Something someone else said in another thread comes to mind though, that might change my opinion:
Namely, if the assaults really are the most expensive, as in canon, it would make sense to take that one as your free starter, simply for budget reasons. I wouldn't know if I'm gonna use it, maybe I will, and it'd be hard to get a new one if it's that expensive.
OR if I tried it out and don't like it, I can sell it and buy a smaller one for the price, heck, maybe even tune it.
If you chose a light mech first though, and after trying it out, start to notice you don't like that playstyle at all however, you won't have that opportunity: Selling it would give you much less than any of the other, possibly not enough to even buy a new medium or heavy or assault, and even if, possibly leaving you with not enough C-bills to tune anything to your liking. So you'll be stuck until you made enough c-bills in the chassis type you hate until you can get one you like.
I don't yet have an idea for the devs how to fix that though....
Good points - I hadn't even thought that far ahead yet...
With the C-bill/exp bonus of the founders mech, it *might* be easier to get into a different mech... With the attention *all* assault mechs are going to be receiving on the battlefield, maybe not. Have to wait and see.
If I don't get into beta before we have to decide, I probably *will* pick the Assault Mech to start with...

I am not sure if I have the qualities to become a good enough pilot to earn enough to repair my mech (I guess).
A light mech requires less repairing and will give me a good feel / knowlegde of the battlefield.
So with a light mech I can affort more errors and still keep my bankaccount positive.
Then accumulate experience and prepare me for the bigger mechs.
(looking at the Fafnir with 2 heavy Gaus rifles....drooling)

Thing is it can take the beating. Your light mech will be far from impossible to hit most likely. If I have a buddy fighting you he should be able to hit you and I should be able to rain down enough LRMs to turn you into buttered toast. Of course it all depends on the game physics but a well coordinated team can waste a scout without a plan. So either choice seems effective to me, but this will come down to tactics.

There should be a monetary reason. I mean if you have to repair more mech you would be paying more in theory. Though if you make the same cbills either way I could see them wanting to make sure you could at least mostly repair your assault. It would be interesting if there were occasions were you couldn't fully repair it at the time but making cbills to spend elsewhere should take longer to accumulate if you're taking hits using bigger toys.

This was kind of my thinking. Maybe not with a stock-build of the two Assaults we've seen so far, but it should be easy to tweak them into being a strong support-fire platform. Couple that to some Command role skills they've mentioned (drones, air strikes, etc) and the over-all survivability edge that comes from all that f'ing armor... well, I'm thinking every well-balanced side should have at least one Assault now. Though, perhaps the term "assault" should be better replaced with "support".

The Assaults I would pilot are the Victor, Zeus, Battlemaster and maybe the Devastater. If any of those are available on release I spring some cash to play them, but the Awesome and the Atlas are mechs that never really appealed to me.
(I Suspect that the Awesome is going to be one of the more popular mechs in the game, it has traditional been a TT fav)
