I don't like exploitative cash ins, nor do I like a community pretending to care about a cancer victim so that they can get more in game content. If they wanted to give to a charity they could have already done it, not hostaged a company by promising to pay them money in exchange for sending a little bit of it to a charity. This whole thing is corrupt, the very first post about it encouraged giving to the cancer society, and if PGI cared they could have had a link to the society up on the front page 20 minutes after the community was informed of the tragedy. I doubt many of you donated to that, if any.
It's going to be even worse next time this happens and Timmy doesn't get the mech Sarah got because PGI already "did that".

Yes, they say that, but are we ever actually going to see any proof of the money going to a charity? Or even if money goes to a charity, is it going to be all of it?
I mean, didn't a good deal of Founders' money go into different projects, including MW:T?
Can one honestly trust a for-profit company to handle this kind of a thing altruistically? What if they pull a 'it was our stance at the time' like with a lot of other things (although I admit, that would generate a lot more flak than disregarding gameplay promises)?
There wouldn't be this amount of cynicism and paranoia if PGI upped their transparency.
Unless the devs can provide actual, concrete proof that all of the money earned by purchasing the Sarah 'mech is going to a charity, people will keep doubting them, and with a good reason. A simple twitter post/ATD reply of 'yeah sure of course' won't do the trick.

Get over yourself.
I was a bit nicer to the last guy who assumed they knew what my (or anyone elses) motives are, [Redacted]
PGI could have done nothing. They're under no obligation to do anything for this girl or her family or their cause. Instead, they are going to devote time and effort into making something to remember one of their fans by and then on top of that donate all the proceeds to cancer. For doing that they deserve the good publicity and sales that they will inevitably get out of it. [Redacted]
I practically never resort to name calling or whatever on forums. It's childish and unattractive. [Redacted]

[Redacted] who just wants some nice in game content because donating to an actual charity is too hard. Yeah, PGI is under no obligation to do anything, which is precisely why they're taking your money to sell you a product instead of having you donate to an actual cancer charity.
You don't care about this, if you did you would have donated day 1. You didn't. You just want your powermech, cancer, cancer research, and cancer victims doesn't even register. You want another bobblehead, they want to sell you another bobblehead. That's what they're doing. Theyre going to come out with a mech MONTHS after sarah died, after people have forgotten, and theyre going to publish it EVERYWHERE for free publicity.
Just because you didn't want to give to an actual charity.

You have literally zero knowledge of my charity situation or what I care about. As it so happens I donate personal time and money every year to a local competition from which all profits are donated to Kids With Cancer. Last year we raised over $10,000. And that's only one of charities I regularly support with both time and personal money. So stop talking out your rear end about things that you have literally less than no knowledge of.
Put your money where your big mouth is and post us up a few receipts of the last major donations you made to a charity.
Also, I own no Hero Mechs and couldn't care less about about vanity items and the only 'nice in game content' I have purchased is Premium Time and a few Mech bays. I will buy this one though because it's a great cause and worthy of spending full price on. Actually, I hope they make it twice as expensive as a normal Hero Mech and I'll buy two, just to spite you.

You give a lot? Cool. That's a great habit and I commend you for it.
You should be mad at this too. They're monetizing someones death. They could have done more already (they didn't even talk about it), they could have fast tracked the release of the mech (they didn't), they could have put something on the front page of the site or even in the launcher detailing how we should give to a charity. They didn't.
You know what they did? They made a product that they can advertise. A game that can't even get the media to sniffle at them is going to release a "charity mech" late and sell it to people. It's a tax writeoff, it's free press, and it helps less than if they had just put a little donate button on their front page. You know when the NFL gives 1 million to charity and spends 50 million advertising it? It's come home.
People should give to charities, cancer charities like the one that was in the very first post about Sarah are good things and people should give to them. What a charity should not be is a chance to advertise and make money. And that's what you people are asking for, whether you know it or not. Who can blame the devs for accepting their good fortune that this happened and doing the profitable thing instead of the right one.
Me. And If I have to do it alone, so be it. I'm tired of media corporations taking advantage of this kind of thing, I've seen enough of it in my life.
If people want to do the right thing and actually give to a charity instead of WAITING so that they can buy a mech with no price, detailing, or release date here's a link.

OMG a business is doing business!? What is the world coming to!? Next thing you know people will be expecting me to pay for food and a place to live! What a crazy notion!
The point is, they didn't have to do anything. They're not monetizing anyone's death, they're creating a memorial for a fan which again, I stress, they don't have to do. Cancer research gets no money from PGI currently. Why should it? What relevance does a game about giant stomping robots blowing each other up have to Cancer Research? They are a business. They're in existence to create a product and sell it to consumers for a profit, not to spend any of their time worrying about a charity. The fact that they're even considering doing it is testament to how cool the developers actually are.
Why should they have 'done more already'? They're a business, not a non-for-profit charity organisation! Why should they 'fast track' the mech? What does that achieve aside from wiping aside half their current game projects which are actually making them money - the actual reason they're able to create a charity mech and donate all the proceeds from it in the first place? Okay, they could have put something on the front page or in the launcher, I give you that, however Bryan did include a donation link in his original post about this and again I stress that they didn't even have to acknowledge that this was in any way related to MechWarrior: Online.
Your cynicism is so overriding that I am surprised you're even able to log onto the internet and post this without fearing Big Brother gleaning your bank account number from the number of keystrokes used. The government is surely watching y'know?

Now before you or others go all cynical over my answer let me tell you why I belive so.
My mother went away in cancer 1989 and I still miss her, over the years I have donated then and again to cancer research, but that being said I dont mind pay for Sarah´s mech in this game, why because it all is about Sarah´s love of the game, it is something I belive Sarah would have been extremly happy and proud of to get her own mech in the game. I think her family also would get proud of this, of something they could embrace and find comfort in, this you can not achive by donating to cancer research. If Sarah can see us and take comfort of the creation of Sarah´s mech I for one know I would be happy for that small comfort it could bring to Sarah and her family.
Remembrance
And never forget that help may come
From the most unlikely of quarters
And success rest upon the shoulders
Of those kept shadowed until the time of need.
-- The Remembrance (Clan Wolf), Passage 222, Verse 6, Lines 11-14
I salute you Mechwarrior Sarah! May you live long and prosper where ever you are and that you find joy, happiness and love. And if you find my mother among the stars give her my eternal love from her son!

I'll stop, that was very eloquent, and I can't make blanket assumptions about people like that. My issues are with PGI more than the community here, I think people are being overzealous and not thinking through quite what and why they want, but I can't judge them for that. This is getting heated and I'm sorry for the negativity.

I'll stop too. I apologize for the personal comments I made.
I think some people over think these sort of things and the cynicism they associate with big corporate entities who genuinely are profit-mongers (and do monetize tragedy all the time) make them feel like anything similar like this, must be a cash-grab too.

Having been inside of and seen them do this exact thing I think you and a lot of people have an inappropriately low amount of cynicism. It's an old moniker but "charity is a business" is far from untrue. I just wanted people to give genuinely and directly to a charity, rather than ask to be manipulated for free press. I can't truly know PGIs intentions, but I know that charity "sales" are typically treated by the decision making bodies involved as a tax break or investment in image. At least in my experience any benefit they give to the charity involved is tangential and minimized as much as possible. That's the simple reality of modern business, philanthropy is a profit generator. I hope PGI does their best to make the process as transparent as possible, but if they truly wanted what was best there would have been a donation button in the launcher while the wounds were fresh and people were feeling most charitable.
You stressed that PGI didn't have to do this in a previous post, and I agree. If they don't have to do this and they aren't doing it in a timely and appropriate way maybe you should ask yourself why they are doing this at all. They are making a man hour investment, much more of one than a dev diary, a few banners, and a spot in their front page slider would have been. If they have good intentions I laud them and criticize only their methods, either way in my opinion they are going about this very wrong and for a plethora of reasons.
