Fare Thee Well MechWarrior

MechWarrior, cling thee not to this world,
As it holds for you no more.
But listen! Listen for the song from afar,
And heed the lilting call of the land that awaits.

Let the final breath slip from your pierced chest,
And your broken hands fall from the stick.
Bend your bloodied brow to this life,
And let tumble the shattered helm that once cradled your head.

Leave behind these acrid smokes of the fields,
These swirling battlegrounds of charred metal, bone and flesh.
Depart from the flashing fires that filled your eyes with destruction,
And abandon the burning hulk of steel and crimson that was your mount.

Hold not to this realm,
But hasten! Hasten down the twisting path to the mountains.
To the dark mountains and beyond,
And across the shimmering sea.

Voyage then. Voyage thee well MechWarrior.
Voyage thee well and long.
Cross the great divide,
And find the land that beckons with its Siren’s song.

Where swords and strife cannot follow,
Nor can cruel laser and cold gauss reach.
Where rolling hills of soft sun and velvet grasses embrace,
And quiet waters sooth your beleaguered soul.

Then, lay thee down MechWarrior,
Lay thee down and sleep.
Dream the dreams of victors…
Loose the silver cord…
And find your peace complete.

Fare thee well MechWarrior.
Fare thee well.

This is the final, official version of the poem "Fare Thee Well MechWarrior". It has been available since 2008.

Please feel free to use this poem as you wish for any non-commercial use.

*************************************************************************************************************

Some comments on the poem:

The dying MechWarrior fights to finish his mission. Reluctantly, he is guided down the path to the afterlife.

Also, implicit in the poem is the possibility the MechWarrior may NOT fare well. He may find a very different place than one of peace and rest. He could find a place of torment and agony. Indeed, it is for this very reason we wish him to "fare well". It expresses our hope that he does not fare poorly.

I too missed the "golden age" of BT/MW, only learning about MW3 when MW4 was about to come out, and my internet connection never really being strong enough to be a part of the online communities everyone talks about. Plus, I only had one friend IRL who played MechWarrior, and he wasn't into it enough to try the board game.

That being said, Neveron (a nearly-defunct MMO version of the board game, at its core) managed to allow me a taste of the community that makes BT great. I was on mIRC every night, and felt like I was really a part of what was going on, even though my "empire" had barely a battalion of Scorpion tanks. They were great guys, but once the site fell apart, I have no idea what happened to them.

That being said, I, like a number of people on here, do no personally know anyone who played BT/MW who has passed, but I fully support the notion of an in-game Hall of Remembrance, preferably set on neutral ground on Terra, for all to see and honor. For everyone who has lost friends, you have my deepest sympathies, and though I never knew them, I feel the world is lesser for their loss.

A lot of great and amazing people exist within the BT/MW universe. I've been playing for about 15 years now, but the vast majority of my interaction with the community began 9 years ago. Through the interactions with these people, I would be lying if I said that they didn't help to shape what I found in my future through what inspired me.

Not sure if this is the same person, but LadyViper passed away about then, maybe a little later. She is much missed.

She had spent some time with my Jade Falcons in SL, so we were distraught. A lot of folks from other units had memories in their matchmaking rooms on the Zone when they found out.

Some of my fellow Clansmen had me take a group screenshot of them in her favorite 'Mech, the Avatar. It was about all we could do.

I may not know anyone myself, none the less, respect to those warriors who have passed. Others have said it, but again, this is a good thread. One of the great things about MechWarrior, is the community.

RIP "Webclaw" Adrian Scott, died at 37 with lymphoblastic leukemia 2005 when I was 11. Only knew him for a little bit, perhaps three years, quite sad when you consider he was my uncle. Lately I've come across his old games Mechwarrior 2 and the such and playing them has allowed me to reconnect with him and now I go by the same username and nickname that he used to preserve his legacy and get to know him better in a way. Still missing you Adrian.

Bbear was an MPBT player who may or may not have played with you. He was one of the SR COs, 17th I believe or maybe the 22nd. He was in the MPBT community before Kali. He played with me for a while in MW4 before I took over HK in W!O. One of us his daughters played MPBT I think but was not very serious about it. I handled our transactions for his funeral for House Steiner through her.

BBear was one of my COs with the Skye Rangers in MPBT Solaris. I don't really remember him much, but RIP. Also surprised to hear Doug Chaffee passed - he's one of my favorite artists of all time, from any genre.

Heres to Brian Bisson aka Neuromancer, admin of the venerable Mechwarrior Leagues and friend to everyone whether they knew it or not. Not many carried the MW torch like he did. Rest in peace, Brian.

Also, heres to Thunder in her pink Thor. When she passed unexpectedly many of her clan mate friends drove from far away to attend the services.

And here a special thank you to all you Mechwarriors who are serving in our armed forces putting your life on the line for us.
