Tempted to get the Heavy Metal... wondering if I'd make good use of it though. I might want to wait until they release the Highlander and see if I can build this sucker here without having to buy an actual hero mech.

P.S.: Do you think I'm carrying too much AC/5 ammo? From what I'm seeing in your builds, I just might be a little crazy on that part!

This is what I've been running. I get a lot of use out of that LRM15, and haven't ran out of ammo yet.

The SRM2 and triple med lasers are all grouped up, as well as the machine gun. The MG keeps firing while the rest are cycling, and I use it as a "tracer" of sorts to land my gauss rounds on target.

I had the SRM6 in there, but as I kept the mouse down with my lasers, it always seemed to fire right after the target moved, etc.

The SSRM2 solves that with tracking / not firing without lock.

I downgraded my 3 medium pulse lasers to standards, which let me add the 4th JJ and another double heat sink.

I think this build is finally maximized, at least for me.

You could probably go down to 4 tons (and stuff it in your legs and save another .5tons of CASE). I run 2x AC/5s with 4tons ammo and rarely run out.

[edit] Try this out for size

You know I am not sure why all the XL hate on the Heavy Metal. I run the stock XL with it and I am finding that it is very, very rare for me to die to a Right or Left torso hit, in fact I would go as far as saying 90% plus of my deaths are due to center torso only kills.

For my build I run 16 DHS, 1 Gauss, 30 rounds ammo, 3 Lg Lasers, a LRM10 w/Artemis, 1 ton of LRM ammo and 3 JJs. I know LRMs are out of Fashion at the moment, but I have gotten so many kills from LRMs it isn't funny so I have a hard time giving them up. If I don't run LRMs, I run 2 Streaks instead.

As far as the Jump Jets are concerned, I have mixed feeling about them. For the most part I find myself only very occassionally using them. However, when I do use them I am damn glad I have them so I keep waviering between mounting them and dropping them. I know alot of people say if your not going to mount Jump Jets, you might as well have an Atlas but to be honest, I find the Highlander to be a superior mech to the Altas even without Jump Jets.

The key is the arm mounted weaponry, specifically the ability to move the Gauss out to the arms and having all three energy mounts in the other arm. This to me is a huge benefit as it makes it much easier to target and engage the enemy. Also having 3 energy mounts in one arm means it is very easy to concentrate your fire on a single point without having to deal with any convergence. It also makes it easier to use the edges of building and other cover to engage the enemy, this is something the Altas can't do well.

I also don't really see the Heavy Metal as being a brawler as the Altas does brawling much better. Rather I like to use Heavy Metal as a long range mech. This to me is where it excells. It also means I don't have to use up tonnage to make the mech faster. For the most part I end up being perfectly content being at the back of the party. The enemy is already engaged with everyone else and between the 3 lg lasers and Guass I can lay down 43 points of damage per shot at 500+ meters not to mention use the LRMS, which with Artemis mostly zoom into the center torso, to soften up the enemy while I am laying on that 43 points of damage.

In any case, Heavy Metal is not only my favorite mech but my best performer as well. Love it and can't wait for the non-hero Highlanders to make their debut.

Sure it might be boring, but I generally prefer support builds.

Plenty of missiles to spread the pain, 3 LL for focused damage and sweeping lights legs, and an AC2 for the fear factor (you would be surprised how fast people will start backing up when their cockpit is shaking all over the place - they tend to miss that a salvo of LRMs is heading their way).

I dropped my LRM15 and a medium laser to gain an ER PPC, and I think this works much better for the build.

The Gauss and ER PPC both have 0 min range, they both have good long range (not identical but both would be sniping tools)

I can fire just the ER PPC when I am saving ammo, or both for extra 15 damage with only 1 extra heat.

Then I have 2 med lasers, 2 SSRM2s, and the machine gun for my close attacks, and since the gauss and ER PPC have no min range.... Ican throw them in there as well!

Considering dropping the machine gun for either a jump jet or another heat sink, though.

I find this build is highly effective.
You can take the LPL out for regular LL and add back the 5th JJ if you like

I use that build but with 2xSRM2's,Been having much success with it.

That's my build except with a 325 engine. I use jump jets enough that I like to keep the leg armor maxed as they get shot up.

I've found that 2 JJ is just about right for me. It lets you clear most buildings and cliffs, and lets you do the midair turn thing in a brawl, without having to give up too much tonnage. With more JJ do you climb faster or turn faster in midair? Or is it just more fuel = height and airtime?

I also prefer standard engines, although I haven't often lost a shoulder without dying. Also, 330XLs are expensive.

This gives me this result, which I've greatly enjoyed:

Any comments/suggestions?

I run 1 gauss 3 LL build, except I use only 4 JJ and a STD 285, fully armored. Works well for me but as always, experiment and find what works best for you.

I guess 2x SSRM is too small quantity for being enough. My current HEAVY METAL build is fastmech for close battle:

XL330
AC10
2x SRM6+ARTIV
3x Med Pulse Laser
5x JJets

HM is my favourite mech. I run it with 3LL, 2 AC5, 4JJ, XL330, AMS, Radar Dep and AC5 cooldown. I have the LLs chained on button 1, AC5s grouped on button 2, and the middle mouse button is the alpha.

Absolute monster. The JJs make all the difference for a 90t assault mech and that relative agility make it a great "get into an unexpected place and really spoil someones day" sort of mech.

With where I am at the moment with it, I could quite happily sell all my other mechs (except my other Highlanders, naturally ;) ) and just play that.

..a beast it is!

My HM is very similar but with 1JJ and 3xLPL ...brutal 1on1 with any class of mech

Nice... Will have to try that. I do like the agility of the 4JJs, but offsetting that with the glory of wub has to be worth a go :D
