Here's the thing.

For this game to be really successful (no matter how you define successful) it needs a community. The single most important thing to have is a way for people to play together. We don't really have that now, and it hurts the game a lot. I understand that it's simply a matter of features not yet implemented, but that's pretty much the most important thing everyone is looking forward to.

Forcing a subscription to play together, though, creates a barrier to entry for new players who want to play with their friends. The whole angle of a Free To Play game is to bring in as many people as possible, then entice them with microtransactions. You, however, need to get them into the game first.

Using Playing Together In A Clan/Group/Corporation/Whatever as a "premium" feature is a really bad idea. Let people join together for free (less a corp setup fee, which is perfectly reasonable and expected by practically everyone) - once those people are playing together, and what's more doing so with a real goal (see: Community Warfare) - they're FAR more likely to drop cash.

Those players, playing with their friends and having fun, will very often buy Premium Time anyways, simply because it's absolutely worth it. Those who don't will still spend money on other things - colors, patterns, hero mechs, etc.

But if you put that barrier to entry up, making people pay to play with their friends... You'll cause people to turn away before they can get hooked.

It's all about when you grab for their wallet! In a free to play game, you need to wait, to bide your time, until the fools are distracted by your shinies!

Mind you, I bet this distracts people from the 3rd Person View issue.

A number of purely unsubstantiated rumours, as well as my previous experiences with Paul and Garth and some of the other developers during closed beta would strongly suggest that this is coming from the business end - and that at least some of the developer never wanted it to happen this way.

Solid presentable proof, I have nothing. But this is the sort of ****-up that - no matter where in the company this happened - really ought to ripple up the command structure and shake the guys at the top - Ekman and *******.

Trust in PGI is all but destroyed. We are watching Mechwarrior: Online explode before our eyes as some of the most prominent, well liked, and well known players and supporters - Steel Brothers, mwhighlander, Khell, etc - abandon ship. PGI needs a clear change in direction to repair the shattered consumer confidence, and that starts with Ekman and *******.

If PGI makes merc corps and player controlled units pay to play it will be the end of this game.

I'll uninstall it, curse the name of PGI and never look back until the next iteration of Mechwarrior comes along.

I'm also surprised that the board edits out the word for an illegitimate child... I mean, I think I heard it on Sesame Street the other morning.

When that time comes I'm either going to spend $80 on a finished game, or I'm going to pretend this game never happened and wait another 8-10 years for the next mechwarrior game to be made.

This is what I fear the most. I so, so very badly want a good, modern MechWarrior title to play. I want to throw myself into battle in my Dragon or my Atlas, and play shooty robots with my friends. I never got to play MW4, unfortunately, so MW3 was the last title I played and that was YEARS ago. Hearing about this excited me so much that I signed up for the beta immediately. When it was announced to be F2P, I was enthralled and saved up for the next month to drop 120$ on the game so that PGI could finish this game with the vision they portrayed. The past few updates and announcements, I've watched that hope, that glimmer of light slowly slip into the yawning darkness of the crevasse known as greed.

It's disheartening, and it's disappointing, and it pains me to say it for all the want in the world that I have to play this game, but I refuse to support PGI if this ends up being their plan for CW. I won't do it.

Actually, the discussion about burnt food offerings was back at page, what, like 16 or something like that. Once again, the idea outlined in the article says you can play in house units for free (with or without friends) , as a lone wolf for free, or need to have a premium account to play as a merc. I am not defending anything or confirming the accuracy of anything, but I want to make sure we're at least on the same page... Something that I goofed up on royally earlier in the thread.

Honestly, if they want to make a constant cost to running a merc corp, why not just do the sensible thing and make it require a monthly C-bill cost?

I don't think I'd disagree with a one-time MC fee either, but if they want to stop dummy accounts or one-man groups or anything like that, then why not just institute some sort of request form where several people have to come together?

File that under "duh." Either PGI is the greediest, least trustworthy company on the planet or they're being forced to do everything they said they wouldn't. You could tell this was going on during the coolant and third person disasters, but nobody wanted to listen when I said that. Even so, they should still be held accountable for collaborating.

PGI reaaaaally needs to hire a PR team who doesn't consider ******* off the community part of their job description.
