Once. Just once before I leave this mortal world, I swear I will hit the cockpit of a Raven with a Long Tom shot.

Head shots have been a part of BT since the original tabletop days. The penalty was stiff for aiming for the head, but well worth it when you consider the surviving salvage.

I see no foul play in this, if you can do it, more power to you.

Is this still considered "bad form?" I know it was frowned upon in the past because it's basically trying to kill the pilot as apposed to the mech and was seen as a "cheap shot" for many.

The only people that thought it was Bad form are cry babies without the skill to do it themselves.. Just like Legging.. It is war.. Only 1 rule applies.. Survival of the fittest(which can also mean sneakiest or nastiest)

In war, there is no such thing as "cheap shots" :D

Exactly... It you find yourself in a fair fight it means you screwed up..

Personally I feel that the quicker you take down an enemy the more experience you should ge and killing with a cockpit shot you should get even more.

In TT, you could only aim for the head if the mech was shutdown. Most of the time you get lucky with hitting head on the location dice roll.
Best to try to hit head level area, then you might get lucky shot to head. Shoot the legs when you cannot get a view of the head or back. If you not a good shot, just aim at center mass.

I wouldn't list it as a top priority, some mechs do have some really hard to hit cockpits and unless you've got something like the 7X zoom module from scout you might never be able to get a decent hit on them. It's not like a normal FPS where the entire head is well... the head. That'd make things like the Atlas just stupid. It's a tactic but hardly an easy one. Really the easy weak spot to go for would to get behind someone and shred their rear armor.

dead on.

The cockpit is a very hard shot to make, provided the mech isn't standing still. As for legging... I dont start out aiming at your legs, but if I see you limping around then yeah, I'm gonna take your other leg.

If someone asks, "Why did you shoot the cockpit when it's dishonoable or you could have hit the back?" You say, "He looked at me funny."

I find as a Mid Range mech, beating the heavier mechs normally involve a head shot. Since everyone can use this tactic.. I hardly find it in bad taste.

Since when has shooting your enemy anywhere ever been considered bad form? I tend to aim for critical areas anways, so actually hitting the head would be a bonus.

KILL THE MEAT SALVAGE THE METAL!

if you stand still exposing your head to me so that its not even a challenge to hit your cockpit with my gauss rifle at max range (7x zoom mod so i can make sure i pin point dead center it) then you got what you deserved, keep moving, RUN SERPENTINE, make it a challenge and i might just break down and core you instead.

it does violate the rules of clan zell. but since clanners would rather **** themselves then use zell in battle (since 99% of them only play clans for the tech) that hardly matters.

Headshot is fair unless you have a mod to make it easier..... cheat!!!!!

I hope the devs take stats on the headshots to see if people are cheating, thats just no on.

I think this should be limited to - if an enemy has a setup which does not account for his cockpit, ie the position is easy to hit and he hasn't armoured it then yes it should be fairly easy to hit but for most of us making sure the cockpit is well placed and armoured then it should only be specialised mechs which can fairly reliably take them out. The downside probably is those mechs would lose quickly in a metal fight. Hopefully its all going to be a very complicated list of counters, hard counters etc which focuses on loadout and tactics.

Well if youre up for the challenge go for it... Both your mech and theirs are wobbling and there is a tiny target to hit. If you could make headshots reliably and down enemies quick, you would be hated by the enemy but your team would love you.

all the most popular clan mechs have huge head shot hit boxes, timber wolf most of the front face that isnt arms or shoulders his headshot. dire wolf is almost as bad as timber. vulture has that most of the top of its torso head windows. thor is kinda hard compared to the other clan mech, but still bigger then any IS mech head hit box we know is going to be in game yet.

If you're slow enough / leave cover for long enough for someone to aim and shoot off your head then its your fault for not keeping them from doing just that. Either keep moving, keep hidden or keep you enemies shaking from all the hits you land on them, otherwise you are doing something wrong and deserve all the headshots you get for it.

Lucky hits OTOH should be a natural occurance and generally just another reason not to give your enemies any opportunity to shoot at you in the first place.

Hey that could be a nice way to balance out Clans tech being better than IS. Really I think that's just the design philosophy of the IS vs the Clan. To the Clan pilots are valued, and their own reals generally tell you not to shoot there since if you kill someone that's a new warrior made from the tubes. IS don't care about shooting at the pilot so if you want to save a pilots life you make that cockpit harder to hit.

i have always seen the origal MW table top game as a game of thrones with mech. where you fought onely as long as you could then surenderd. but the later incarnation seem to be more of the FPS style, KILL 'EM ALL LET GOD SORT 'EM OUT. kinda game play. but if you have a "head shot" game play style it could discourage some of the less skilled gamers. but i am all for soft spot targeting on mecha.

Heh, Guess this answers the question in the OP:

"Again the twelve SRMs streak out and shatter metal and plastic, again twin azure beams focus on the head, and then the four emerald medium lasers add their hum and the Atlas’ cockpit explodes outward, the pilot dead. Falling backward gracelessly, the ’Mech hits the ground, smoking and hissing as the burned and scorched metal cools."
