Either you support cancer charity, or you don't. A slacktivist way of buying an in game item that relates to it is a high profile, but lazy way to show your (not you personally) support and frankly stinks to high heaven imo.

Ever heard of the Pink Ribbon? I guess anyone sporting one of those is a "slacktivist" as well? Does awareness ribbons in general "stink to high heaven" as well?

I understand the negativity toward the Sarah mech. I do. But if the proceeds truly do go 100% to cancer research, and it convinces a handful of people that can't be bothered to go and donate on their own to fork out some cash for an in-game avatar, then why isn't it worth it?
Yes, it's a PR touch. Sure. I get that. But I don't blame PGI for going this route, especially since there's a community demand. And if money gets shoved toward the fight against cancer (which is a fate I wish on no person. Ever), what's the downside?

Because it's the way they are going about it. For instance, Blizzard when I was playing released two pets that went 100% to charity, one for make-a-wish and the other for the tsunami relief.

But they didn't go around calling it the <insert name of kid in make-a-wish> panda or <child who died of radiation poisoning from the tsunami> lil KT.

Like I said earlier, a cockpit banner that says "Mechwarriors against Cancer", fine, whatever. Making all proceeds for Firebrand go to the cancer charity for a month? Even better!

Making a specific hero (maybe) mech after a specific kid who died of cancer that will then be blown up repeatedly is where I draw the line.

Who said that it won't be a special mech where the proceeds go to charity? How about wait for details before you make blind and ignorant complaints about something. Every company ever that has donated to charity also does it for the "freebie positive PR".

I never thought, even in forum with all it's immature children, did I think that you guys would cry and complain and try to pull out all this negativity from making a special mech dedicated to a little girl that passed away who loved this game and her Jenner.

The point is, if people genuinely WANT to donate money to charity because of the way that this story moved them, why can't they just do that anyway? Why do the people who for whatever reason don't want to be reminded of this tragedy, or would rather opt out of "actively" (I use the term loosely) supporting it have to be forced into seeing it?

As I've already said, this is slacktivism. It's a way for people to pat themselves on the back and feel all warm and fuzzy about how great the community is. Honestly, try and make it more than that if you want, but I'll call BS.

As soon as MWO changed from closed to open beta the tide of trolls and immature rage posters flooded in. At least now you know which people are not worth having an intelligent conversation with. Im not suprised at all that some people heartlessly rail against even the most sacred of things.

@Bryan

Sounds great. I can't wait to see it all in game. Take your time. Better to be later and good than soon and crappy.

An explanation to that effect would have been nice rather than the old "bait-and-switch" act that they pulled. Do they have to explain ALL of their reasoning? No. But a reason would be appreciated nonetheless.

Fair enough. Don't mistake this for white knighting, but this could have been some decision that was done last minute and from a different portion of the management. Or it might have been something that could be perceived to make them look bad? Like if they went "woops we just figured out yesterday that center torso hits don't register but about 60% on Orion" after it was something that was supposedly finished? I work in development and things like this happen more often than you think of things get through QA and look fine but then a few weeks down the road something happens and it needs to be revisited.

I personally would have liked an explanation as well, but they're under no authority to give us one. Either way there's a new mech to start looking at, and C-bills to start grinding. I'd rather just focus on those two.

I'd say RIP dragon, buy with big side torsos no xl. So design will matter a lot. Still, this may render the dragon obsolete.

Kind of like a 55 tn mech with good hitboxes would potentially make all other 50 ton and 45 ton mediums useless... which is why I'm torn on 55 tonners. I want btter mediums to fight heavies, but I have 7 elited (3 mastered) mediums I like :-).

Was really really looking forward to the orion. Finally a heavy main battlemech! (I expect orion to obsolete non jumping cataphracts, which I don't like right now anyways, thus the hypocracy).

All this aside, I prefer more information to less, so I'm not asking (please don't) for them to not tell us. And this is a Three week warning. So it's fine. Orion was planned, last minute change pushed it back, it happens. Now I can buy those modules I put on hold fr the orion.

Also: weight limits in 8 man would make me happy! And make this quickdraw have a point :-). Also, cange the weight limit every 2-4 weeks to shake up the meta, that would be awesome. (Unlike 4 man, weight maxes don't affect queue times, because all 8 man's would meet the criteria). But obviously this neds a better launch lobby first (UI 2.0).

Orion probably won't make the Cataphract obsolete mainly due to the Ilya, 3D, and 4X can mount multiple ballistics or has jump jets. The 1X and 2X maybe.

Also, will a 55 tonner make the 40-50 ton mechs obsolete? It depends. The Dervish for example is a missile heavy platform. The later version have a few extra lasers but mechs with more energy points like the HBK-4P or the CDA-2A won't be affected because they can boat mediums. Also the Centurion can mount ballistics which the Dervish can't. The others being the Hoplite, Griffin, Kintaro don't either though I would see the Griffin being popular.

Yes? If you truely cared about a charity you would donate without requiring a "reward" to go with it.

Please tell me that the jump jet shake will actually shake aim and not just the cockpit model like what getting with ballistics used to do. You can easily train yourself to completely ignore it.

We don't know what the mech will be called. It might be the JR7-CNCRSUX variant or has a custom paint-job with "Cancer Sucks" down the side for all we know. It might have absolutely no connection to Sarah (and for legal reasons, probably shouldn't). They've released very little information except "we're doing something". Which in my worthless opinion, is better than nothing.

Oh for the love of Pete!

You touchy-feely types getting your undies twisted over the potential symbolism inherent in actually shooting said mech is so flipping sensationalist I dunno whether to laugh or cry...

Talk about looking a gift-horse in the mouth. :)

Any gesture for Sarah would be appreciated... Giving us "special" mech in honor of her, donating the profits is a GRAND GESTURE... and is not the equivalent of spitting on her grave.

Apparently If I accept a raffle winning at a charity event I should feel guilt for using it. :(

Whether they give a banner or a Jenner mech named Sarah the outcome is the same...the money goes to charity. THAT is the point. This mech is about a father and daughter that play and loved this game. The mech is also there to "immortalize" her memory in a way by giving her her own special one of a kind Jenner which was her favorite. Don't think about it as running around and just blowing it up. If you use it think about that little girl and the mech she loved.

Pretty much, yes. Give to charity because you want to, not because you want a little badge to show the world how great you are.

For those who don't understand : the Quickdraw means we are going to have another round of IS Mechs thus we are going to have another assault so 2 more assaults with the Victor.

Sure, it's on the near top of my "Looking Forward To:" list... right under armageddon and nuclear winter.

This. So much this.

So, if the whole "Quickdraw = mech of the month" business is not a mistake (which it very well could be), what the hell PGI? What happened between you and the Orion? I was really looking forward to the Orion!

I seriously think third person view is not needed for the game, it takes away much of the immersion for the player. it was fine in mechwarrior 4 because we are playing as an already established character(s).

A better alternative is to create a replay function to spectate past games and able to free move a camera around the map to:
  • study tactics
  • record footage from multiple and dynamic angles
  • see what others saw
  • examine for possible hacking software

There. Go donate in her name. You can probably even fill it in there in the "donator name" box.
