I agree with you here, but I think the point was for PGI to donate the time for a design, code, etc. and that we would have an incentive to purchase said mech. You make a good point, we SHOULD be donating to worthy causes, but not everyone does. This is just a way to get people who otherwise might have less time, interest and attention to donate. It's kinda like a charitable auction, or a bake sale... but with 'mechs.
Personally, right or wrong, I'm of the opinion that cancer research needs all the help it can get, even if it's not from simple heartfelt donations straight to the cause. Even if that means I'm shooting a mech dedicated to a little girl's memory.
