Yah, this is fairly upsetting, even to me. I'm going to wait for an official statement now though. I bet that the storm here has changed some minds.

Well, I hope, at least.

More hats, PGI, more hats!

There is a huge problem with this line of thought. This means that everything is driven by the players. Competition will be player-based, not in-game events. Corporations and groups will be unofficial, off the MWO grid. This comes down to one simple fact: there is nothing that holds a person, or a group, to this game.

So basically, what it becomes is simply what it is now: log in, group up with friends (maybe), pick a 'Mech, blow up 8 (soon to be 12!!!!!) enemies. Rinse and repeat.

Is that what's going to keep people in the game? Heck no. Most the people currently playing now are doing so based on hopes for the future. You kill those hopes, and people look at the present. The present? That's filled with random maps, random allies, random enemies, and what has lately been a 1/4 chance (in my experience) to not have a major HUD bug the moment you start. 'Mechs sliding on hills, getting stuck on crystals, what have you. And yet we stay. Why? Because we are dedicated. Because we see a light at the end of the tunnel. A part of that light involves Community Warfare, yes, but the biggest part is TRUST. And frankly, I can't trust someone who wants me to pay a subscription to get a field in my profile say "ELP" on it.

So then we're forced to compare the current MWO to other games, and ask ourselves: if we have to do everything ourselves, in fact have to go out of our way to avoid systems put in place by those in charge (be this IGP or PGI) to achieve the above, do we want to play MWO as it is now, or do we want to play something else? I love Battletech and Mechwarrior as much as the next guy, but to be honest, chances are MWO is going to fall very short there.

Also, I forget the name, but whoever is claiming WoT does this with premium accounts, get your facts straight. It uses a fee of premium money to create a clan and requires X amount of people with Y amount of progress in the game in order for you to participate in clan wars. Trust me, I know, I made a group way back in the day there. I didn't have premium either. The nice thing about WoT though? You could earn all that gold you spent making the group back in the clan wars.

well said ELP well said. hoofshakes*

I get where the one time fee is coming from - we really don't wand a zillion stupid "guilds" with even dumber names just because johnny 10-year-old thought it would be cool to lead his own guild called "assasin creed",

But only allowing premium-time players, what the Jesus f****cking Christ? No. Just no. That's even dumber than 3rd person - I get that PGI want serious people in it, but come on! That's what the setup fee is for.

Maybe add some merc points, to get the corps to "run the books", but not for human monies.
Whoever dreamed up that bullcrap, I gotta quote Carlin here: eff him. eff him in the butt with a big rubber one, then break it off and beat him to death with the rest of it.

Why not simply have a minimum amount of people to join a Merc Corp in the game for it to turn 'official'. Seems like that would fix all the problems PGI has apparently talked about. Making people pay to be part of a group and, for example, have the Equestria Royal Guard logo on their 'Mechs with a little EQRG tag is more than what most people in a gaming community are willing to invest.

But as I have said before, we really must wait for an official announcement. Stay strong my brothers.

Ps. My face when the floodgates released on this article.

Lulz,

I just realized that this is exactly what the White House does. They make some comment on a Friday when they think nobody is paying attention, and if it does get caught, then they have the long weekend for it to blow over.

Bravo

Because I read this article, I will now NOT be purchasing the hero mech Highlander. In fact, I'm never putting money in this game again until that statement is retracted. NO FRACKING WAY am I paying 120/year to play in a merc corp. I played MW4 Mercs for 6-7 years. If you think I'm putting down the better part of a grand to play this game for that same lifespan, you're either crazy or stupid.

You and me both, my friend. I've defended them constantly. Ask Protection how many times I told him to shut up, PGI/IGP aren't THAT bad. Sure, they "changed their positions" on numerous things, outright contradicting previous statements. Sure, they've fumbled up PR, take forever to fix simple bugs, don't seem to be quite in touch with the player base in terms of balance... but it's not THAT bad.

I'm running out of excuses here.

and the dynamite goes boom.

did we not see this coming? when they tried to slip P2W on us. did we not expect more.
They did say the p2w consumable thing was a misunderstanding... And they did remove the founder's Jenner from the ECM lineup... So far the OP/p2w Ilya Muramets with the 3 UAC/5 isn't p2w, after all, since the jäger can mount 4 of them... And the removal of R&R make premium layers no better able to drop with expensive tech than free players.

I just hope we can come out of this premium merc thing well in the end.

If i have to pay any kind of subscription, whether that's in the guise of having to buy premium time, or having to pay some other up-keep to play the game (i.e with a merc corp, or to participate in CW) then i'd rather go back to an actual subscription based MMO and leave this game be.

You guys really need to stop dropping these badly worded bombs on us and then complaining that we make a huge fuss based on misinformation, or more often, no information. If you don't want that sort of reaction, stop doing bad interviews or forum posts which hint at stuff and take the time to explain it. Don't make out like our lack of informed opinion on these matters is our fault.

Battered housewife man. It's like a bi-weekly thing now with PGI.

PGI hits us. PGI brushes it off as a misunderstanding or an accident (often with a bait and switch, shoving a ****** deal down our throats by getting us to reject an even shittier idea first) PGI tries to win us back with flowers and double EXP weekend. We forgive PGI. Two weeks later, PGI hits us again. The Pain - when will it stop.

They knew this information was coming out. You couldnt wrangle two people and prepare them to spend a little time dicussing this on the forums?

You are telling me none of you guys has a tablet and you can't make a few posts while sitting at home or something?

Jesus.

This is a pretty good response to the "but wait 3-5 days for a developer to respond" argument.

If the developers had, in any way, at any point communicated their ideas to us - you know, like actual game developers - rather than dropping a bomb at the last minute of a press conference and then disappearing, you deserve the riot on your hands for having such terrible terrible relations with you most core supporters.

PGI cannot keep saying one terrible idea after another, and then try to brush it off as a "whoopsie," or "I misspoke" or "That was our position at the time."

That's the sort of **** cult leaders do.

Except cult leaders have the decency not to charge their followers microtransactions.

Hi PGI. I love this game. So I'll say this now:

No. Will not pay.

Fee to setup a corp is alright. Subscribe to play in said corp is not okay.

I'm confused. Is this game free to play or subscription? (rhetorical).

Heads up PGI/IGP. Community Warfare IS your game, to monetize it as an "optional feature" isn't going to fly very far. It's what a significant portion of your "beta testers" are waiting for...without it, many will leave. I will, not out of any moral or ethical nonsense, but simply because I quickly get bored with straight deathmatch games with no overarching incentive or persistence.

To be honest I prefer subscription games over F2P and you guys have been a great example as to why...you start throwing out ******** ways to get my money for stupid things, like paint and skins and bobble heads. I don't mind, if I don't want to pay for them I don't have to. Now you're suggesting I pay for the game (keep in mind CW IS your game) and pay your already ridiculous prices for skins and mechs. Good luck with that.

So basically, make up your damn mind. F2P or subscription. I'll play either way, but I won't pay for a subscription AND pay for individual monetized content.

The idea behind charging for a Merc Corp would work if it cost them something to keep them up. I don't think the server space to keep them alive would cost more than a few pennies. This one of the most basic money grabs in the industry. The only thing worse is blatant paying to be more effective on the game.

Well if you consider custom logo use by merc corps there would probably need to be some sort of approval process which would take some time and money to have someone approve or reject submitted logos. This is what I suspect would be the real reason for a setup fee.

I just wish they would make it easier to even know these things. I keep hearing of people in Merc groups. I have no idea how to really join one or how the game actually lets people play together. Can you use a head sets with that option? I s'pose you could call me a NOOB, probably just illiterate though since I've been playing since Beta started......and Battletech for oh, 20 years. Im pretty cheap, too. Spent $30 so far on this game. I have one ELITE hunchback, and getting close to an ELITE Cataphract, one crap ATLAS bought on those trial by fire mechs and custom paint on all my mechs, and a Jenner built before ECM came out.

Anyway. Make the benefits more obvious for us. Bioshock 3 just came out and this game is going wayside for awhile. I hope it's a little better when I come back.
