Does anyone else have that one 'mech that they bought that didn't live up to expectations? That one robot that no matter what you try, you can't seem to unlock its secrets?

You switch builds and change your piloting style, only to die in different, more humiliating ways. Then you get all the Elite efficiencies unlocked. "Now..." you say to yourself, "Now, things are going to be different." They're not. They're the exact same, but with less legs and more fire.

Spider 5K, what must I do to unlock your God-like potential?

What 'mech don't you get along with? Anything that you just can't seem to push over a 1.0KDR no matter how hard you try (I'm no KDR *****, but not being able to break 1.0 to me means it's not worth taking)?

STALKER.

If you boat it in the middle of a team, I guess it works. But the thing turns like a beached whale and is far and away the easiest mech ever made to flank. I have tired every conceivable combo, and I just hate this thing.

Love killing them, though.

CTF-4x is all about the dual Gauss builds. I run 2x Gauss and 2x MG in mine (with max armor) and consistently score 400-600 damage. That said, it is still inferior to the Catapult or Jagermech designs for dual Gauss sniping due to the lower hardpoint layout. (The guns are mid-torso, not shoulder-height - means more exposure if sniping over ridges.)

The CTF-2x is worthless though.

What?!? The 2X is like a pocket atlas with speed. My latest build incorporates an AC20 and 2xSRM4+A and it's pure winsauce.

But I guess that's my biggest gripe with the 4X: it's engine limitation. If I want 2xgauss on a phract I'll take my Illya any day. But then again, I don't.

The main reason the Cent D is awesome is you can oversize the engine far and away higher than the AL. It's a medium that can keep up with lights, and makes an excellent Light Hunter as a result.

If you were running the Cent D any slower than 120kp/h, you built it wrong. To be fair, that isn't immediately apparent since the game itself doesn't even have fluff explaining the variants strengths and weaknesses.

See I tried that. I tried it so hard. But it just felt like I was piloting a huge light mech. I had their speed but not their small frame and not really more weapons. Plus everyone shoots a D in the side Torso first while they shoot A and AL in the arms first.

Ultimately I was only able to get the D to work reliably by making it a slightly gimped A.

Actually I do quite nicely in my 5K. I've 2 loadouts: large pulse laser+4MGs and another is AC2+4 tons of ammo and a med laser.

I actually despise the 5V. This is one of the mechs I truly think is just crap no matter the build... because the only 2 builds possible (2 med or pulsers // 1 LL/ERLL/LPL) just suck compared to the capability of the other 2 spiders. I consider the 5K superior to the 5V. 12 jets are pointless if the thrust they give is so weak. 4 jets is enough to get you anywhere.

You must be insane. The stalker is perhaps one of the most potents mech there is. It will turn like a beached whale only if you use an engine smaller than 250...and you dont need to go that low. Even with a XL310 (max engine) you have enough tonnage and space to load whatever you wish.

2 PPCs 4LL, 1 TAG, 1 Flamer (lulz) 4 SRMs ... use PPCs in chain fire for long range fire & for switching off ECM... use the 4LLs for fighting under 500m (and use PPCs only when ur heat is low or you need the extra POW)... and the flamer is GOLD when stuff is in close range.. its visual disruption many times has saved my bacon as I watch lasers and SRM's fly wide from me.

I use a 4 LRM15+artemis, 2 LL, 4 med lasers, 2 AMS and 1 TAG combo with an XL300 and its excellent at any range.

Oh thank god I am not the only one who has his problems with the 4X.
God how much I hated it. The 1X is doing more than just fine for me.

Any stalker that is not the 3F (the one with the better torso twist) was killing me too.

Aaaand the DD Jäg. But I fortunately found a setup after 100 matches that finally worked.

I don't know what the problem is with the 7M though. Its a very good mech for me.
Try 1ERPPC, 2SRM6, 2ML & 1SSRM2 with full JJs and a 250XL engine. Takes a while until you can handle the different weapons but when you do...man...it destroys.

How can you not love the 5S.
Dual AMS plus Standing near someone with 1xAMS equals not having to think much about LRMs.

To be fair, if you're playing a Cent D, it's very much like like playing a light. You can get a good setup (or previously great, before the SRM nerf) with tripple SRMs running on one that's exceptional.

But if you have piloting lights, you definitely won't like a typical Cent D. The AL sure isn't a bad choice, though, it's one of the two best Cents.

Anything in the assault class basically. Way to large and cumbersome, with crappy torso twist and with the speed of a lazy glacier..

Well the Awesome is almost workable.... But good how much CBills i have wasted trying different assault mechs.

Only the A gets triple missile hard points. D is limited to two. The best runs I had with D was with an XL350 (125 kp/h) an AC5, 2 ML and 2 SSRM.

And that still felt like I had less firepower than most ravens or jenners, while not being really faster and not having much more armor. And being a much, much bigger target. That's the main thing with running the D as a light. You're just too big a target to do it.

Doh, ya got me. I don't know what I was thinking. I've run my share of Cent Ds, but mostly an unusual model (2x LRM15) before the major LRM nerfs. But you're right, the standard Cent D is twin SRM6, not tripple like the AL. I stand corrected.

I'd argue it's still very manageable and offers more survivability than a light, but we're definitely into gray area territory. It's definitely it's own animal, I can say that, and it's not for everyone. Definitely not an outright bad variant like the 4X or something, though.

Why can't I quit you swayback.

if you do not use double heat sinks it is much better with a xl265 fraro armor
but you must have it full of heatsinks but the temptaition to fire them ml all at once is hard

Funny you should say so, the CTF-2X is my favourite mech and the one I perform the best with.

AC20, 3 medium lasers, 2 streaks. Never (truly) fails me.

The CTF-4X however, I can't figure out.

Quite frankly don't have over 1.0 KDR period. My worst is the Cicada 2B though, only 0.33 KDR. Can't seem to get used to having the speed of a light, but no jump jets or ECM.

The Cicada 3C is close, but I've decided to keep my mechs now...

The Jager A
seriously, that mech gives me nightmares sometimes....
here's why:
You have Missile points on the Arms double lrms and the typical AC of your choosing
Effectively you are Long Range Glass Canon....No you say? I have SRMS?
good luck brawling because you only have rougly 250 armor A Hunchback is going to out brawl you AND Out run you.... All Srms You say? well THe Awesome can out run you has more armor and hardpoints and STILL Has room left for missiles, not to mention the Dragon can hit and run better.
ACK -40 is the build you result to macking the Jager A no less different from everybody else, While a viable Build everyone just BANZAI charges in it to get a 1:1 KDR not helping the team.

So you go back to Stock Lrms and a the double Auto canons of choosing. Again a nightmare because all they have to do is bum Rush you, and if you're relying on SRMS for close quarters you're dead anyway because other mediums and lights and heavies out maneuver you...
so....
WHY JAGER A?! WHY!? WHEN HBK-4J DOES IT BETTER?!
