dream. . . ;)

Well I cant say that pve doesnt effect eve pvp..... half my income there comes from haulers

Those are things I would classify as "random fun stuff". Theyvdont have sweeping, world shattering changes associated with them.

I'm not against pre-scheduled events. What I'm against is having an event like the battle of tukkayid thats only up for 1 hour on 1 night and never seen again. Something that big should be accessible to everyone.

I'm not seeing how something that isn't a part of the game is an "elephant in the room". Something like faction balance or merc corp vs. IS House management and contract tools are elephants in the room. The command grid, that we haven't seen any details to discuss yet, is an elephant in the room. Something that isn't a planned feature is not an elephant in the room.

I like to imagine Paul has a row of Urbanmech figurines on his desk and a slingshot handy whenever he is browsing the forums.
