Spider Build

I did try two rounds with the ER Large Laser. In my big mechs, I'm a surgeon with all the Large Lasers. I could still hit while moving fast, but it was very hard to keep the beam on full duration. So, I was rarely getting full damage. Plus, the longer duration made it more dangerous if I was running with friends (in fast mechs) that were running around. My read is the best way to employ the ER large laser is to stay at range. The farther the better.

Wow, 2 ERLL? Care to share the loadout? I couldn't manage two without a lot of sacrifices I didn't want to make.
Thats my loadout!

Ahhh! So a smaller engine and slower speed. Do you essentially just avoid contact with other lights like crazy, and hide and snipe?
I just got an XL250 in mine, purely for the extra space. The stock speed is plenty fast for me, I just wanted the room to mount up something with range. The ML's are gone, replaced with an ERLL, a bit of extra armor and another ton of JJ's, from what I had it at. To recap:
SDR-5D
Endo, Ferro, Standard HS
XL250 engine
ECM
TAG
ERLL
6 JJ
1t armor over stock (or maybe 1.5t, can't remember)
I can definitely sneak/flank with impunity, especially on the two big maps. If my team isn't on the ball enough to use my TAG spotting, I just start hitting exposed mechs with the ERLL. As soon as I see a light start coming my way, I bail and reposition. This SDR does NOT survive for very long against the killers that populate the light ranks...the uber built Ravens or the SSRM Commandos. So far, I can't really see an SDR build that will. So I am trying to find ways to play it completely differently.

I think his comment was along the lines of "3 Medium Lasers and ECM? Do you have any armor on that thing?"
So, person whose name I can't remember (sorry), here's my Spider 5D "Speedy".
My apologies if someone has already posed a loadout exactly like this. I haven't read this entire thread yet, and there are only so many ways you can outfit this chassis.
And in case Smurfy is on the fritz:
This has worked for me fairly well. Sure the XL means side-torso death is now in play, but Lights are glass cannons no matter what you do, & I felt the trade off for (slightly) more speed, armor, & equipment was worth it. I'm sure in hands more skilled than mine (or at least someone with a decent frame rate) this configuration can be very effective.

Sometimes i have to leave the cover and going into medium range and sometimes i get chased from other lights. This can´t be prevented. But the speed isn´t that important as everyone is thinking. I killed a lot of common build Raven 3L with 2 streak and 3 medlaser or Jenner with 6 medlaser or with streaks. The advantage of the second ERLL is that you dont need that much hits do kill another mech, so you can use cover! Besides this, i don´t want harassing the heavys or the assault mech, i want to kill them!
About the speed: Yesterday for example i got nearly 900 damage with a rvn 4x with 2 ER PPC with a 170 XL Engine and 79 kph topspeed.

This is the best build I've found. It has a nice niche over the 3L in that it can stay back and provide ECM support for the team while still dealing damage. 3 jets is plenty for maneuvering and the small lasers give it respectable punch at all ranges.

I don't know what are you doing with your Raven 4x, but you can fit 2xERPPC and max engine XL245 in it quite easily and it will have nearly the same heat efficiency (28 vs 31).
XL170 build:

As I suspected.
Just check how much better you can make the same build with XL 245. 1% difference in heat efficiency.
The only difference is BAP. I think 45% faster mech is so much better then having BAP.

For me, I already had the 250 XL left over from my 7M Trebuchet when I was done with it. I do plan to eventually get a 255 XL, but I figure if I'm going to spend that much money, I might as well get the Stalker it comes with. Your mileage may vary.

2 large lasers, ecm, dhs, endo, ferro, done. I leave off the JJs, since the predictability on landing tends to get more parts blown off than the flight time ever helps.
Most games, if they go longer than 3 minutes, will see the spider as 1st or 2nd in damage well above the other assault and heavy lancemates. You just bob and weave and constantly apply those large lasers to everything you can see. Some games, if you are the last man standing, can become very interesting:

This goes against everything inside me that screams 'MUST GO FAST' but if you drop down to 215 you can still run at 127 kph and lash out at 450m which is pretty damn good. Nice for adding dmg when you see targets and got the spare heat. Plus 18 per alpha is a damn good back attack. Do it once and scram or just scalpel mechs from a distance while they are distracted. I even got the ECM and a few JJ just for the sake of having the option and it runs decently cool.
