Bryan E's Interview With Mmo Attack @ Gdc (Not The Polygon Interview!)

The rage was justified THIS time. At least as far as the insane monetization Russ may or " may not" have been talking about. And there have been a handful of other times (ecm, lrms that have GPS, coolantgate, etc), but what justified nerd rage has fueled the venom the other 360 days of the year since in inception?
Aside from unrealistc moron demands from people who have never written a line of code or actually worked in the industry, but think playing video games 24/7 makes them experts, half truths (DNF), unsubstantiated rumors (still waiting for some links to proof they took the founders money and spent it on other games, and a bijge with strippers) and at times, pretty much outright lies.
There is plenty they have screwed up on, and plenty they have done right. But if they actually tried to respond to every chicken little fever dream, uninformed rant, delusion of grandeur and pissy entitlement rant (of which I would project maybe 1 "issue" out of 100 has any merit, and most are answered in the bloody Roadmaps, or even resolve themselves in the next patch) they would achieve paralysis by analysis, or worse, compromise so much trying to please every one, nothing would get done at all, or what did would be a bloody godawful mess like thebafore referenced DNF.
When ther is an issue, and especially when for whatever reason, it is poorly handled, they deserve the flak they get. But when they do something right, it would be nice if the community could recognize it instead of people suddenly becoming "apologists", "fanbois" and "arsekissers".
If they full on try to monetize CW, they deserve to have these forum filled with hellfire. But the truth seems to be many people in these forums are only happy when they are complaining. I've nlbeen listening the "this is going to kill MWO" since June 2012, and "if PGI goes THIS, I'm leaving". And yet here MWO still is (and looking to hire 50 more people apparently), and almost all the people complaining, are still here. Maybe if folks cried wolf a little less, the Devs would be more inclined to listen when there actually IS a problem.

Yes almost as childish as continued temper tantrums, name calling, Jr high school clique lemming mentalities and such......
Or complete inability to admit when wrong, continued constant overreactions......
Because when two conflicting reports are laid out, one essentially refuting the other, it is of course, naive to wait for further information before taking out the lynch mob. They officially announce monetization, THEN you break out the torches and pitchforks. Like with coolant gate, and lo behold, compromise is made.
Of course, our society seems to have lost the ability to understand the concept.

Which is of course, why the torches and pitchforks came out. So that's wonderful that we got a nice picture of where CW is headed, but not one single word about the cost(if any) for the player.
EDIT: Yea not one word about the costs for the player. Issue still exists, will we be forced to pay or have a premium account to be in a mercenary company? Because Let's face it, the other stuff is just fluff. Anyone who actually wants to play competitively wants to hold worlds, and get rich because of those holdings. But if i have to pay to play that way...might as well just go play WoT. They let you play for free at any level.
Also....if CW is just a glorified game of risk...i will be severely disappointed. I want a campaign to take worlds! Give me Dynamic Strategic Objectives or go home! I want to be able to send a scout lance to the enemy LZ, or scout a mech works to see if my unit want's to take it. Or send an advance lance of snipers, or.....so many things.
Bottom line....like someone else said early in this thread. If CW is just some more numbers at the EOR screen, i will not be excited.

SO MANY MORE QUESTIONS!!!
also insert worries about population segmentation here
From what the video suggests as well as previous videos, Mercs will declare allegiance for a house. Their successes will be a factor for how much influence that house has on the warfront.
I'm pretty sure Mercs will be able to drop in PUG matches and earn rewards just as they do now. Its just when they are in one of these fronts, their victories will be attributed to the house their unit is assigned.
As for controlling planets and the like, I'm not sure even PGI knows that yet. It seems they're still working on what is plausible and the like. Thats the part we'll need to wait to see.
The important thing is, it seems the pay to play portion is as I've said before, just for those non-canon units that wish to make a name for themselves and put that name on something that they've fought for. In addition get other bonuses for keeping said territories/resources and fight other mercs for them.
For those of you wishing to fight for the 10th Lyran Guards or 12th Legion of Vega, and summarily take territory for the glory of the Archon or Coordinator, you won't need to spend a dime.

I Liked what I heard.
The choice of Merc unit for the word to describe player run units is an example of the PR things they mess up. Both lone wolves and faction players are considered solo or maybe small informal groups of friends seems to be the thoughts PGI has, and that makes sense if we think about it.
The Merc Unit simply means formal player groups, clans, units, guilds, gaming companies what have you. Which logically are the only 'class of Player' that can take advantage of selecting specific resources and planets to fight over. The solo players and 2 to 4 man groups can't even decide who to follow in a drop most times let alone decide who will make the grand strategy for their Faction, Hence the Fronts.
The Fronts seem to be rather abstract areas that will probably allow a selection of games modes and the full range of maps. these Fronts could then be set up to allow more than a simple pairing of two Factions, The FRR/Clan front could be set for FRR/Kurtian/Steiner/clammers faction players, who they would end up matching against and be teamed up with could be easily changed by the meta game and the devs. The rewards for front control can vary from front to front, there can certainly be multiple fronts for each faction.
Merc units through out history have often been rewarded with the riches or resources of the area they take or control for their paymasters, it is then called a TAX, and is simply collected by the said Merc unit on behalf of the great houses. That is just how the real Universe operates.

I would like to come back to the game when pgi un-***** their code and the game is playable again?
...
Edit: not to mention that I have friends that play this and I sure would love to be able to come back to this game when its finally not crashing constantly and enjoy playing the main draw for the game in the first place.
They fixed the stability problems a while back... what are you going on about?
At this point the issue is with features and content - the platform itself is stable.

He mentioned the one time set up fee and that merc corps are going to be fighting for resources on the planets they take.

I was raging against the community-splitting plan for CW for a while now (see link in signature). Also hate the idea of reversing the importance of factions vs mercs in terms of depth of game play. More or less resigned now to the "mwomercs" part of mwomercs.com.
I was always hoping for a reboot of MPBT/MPBT 3025, kind of sad that it probably will never happen.

EDIT:Did you even watch the video? Iv'e watched it 3 times now, the last one i was just listening. And yep, ZERO mention of any costs.

Where is the imagination? Where is the dynamic planet campaigning/capping? Mercs only units that can take planets? Lone Wolf players can't really participate? House units are 2nd class citizens that have no impact whatsoever?
This sounds to me like every other announcement they've made concerning their game so far: lackluster and devoid of any originality.
CW is gonna suck.
PS, the rage over the other interview was completely justified considering PGI's history of bullshitzing, lieing, slime-bagginess, and general deuchebaggery.

2, It comes out its not exactly like that, and the real design wont be half as bad.
3, Everyone starts calling the ragers from point 1 names because they were wrong, and got riled up over nothing/incorrect info.
Whats funny: They raged about their current info, and knew everything about the full version. So why are you giving them trouble for it? Nobody knew it wasn't the complete design!
Had to get this out, thanks.
Because flaming out over stupid **** makes you look stupid, plus it was made pretty obvious very quickly that they didnt have all the information and they still carried on sperging out like a bunch of spoiled little babies. Honestly I have zero sympathy for anyone willing to fling that much vitriol at someone without making damn sure they deserve it first.

Everyone is filled with rage and disgruntlement at a small snippet that may or may not have been misinterpreted or what have you, I figured I'd draw attention to it.
I, for one, am chock full off Squee at the contents of this interview:
Lone Wolf gameplay: Exists for those who just want to drop and play, and don't care about CW or the Larger Story.
Faction gameplay: For the roleplayer sorts, who want to be a part of something larger, but don't want the hassle/responsibility of being a part of a large autonomous guild of players.
Merc gameplay: For the player who wants to be a part of a large guild of players, to be a part of something entirely player driven, who want direct control of their destiny.
This sounds downright awesome to me. I'd love to do the "Merc Gameplay" style of play, but generally speaking just can't devote the time necessary to do so; scheduled events are out for me. But on the other hand, I want more than the aimless drop-and-fight we have now. I want a purpose! So it looks like Faction gameplay will be the way to go for me, unless I happen across a Merc guild that can work for me.
All in all, the interview sounded pretty damn promising.
So, a /hattip to our developers, and while I'm sure this will be lost in the Open Forum Warfare, I for one am even more excited for Community Warfare than I was before this whole kerfluffle.

I posted a separate thread for this - but figured I'd post here as well:
If anyone is interested, Russ had an interview with MMO Attack @ GDC which is now posted. Just a broad overview, the meat is in Bryan's interview. But figured I'd post anyway
The content (for the lazy) -
-Beginning (first 6 minutes) is a retrospective on what they've done since going Open Beta last year
-monthly mech updates, monthly hero mechs, new map every few months
-The complexity of the mechlab/mechbuilding rules, and how they made it user friendly over the past few months with tool tips, information display, rule checking
-They added in mech color customization and cockpit customization
-Testing grounds and new player improvements (throttle changes, torso/arm aiming changes)
---
Roadmap to launch (@6 minutes):
-launch is late summer
-huge list of features to be added, but 3 main ones
-Going 12 v 12
-UI 2.0 - focused on new players getting needed information, breadcrumbs to earn new battlemech, etc
-Community Warfare - create merc corp, go lone warrior, or join faction
-CW will allow you to change control of planets in Inner Sphere via battles
-Bryan's interview (already posted) will go into detail on CW

Nowhere in either of these videos is the subject of cost to the player addressed. Nowhere....

Of course it doesn't bother them. There are extremists at work here. One extreme screams 'bloody murder!!!' at the drop of the hat with no proof, and the other uses interviews that provide no proof to scream 'bloody imbeciles!!!' at the other group.
And meanwhile, nothing has changed, merc pay wall is still coming, we still have coolant flush, and 3pv, and **** maps, and now apparently, CW is gonna be a complete steaming pile of crap.

Might I add that these videos were not made or released as a response to anything that has transpired in the last 3 days... ya it's only been 3 days... but hey, start the trash compactor up, and make room for more baseless, underinformed speculation and rage.
